Welcome to DCAD!

The Continuing Education Program at the Delaware College of Art and Design invites you to join a community of aspiring and professional artists and designers who are committed to creativity and exploration. Classes and workshops are open to the community – everyone is welcome! Most classes are conducted in the evenings and on the weekends and are non-degree, part-time courses of study. Classes and workshops range from one to 12 class meetings.

Fall semester begins Monday, September 8. Winter semester begins Monday, January 5.

The Continuing Education Program at DCAD is dedicated to providing the community with dynamic courses that foster personal and professional growth. DCAD delivers challenging and inspiring courses in downtown Wilmington. These small classes – conducted by an engaging faculty of working artists and design professionals – focus on your individual success.

In addition to a wide selection of classes, DCAD’s Continuing Education Program also offers Certificate Programs. These provide students with the opportunity to accelerate their careers and artistic abilities through focused, compact courses that develop creative and technical skills while progressing through the prescribed curricula in Web and Graphic Design, Art and Design, Interior Design or Photography.

No application is required for Continuing Education classes – just register! You may register in person, via phone, mail or online at www.dcad.edu under ‘Register Now.’ Due to limited class size, please register one week prior to the start-date of your preferred courses. HERB SPARKSBFA in Sculpture and Illustration, University of Delaware. Herb Sparks currently consults as an interactive designer and developer to many regional companies. He has been doing interactive web work for more than 10 years and has been teaching at DCAD for more than five years.

BRAD WASONBrad began in design working for Time Distribution Services: an AOL Time Warner Company, at age 17. Since his first gig in design he has worked extensively with Fortune 500's, start-ups, local businesses and a passionate community of non-profits. In 2010, Brad founded 23rd & 5th, a boutique branding agency based in Wilmington, DE. As the Founder and Creative Director, Brad then sold the firm to DMG Marketing, a niche direct-mail agency that specializes in Financial Marketing, in the summer of 2012. He currently works at DMG Marketing as their Creative Director. In addition to his career in advertising, Brad has over nine years of teaching experience, working as an adjunct instructor for the following institutions: University of Delaware, Delaware College of Art and Design, and, most recently, The coIN Loft in Wilmington.

ROB WHITEHEADWeb Designer, Web Publisher at Bank of America. Rob has extensive experience in photography, pre-press and imaging technology. Rob owned and operated the Colourworks Photo Lab.

Learn the palettes and inspectors used to construct web documents. Beginning with text formatting and tables, the class will cover the use of frames and the construction of image maps. Because it’s an Adobe product, InDesign is designed to work with Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. In this course you will gain basic experience with the software as you work with page layout creation, creating and formatting text, inputting and manipulating images, and gain a basic understanding of color as it relates to printing. Exercises are designed to take full advantage of the basic tools within InDesign. Macintosh knowledge required.

ADOBE INDESIGN II COURSE ID: GD0060 Instructor: David ManzolilloSIX SESSIONS Tuesday, Oct. 21 – Dec. 2; 6 PM – 9:15 PMNON–CREDIT Tuition: $300 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUsExpand your knowledge of this powerful layout and production tool. Students will learn to create complex multi-page documents utilizing master pages and advanced paragraph and character styles (including the new nested styles feature). The use of tables within InDesign will be explored to automate design tasks. InDesign’s robust PDF export capabilities, along with its helpful preflight and document packaging functions, will also be explored. Prerequisite: Adobe InDesign I.

ADOBE MUSE T COURSE ID: GD0080 Instructor: Rob Whitehead SIX SESSIONS Monday, Jan. 5 – Feb. 9; 6 PM – 9:15 PMNON–CREDIT Tuition: $300 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUsAdobe® Muse™ is part of the Creative Cloud™ software that allows you to create a compelling website without writing any code. Similar to Adobe InDesign (with master pages and layers), the site is developed visually, so users do not need to be concerned about the underlying code. The course will begin with an overview of Muse and then students will quickly begin building a complete website with functional navigation, a Google map, a contact form, an image gallery, and employ some of the new web fonts available from the Adobe Edge Web Fonts. The class is very hands-on and no knowledge of web coding is required. The class is geared for beginner and intermediate levels of design.

