We believe that hunger is a symptom of the deeper problem of poverty, and food is our tool for changing lives and addressing systemic failures.

OUR THEORY OF CHANGE:

Page 3: DC Central Kitchen Annual Impact Report Fiscal Year 2017 · World Bank Community Connections Fund $50,000 - $99,999 Kaiser Permanente Foundation Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation

We’re preparing adults with high barriers to employment – histories of incarceration, addiction, homelessness, abuse, and trauma – for careers in the culinary industry.

We’re transforming food that would otherwise be wasted into nutritious meals for local shelters and nonprofits.

We’re serving award-winning, farm-to-school menus to DC students while creating living-wage careers for previously unemployed adults who have completed our training program.

We’re expanding healthy food access by making affordable, nutritious food available for sale in corner stores in DC’s food deserts.

We’re empowering the next generation of leaders to fight hunger and food waste. At Campus Kitchens across the country, students transform surplus food into healthy meals.

TEST INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO SYSTEMIC FAILURESWe believe long-standing problemsrequire new solutions.

MASS INCARCERATIONOur graduates with histories of incarceration were 91% less likely to re-offend when compared to the national average for returning citizens. Just this year, our efforts to put people back to work and break the cycle of incarceration saved taxpayers $1.2 million.

FOOD WASTEWe advocated for the “Save Good Food Act,” local legislation to decrease food waste in Washington, DC.

FOOD DESERTSWe conducted our first-ever geo-targeted marketing campaign for Healthy Corners, advertising on metro stations and bus lines in DC’s Ward 8. This campaign increased sales at targeted stores by as much as 96%.

MEET CHRIS

Chris arrived at DC Central Kitchen after serving a 14-year prison sentence and struggling with a history of abuse. “For a long time, I didn’t like who I was, and I hid from the truth,” he explains.

After completing our training program, Chris joined our team full-time at DC Central Kitchen’s social enterprise hub. Within a year, he saved up enough money to take his first vacation to reunite with his family in Hawaii. Since then, he has moved into his own apartment and taken on the additional role of resident manager of his building. “Today, I have no shame of my truth,” he says.

MEET ALIYAH

Although 19-year-old Aliyah had overcome significant challenges before coming to DC Central Kitchen, she was still struggling to secure reliable employment and achieve financial stability. “My life was in completely shattered pieces,” she recalls. Aliyah was ready for a change but lacked the training she needed to enter the workforce. After graduating from DC Central Kitchen, Aliyah was hired full-time at Marriott Marquis as the youngest employee on the team. She now has a promising career ahead of her and the financial means to support herself and rent her own apartment. “I wouldn’t be here without DC Central Kitchen,” she says.
