Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Theory Program .
Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Rudiments classes will

recognition of keys, transposition, analysis and musical
terms . Intermediate Rudiments adds cadences and Advanced
Rudiments adds score types .

must register directly with the Royal Conservatory of Music if
they wish to write the exam) .
BASIC RUDIMENTS

Individual Instruction
Learning to play an instrument is one of the greatest gifts
you can give yourself or your child . The Conservatory
of Performing Arts has been offering high quality music
instruction in Regina for almost 100 years . From voice to
violin, music lessons teach more than just tunes .
HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION
Our instructors are among the best in the province . Many
hold university degrees and perform with the Regina
Symphony Orchestra as well as in their own groups and
ensembles . Most importantly, Conservatory instructors
nurture and develop students to their highest potential .
THE RIGHT AGE
Quite often, we are asked what the ‘ideal age’ is for beginning
music lessons . The answer is any age can be the right age
to begin . It really depends on the child and the instrument
chosen . String lessons often begin with students as young as
four with active parental involvement . Piano lessons can begin
as soon as the child is tall enough to sit at the bench and
reach the keys, although beginning around the age of six or
seven is more common .
Many students begin playing piano, violin, cello and guitar
at a young age . As they grow older and develop physically,
they can begin to explore other instruments . Often students
begin taking lessons on winds and brass instruments to
complement their school band program .
Starting music lessons is a personal decision for every family
and depends on the maturity, interest and motivation of your
child regardless of age .
HOW MUSIC LESSONS WORK
Music lessons at the Conservatory are taught one-on-one with
an instructor and are typically once a week for 30 minutes .
Lessons are available seven days a week and generally take
place after school and on weekends . The Conservatory also
offers lessons during the day if desired . Lessons run from
September to early June, but students may begin at any time
during the year .

1912 - 2012
100 Years of Music Education
In 1912, the Conservatory of Performing Arts was born, giving Regina College a unique, interesting and prestigious music culture enjoyed by the students and community.
Music became engrained in the College’s activities from annual spring banquets to the Student Christian Movement fireside program. Once a week, a chapel period held music concerts performed by faculty and students. When students had lessons or practiced, music could be heard across the College.
The Conservatory provided a vibrant musical life in the community. People en-joyed regular performances by groups led by faculty members – church choirs, the Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Society. In the 1920’s and 30’s, the Conservatory’s popularity and influence on music in the city attracted many celebrities like Lawrence Tibbet, Marcel Dupré and Fritz Kreisler to perform here.
Its popularity and influence spread throughout southern Saskatchewan, giving Regina College a more esteemed profile. Many students from across the prov-ince came to the Conservatory for music training, most returning to their small communities to teach music locally.
The Conservatory’s strong success was largely a result of such high quality faculty members and students’ passion for the arts, something that has been consistent for 100 years.
Realize. A lifetime of music then.
Source: An Act of Faith: The Early Years of Regina Collge by James M. Pitsula
100 years later, the Conservatory has transformed into a hub for both leisure and fundamental study of music in the community. It boasts a wide range of music and performing arts programs from Kindermusik to adult group guitar and ensemble programs to individual instruction.
Over 1,500 students of all ages enjoy high quality music education at the Conservatory. Some take classes out of interest and to learn something new, while others strongly focus on their music studies to successfully enrol in top university music programs and ultimately have a bright career in performing arts.
Over the years, many students have had the opportunity to perform with the Regina Symphony Orchestra such as the Child/Parent Strings Ensemble. The Conservatory also provides educational theatre productions to local schools giving students an interesting learning experience.
We can expect to see more creation and expansion of programs and learning opportunities at the Conservatory over the next 100 years.

We started hosting University of Regina ESL
students in 2000 when our children grew
up and started to move away . It is a source
of delight as we make so many new friends .
We have hosted a number of students over
the years, and each one is different . Through
the students, we learn about their homes
and cultures, and are able to show them a
little of our culture as well . We especially

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
Expert’s Tip
Susan Seida, PMP, Project Management Instructor
Project management continues to become the
recognized “tool” of choice for organizations .
Project management offices are becoming
common place and companies are realizing the
value of having properly trained project managers .
Often times however, a project’s Sponsor is
selected solely because of their position within the
organization or their availability . This role, which
is critical to the success of the project, can be
difficult to step in to without any background in
project management .
Sit down early with your Project Manager to
understand what is expected of you and what
you can expect from your Project Manager as the
project moves forward . Most importantly, as you
take on this new role, know what the end result
should be . As a Sponsor, you need to be invested
in what the project outcomes should be and
understand how they align with your company’s
strategic goals .
Professional Development Programs Advance Careers . . .
“I completed the Professional
Leadership Certificate and
Professional Management
Certificate . People have noticed a
change in me and with this change
new opportunities and challenges
have been awarded to me .”

Accessibility PolicyMost of the Centre for Continuing Education’s courses are delivered at the inter-connected College Building (CB), Conservatory (CN), and Gallery Building (GA) located at College Avenue between Cornwall and Scarth Street . As these buildings were constructed in approximately 1912, they do not have many modern features such as elevators that assist persons who require special needs access . Nevertheless, the Centre for Continuing Education has committed to make every possible physical accommodation, in accordance with the U of R policy, that may be required by its students and customers .
The main floor of the College Building is accessible to wheelchairs or other motorized personal transportation devices via a ramp on the south side of the building . The door entering the building is equipped with a push-type of bar device that can be operated by most persons with physical disabilities . Persons with physical disabilities are able to access the main floor of the College Building including several classrooms, coffee room, and accessible washrooms in the Conservatory . The Gallery Building has a ramp leading into its front entrance on the north side of the building .
Parking for vehicles displaying the appropriate parking permit is available at the front of the Gallery Building (north side on Ramsay Drive) and also adjacent to the ramps mentioned above . Parking questions should be directed to the University’s Parking Services Office at 306-585-5555 . (See map on page 48 .)
Any student with a disability who may need accommodations should discuss these with the course instructor (if applicable) and contact the Coordinator of the Centre for Student Accessibility at 306-585-4631 .