ADOBE CREATIVE SUITE T WEEKEND WORKSHOPS Instructor: David Manzolillo NON–CREDIT Tuition: $100 each Sharpen your skills or brush up on new features with three weekend workshops that will explore the basics, introduce image manipulation, color correction, vector illustration, page layout and pre-press production. These three workshops provide an overview of Adobe Creative Suite 5 and will be taught through discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. A half-hour lunch break will be provided; students may bring their lunch or visit a local eatery.

ADOBE WEEKEND WORKSHOP – PHOTOSHOP COURSE ID: GD0064 Saturday, Jan. 10; 10 AM – 4 PM Learn the basics of Photoshop, image manipulation, basic color correction, and tips and tricks to enhance your work flow.

ADOBE WEEKEND WORKSHOP – ILLUSTRATOR COURSE ID: GD0070 Saturday, Jan. 17; 10 AM – 4 PM Explore the basics of Illustrator, and the advantages of vector illustration, Live Trace and Live Paint.

ADOBE WEEKEND WORKSHOP – INDESIGN COURSE ID: GD0071 Saturday, Jan. 24; 10 AM – 4 PM Complete your workshop experience with learning the basics of page layout, importing Photoshop & Illustrator files, and utilizing the built in pre-press production tools.

BASIC LAYOUT & TYPOGRAPHY FOR WEB AND PRINT COURSE ID: GD0076 Instructor: Joy Smoker TWELVE SESSIONS Thursday, Sept. 11 – Dec. 4; 6 PM – 9:15 PMNON–CREDIT Tuition: $490 / Lab Fee: $35; 4 CEUs Learn to communicate effectively using principles of design and typography. Issues of space, texture, color, rhythm and meaning are addressed. Type and visual elements are combined to create effective layouts. Computer typography is introduced. Prerequisites: Quark I or InDesign I; Mac OS competency.

DIGITAL PAINTING WITH PHOTOSHOP COURSE ID: GD0082 Instructor: Rob Whitehead ONE SESSIONS Saturday, Oct. 4; 1 PM – 5 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $65 Painting with Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud will begin with a photo of your choosing that you wish to convert to a digital painting. From there you will learn about proper brush selection, color selection & mixing, which details to keep and which to lose in your finished piece; creating a pleasing rendition of your original photograph. Because this workshop is focused on teaching techniques for digital painting in Photoshop, it is highly recommended that you are already familiar with Photoshop before getting started. This workshop will focus on a using a landscape image for the class tutorial as opposed to a portrait photo. If you do not have an original landscape image, one will be provided by the instructor.

LOGO DESIGN WITH VECTOR GRAPHICS: BEGINNING ILLUSTRATOR COURSE ID: GD0041 Instructor: Jason Olney SIX SESSIONS Monday, Sept. 8 – Oct. 13; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $300 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUs One of the backbones of modern graphic design and electronic publishing, Illustrator is the leading vector-based illustration software available. This course instructs the beginning student in the software’s typical uses in today’s design and publishing environment – covering basic drawing, tracing and typographic techniques. Mac OS competency required.

