INTRODUCING DE BEERS AFC The De Beers Mining Co. was granted a permit to manufacture dynamite at a Somerset West site in 1900. Later, the De Beers Associated Football Club was started at a site near the factory. “The Dynamiters” as they became known throughout the country constituted that year, with the constitution’s clause 2 stating, “The club colours shall consist of a royal blue jersey, white shorts, royal blue stockings, with turnover containing 2 white stripes.” This still stands today, 111 years later. The club is thriving with over 450 players moving through the ranks, in age groups ranging from under 5 to over 45, including a ladies team, with 30 teams in total representing the club. This is a club with deep heritage – it is the oldest club in the Western Cape, and by comparison, it is 2 years older than England’s Chelsea Football and the same age as Spain’s Real Madrid. The football club was previously located at De Beers Avenue in Somerset West for over a century, and in October 2009 moved to a new multi million rand venue. This new venue incorporates a double-story club house, bar facilities and a coffee shop as well as 4 floodlit FIFA regulation football pitches. The new facilities are world class. To operate successfully and continue to achieve our objectives, De Beers needs sponsors. Please visit our web site at www.debeersafc.co.za for more about the facilities and club activities.

THE MARKETING OPPORTUNITY As the oldest amateur football club in South Africa, De Beers AFC is built on a strong tradition of multi-racial sport. While there are many sports clubs that are predominantly race specific in the Western Cape, De Beers AFC has always fielded teams including members of all ethnic groups – and we are proud of that fact. Currently individuals from previously disadvantaged communities make up 30% of our juniors and 40% of our seniors. With training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and matches on Saturdays, a membership of over 450 players, plus coaches, parents and the visiting teams with their supporters, means that De Beers AFC club is a hive of activity all week long, allowing ongoing exposure of the sponsor’s brand. The season runs from March to September each year. De Beers AFC plays in the CTTFA LFA, competing with the likes of Ajax, Vasco da Gama and Old Mutual, to mention only a few of the academies that we compete against. Our teams play away games at grounds throughout the Western Cape, including Camps Bay, Meadowridge, Bellville, Durbanville, Parow, Wynberg etc. This is great exposure for the club and for our sponsors, as your brand will be seen by members of communities from all over the Western Cape, across a fairly wide range of LSM’s.

1. De Beers AFC Website and Social Media Presence

Communication with our members and visiting teams is primarily done via updates on our web site. Members are reminded to visit the web site to be kept up to date with activities at De Beers AFC. We also use Facebook and twitter to communicate with members. These are great vehicles to market your business and products to our members.

2. Our relationship with the DistrictMail

Our relationship with the District Mail is a long and rewarding one. It affords us the opportunity to publish match reports and supply action photos on the sports page of the District Mail, We have on many occasions made the back page of the newspaper (i.e.: the main page of the sports section). The DistrictMail is an award winning community newspaper, with a readership in exec of 55,000 people, serving the communities of Macassar, Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay for over 80 years. They are a weekly newspaper. Appearing every Thursday, they are the heartbeat of the Helderberg and have been a source of local news since 1928. De Beers AFC’s presence in the newspaper represents is a great opportunity for sponsors to promote their brand alongside that of De Beers AFC.

3. Our Previously Disadvantaged Individual (PDI) Program You will be afforded the opportunity to participate in the PDI program. Selected previously disadvantaged players are sponsored by De Beers AFC by having their annual subscription fees paid by the club. Photo opportunities and an association with such a sound community investment program are available for sponsors. As sponsor, you will also be afforded the opportunity to participate in the PDI transport program. A huge problem faced by these children is that players from as young as 9 years old walk from local townships to the club on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, often as far as 10 km’s and as late as 7pm in the evenings. Sponsorship is required to ensure the safe transport for these players. Branding and marketing opportunities in respect of this worthy cause will be developed with the sponsor, to ensure exposure is maximized.

CONCLUSION De Beers AFC is not only the oldest but one of the most successful amateur football clubs in the Western Cape, on and off the field. We are involved in football at grass roots level and have had success with many junior players moving on to play for academy clubs. Almost all our coaches and managers are unpaid volunteers and donate large amounts of time and often private funding to ensure the success of De Beers AFC. We manage the club with a strong management committee and tight financial governance. We receive no funding from any football governing bodies, municipality or government. To successfully operate a club of this size with its large facilities as well as maintain and further strengthen our vital investment in the upliftment of the previously disadvantaged local communities, we need sponsors, as player subscriptions and catering profits do not cover operating costs. My proposal to you is to review the different sponsorship opportunities on offer to see which option best suits your company’s needs. We do receive donations from sponsors that do not want to receive any advertising or mention of their donation. For these donations, we supply the donor with a detailed account of how their donation has been spent. For further information please contact me, Junaid Roopnarain on 084 716 7814 or on email at [email protected] as we would welcome the opportunity to accommodate you.

De Beers AFC is a non-profit organization and does not pay its players or coaches. We have a situation at 1st team level that players require financial assistance to travel to and from the club as well as support their families. The “adopt a player program” is directed at the player, no funds go to the club. The idea is for the business to employ a player for the duration of the season. For an 8

month period, by paying the player a salary of R 1,500.00 per month for as long as the player plays at 1st team level. The business should be able to deduct the full cost from tax, as a sort term contracted employee/ marketing cost. This has a huge impact on the performance of the 1st team and enables the club to attract player of a very high standard, as well as enabling aspiring players the opportunity to commit with the intention of possibly qualifying as an “adopt a player” program member.