Students explore this program’s powerful painting, color-correction and retouching tools and investigate the relationship between image capture, resolution and output quality. IMAGE RETOUCHING & RESTORATION: INTERMEDIATE PHOTOSHOP COURSE ID: GD0058 Instructor: Jason Olney SIX SESSIONS Saturday, Oct. 25 – Dec. 6; 10 AM – 1 PMNON–CREDIT Tuition: $300 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUs Build on your basic understanding of Adobe Photoshop. INTRODUCTION TO GRAPHIC DESIGN FOR WEB AND PRINT COURSE ID: GD0077 Instructor: Joy Smoker TWELVE SESSIONS Tuesday, Sept. 9 – Dec. 2; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $490 / Lab Fee: $35; 4 CEUs This introduction to current computer graphics technology includes an overview of page-layout, vector-based illustration and pixel-based digital imaging software. Publishing techniques, rough composition skills, concept development and fundamentals of typography are introduced as students learn how such technology is used in real world applications. SELF-PROMOTION WORKSHOP FOR GRAPHIC DESIGNERS COURSE ID: GD0084 Instructor: Brad Wason ONE SESSIONS Saturday, Oct. 25; 10 AM – 4 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $100 This one-day workshop focuses on self-promotion for graphic designers that will get you noticed. Challenge yourself with some new ideas to re-invigorate your business cards, books, posters, announcements and more. Whatever your approach (or budget) – graphic designers will learn to explore their creativity in pursuit of self-promotion – whether hand-crafted or extravagantly produced. WEB ANIMATION: FLASH & HTML I COURSE ID: AN0013 Instructor: Charley Parker SIX SESSIONS Wednesday, Sept. 10 – Oct. 15; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $300 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUs Learn the basics of motion graphics and animation for websites and banner ads, using Adobe Edge Animate to create HTML5 website animations and Adobe Flash to create animated banner ads. Students will learn to prepare and import graphics and create an HTML5 animated motion graphics presentation, as might be used for the introduction for a website. Students will also create a Flash animated banner ad, with attention to typical requirements for commercial banner ad placement. The course includes an overview of HTML5 animation options for publishing to various platforms, including the iPad and other mobile devices, and the changing role of Flash (still the required platform for most animated banner ads and also a surprisingly effective tool for making animated GIFs.)

WEB ANIMATION: FLASH & HTML II COURSE ID: AN0014 Instructor: Charley Parker SIX SESSIONS Wednesday, Oct. 22 – Dec. 3; 6 PM – 9:15 PMNON–CREDIT Tuition: $300 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUs Learn more sophisticated web animation techniques, with attention to issues of timing, easing, encapsulating motion (“symbols”) and the use of simple scripting to control timeline functions. Students will learn, both in HTML5 animations and Flash, how to provide interactivity for linking to other pages and websites and for responding to user input within an animation. There will also be an overview of the use of HTML5 animation tools to prepare static webpages, and the incorporation of existing HTML elements into HTML5 animations. The course includes discussion of the current state of HTML5 and Flash animation, and potential future trends, including the increasing importance of mobile devices and electronic publishing (“eBooks”).

WEB DESIGN FUNDAMENTALS COURSE ID: WD0040 Instructor: Warren Chase TWELVE SESSIONS Thursday, Sept. 11 – Dec. 4; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $490 / Lab Fee: $35 The first course in the Web Design Certificate program is open to Certificate and non-Certificate students and explores the major components of website development, including HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Graphic creation. Students will learn how to format text and control page layout; create compressed graphics and manipulate color schemes; understand hyperlinks and build comprehensive web navigation; develop online forms; understand website directory structure; and apply basic guidelines for search engine optimization. Students will employ their new knowledge to construct a functional website for a final project. Prerequisite: Photoshop I.

Web Designers focus on the art of creating aesthetically pleasing websites with effective usability. This compact course of study enables students to design the look and feel of an original website or upgrade an existing site, as well as implement the website by embedding images and objects in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) and define the layout in CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). RAYMOND BROWNRaymond has had a lifelong involvement in visual art including: teaching, drawing, painting, printmaking, portraiture, storyboarding for animation and live-action production, logo design, and computer graphics imaging. Teaching experience includes instruction of drawing and painting at the Arts Council of Princeton and storyboarding at the Otis College of Art and Design.

DONNA CUSANOBFA, Tyler School of Art, Temple University, with a concentration on illustration, graphic design and painting. Donna studied for one semester in Rome, concentrating on Renaissance art history and painting. A pastel and oil painter, Donna been teaching for more than 12 years at regional venues such as the Wallingford Community Arts Center, the Howard Pyle Studio Group and extensively at her private studio in Aston, PA. She is published in The Best of Pastel Books I and II, Chester County Living Magazine, and Art Matters Magazine. She is currently working on a continuing series of abstracted landscape paintings based on a trip to Donegal, Ireland. www.donnacusano.com.

These garments have a performance aspect as they immobilize the female figure, yet the hammered steel framework offers a seductive quality, as it stands alone without a figure inside.

HAROLD KALMUSBFA, Sculpture, Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts). Harold has taught at Drexel University, the University of the Arts and the Art Institute of Philadelphia, including courses in sculpture, 3D digital illustration and animation. His sculpture work focuses on the figure and has been shown in various exhibits in the region.

AMANDA KAMENMFA, University of Delaware; BFA, The College of New Jersey. Amanda has taught at Washington College and Delaware Art Museum. Recent exhibitions include The Viewing Program at The Drawing Center, NYC; Drawing on Experience, Woman Made Gallery, Chicago; and draw_drawing 2, The London Biennale.

BRADLEY LAMEREMFA, University of Pennsylvania; BFA, Syracuse University. Bradley LaMere is an interdisciplinary artist and dedicated arts educator. He has taught drawing at Syracuse University and was involved in the Undergraduate Fine Arts Program at the University of Pennsylvania. He specializes in teaching all levels of observational drawing and design and has taught painting and color theory. Bradley received a fellowship to study abroad at the Frank Mohr Instituut in Groningen, The Netherlands and in January 2012 was the featured artist in Saatchi Magazine. ERIN CASEY MCNICHOL BA, Advertising, Pennsylvania State University. Erin McNichol teaches art at Ursuline Academy, with experience in both corporate communications and in the ad agency side. Erin combines this expertise in marketing and creativity with visual art specifically painting, design and mixed media. Erin has been active as a studio artist, teaching artist, and education committee member at DCCA, a board member and CabSummer art teacher at Cab Calloway, and shows work locally in Wilmington. She began her art career in Luxembourg, Europe where she started her Face to Face © series of city landmarks.

DIANE TREACY KEESEEComing from a background in fine art and commercial photography, Diane Treacy Keesee began to study and compose silk paintings in 1996. She has studied silk painting with Broadway costume designer and fashion artist Sissi Siska, silk painter and author Susan Moyer and designer Jo Hill. Diane has exhibited her work at the International National Silk Painters Exhibit in Hoboken, NJ, the Rehoboth Art League, and on the Wilmington Art Loop.

ECHO SHI VOLLAM.F.A, New York Academy of Art; AFA in animation, Delaware College of Art and Design. Echo Shi Volla was born in BeiJing, China. She is bilingual, speaking Mandarin Chinese and English. Prior to completing her MFA degree in New York, Echo has taught several Continuing Education Courses at DCAD. Ms. Shi has worked as an assistant for numerous commercial storyboard projects including Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Discovery Kids. In addition, she also worked on comic books like “Fear Agent”, “Teenage Ninja Turtles" and “Elvira”. Her imagination for her jewelry is sparked by her experiences; using silversmithing techniques Pat currently works in silver, copper and brass. PATRICIA WHITMANAbout six years ago, Patricia discovered and fell in love with the techniques and weaves of the ancient art of chain maille. KATHLEEN BUCKALEWMFA, George Washington University; BA, University of Delaware. Photographer Kathleen Buckalew began her work as a photographer for the Design & Exhibition Department of the National Gallery of Art. She has won numerous awards for her work, including a fellowship from the Delaware Division of the Arts; a resident fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and was named the McKinstry Scholar by the Delaware Heritage Commission in 2005 for her continuing work on her project of documenting farmers in Delaware. Kathleen has exhibited her work across the U.S. In 2011, Ms. Buckalew was one of the artists included in the book, 100 Artists of the Brandywine Valley. She is a member of the Diamond State Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, the Delaware Press Association, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, the Center for the Creative Arts, and is an active member of a group she co-founded, called the Brandywine Photo Collective.

RANDY CIURLINOMS, University of Massachusetts. Randy has been engaged in photography for 25 years working professionally, freelancing and doing personal work.

SUSAN ELLISBA English/Humanities, Rutgers University; MS Biology/Behavioral Ecology, York University. Susan’s photographic work focuses on the small. Her images have been reproduced in government, trade and public publications. Current projects include a book of insect images and several exhibits. www.bugsinthesystem.net

RANDLE REEDBFA, Pratt Institute. Randle has experienced the wide spectrum of trade that photography has to offer, from wedding photography to editorial print work. Randle has been teaching photography in DCAD’s Continuing Education program since 2009. He translates the adventure of creating an image to the classroom and the studio through a variety of experience-driven classes. He works as a freelance photographer and exhibits his fine art photography locally.

LEON SYFRITLeon Syfrit is a photographer who works in the Greater Philadelphia and Tri-State area. Currently, Leon teaches photography and lectures at the Delaware College of Art and Design and assists a Philadelphia based, commercial/editorial photographer. Photography began as a hobby for Leon, and he eventually left his job at a local bank to formally pursue his interest in photography by enrolling at the Delaware College of Art and Design. After completing the Associate of Fine Arts program at DCAD, Leon went on to complete his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Leon’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Philadelphia History Museum, The Free Library of Pennsylvania, and the University of Maryland hospital.

CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP T COURSE ID: PH0063 Instructor: Leon Syfrit SIX SESSIONS Monday, Jan. 5 – Feb. 9; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $250 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUsJourney into the past and discover the beauty and simplicity of the cyanotype photographic process. We will briefly explore the history of the cyanotype process, and view samples of successful cyanotype images before creating our own. Students will learn how to make a digital negative, examine several methods for applying the cyanotype emulsion on paper, and be introduced to the ultraviolet light box as a method of image exposure. This workshop will also introduce students to several household items that may be used to tone their finished cyanotype prints. No previous photographic knowledge is required for this workshop. Students will need to provide a picture to create their digital negative. The best approach will be to store an image on a flash drive or portable hard drive to bring to class. Students will gain an understanding of making cyanotypes as well as become familiar with the necessary tools and methodology for continued cyanotype success.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY I COURSE ID: PH0017 Instructor: Kathy Buckalew TWELVE SESSIONS Tuesday, Sept. 9 – Nov. 25; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $490 / Lab Fee: $35; 4 CEUs This course is designed for the novice and stresses basic photographic principles in a digital platform. Students will learn to make critical decisions in image making from visualization to print. Basic digital camera functions will be covered including exposure aperture, shutter speed, ISO, metering, image capture and file types. Students will transfer images to a high-end digital work station where basic editing, retouching, color management and printing will be covered using the latest version of Adobe Photoshop. Critical discussion of both print and screen images will occur weekly to enhance the student’s understanding of subject matter, composition and other aesthetic considerations. At least two class periods will be reserved for photo field trips so that students can practice what is covered with the instructor’s supervision. Students must provide their own transportation for scheduled field trips.

Each week we will shoot on location at various local destinations, and have class critiques to further develop our understanding of the technical and creative possibilities of photography. We will continue to refine our understanding of Adobe Bridge and Adobe Photoshop in an effort to streamline our personal digital workflow and photo editing. Each student will need to provide a DSLR camera for this course, and their own transportation to designated shoot locations.

DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE ID: PH0014 Instructor: Randy Ciurlino TEN SESSIONS Tuesday, Sept. 9 – Nov. 11; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $400 / Lab Fee: $35; 4 CEUsThis course will help students create a portfolio of 10 to 20 images documenting a subject of personal intrigue. Students will learn to photograph both interior and exterior situations both serious and lighthearted. During class we will examine the history of documentary photography from Mathew Brady’s pictures of the Civil War to cell phone snapshots. Through critiques, discussions and assignments, students will build a documentary which could result in a self-published book. Introductory black and white photo experience is required as well as a 35mm Single Lens Reflex camera (digital or analog).

EMULATION: MASTERWORKS IN PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE ID: PH0058 Instructor: Randle Reed SIX SESSIONS Wednesday, Sept. 10 – Oct. 15; 6 PM – 9:15 PM NON–CREDIT Tuition: $250 / Lab Fee: $35; 2 CEUsIn this six-session course, students will be inspired and challenged to invoke the spirit of master photographers. Each class will be dedicated to a specific, iconic photographer, his/her techniques, approach and point of view as the catalyst for the students’ own work. Students will become acquainted with each photographer through discussion of their importance in the evolution of the history of photography, with subjects as diverse as landscape, portraiture and still life. Explore the imagination, creative process, diversity and immense beauty created by these masters while conceiving and executing new work for your portfolio. MACROPHOTOGRAPHY I COURSE ID: PH0034 Instructor: Susan Ellis SIX SESSIONS Monday, Sept. 8 – Oct. 13; 6 – 9:15 PMNON–CREDIT Tuition: $250 / $35 lab fee; 2 CEUSLearn the dramatic art of close-up photography. This course will focus on observing and finding potentially powerful photographs of very small objects that you find visually compelling up close. Topics will include maximizing depth of field, lighting your subject, composing your images and finding subject matter. A digital SLR with a close-up lens is best, but automatic cameras with macro capabilities are fine, as are film cameras.

PHOTOGRAPHY CERTIFICATE

This program is designed for beginning photographers, artists, designers or anyone who would like to take their photographic vision and current knowledge to another level. If you are interested in changing careers or personal growth, these classes will provide a course of study that will take you through the fundamentals, as well as intermediate and advanced levels of black and white and digital photography. Aesthetics, process and individual creative vision will be emphasized to help students find their own unique style. Students acquire the technical skills to shoot, manipulate and print photographs with film and digital technology in courses that emphasize camera techniques, lighting methods and use of computer software for modifying and printing digital files. In addition, students will begin to build a body of work and a professional portfolio.

Since 2008, the Delaware College of Art and Design has welcomed the community to our Drawing Marathon, created to develop your artistic vision, sharpen your skills, and energize your studio experience through figure drawing. DCAD’s event is inspired by the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture which founded the Drawing Marathon over 20 years ago with the belief that drawing is the basis of understanding of one’s experience of the world. Today, drawing marathons are a worldwide trend, spanning the U.S. and globe. We again welcome you to become one of the over 500 participants who have joined us in over 100 hours of drawing.

For this special event, DCAD’s Toni & Stuart B. Young Gallery in DCAD’s historic landmark building will be transformed into a 5,000-square-foot studio where from 9 AM to 9 PM you will work alongside DCAD’s faculty, staff, students and artists of all experience levels.

Come for one hour or stay for all 12! DCAD faculty will be on hand to provide critiques, if desired, during breaks. Light refreshments will be provided.

Please bring your own drawing or painting supplies. Please note that seating is limited for this very special event. Advance registration is strongly recommended.

TUITION AND FEESTuition and lab fees (if applicable) are indicated as part of the course description. A non-refundable registration fee of $25 is required each semester. Tuition and fees must be paid in full prior to the registration deadline. A fee of $25 will be charged for returned checks and/or declined credit card charges. Students enrolling in an open studio class are not required to pay a registration fee and receive no grades or continuing education units.

NON–CREDIT COURSES & TUITIONStudents who enroll in a Non-Credit Continuing Education course may request a Pass/Fail grade upon course completion. Students receive continuing education units (CEUS) upon successful completion of a class. CEUs are nationally-recognized units earned by participation in qualified Continuing Education Programs which document non-credit work completed. One CEU is awarded for every 10 hours of class participation. CEUs are not equivalent to college credits and no letter grade or official transcript is provided for non-credit coursework.

COURSE CANCELLATIONS AND CHANGESThe Delaware College of Art and Design reserves the right to cancel, close or reschedule any course due to insufficient enrollment or to change the instructor.
