We are pleased to report that 2017 was a most productive year for BUILD, as we dramatically expanded community engagement, strengthened key partnerships, and launched innovative new programs to reach 3,356 youth, up 60%. Fueled by the increasing needs of Chicago’s youth and a record-breaking $706,000 boost from our 2017 Gala Celebration, we grew our budget by 14.7% to $2.7 million. And, our sound fiscal management earned us yet another Four Star Rating from Charity Navigator. Our collaborative leadership style brought us new allies, culminating in June’s Austin Summer of Opportunity, drawing 65 partners and 3,000 residents to celebrate community and replace violence with jobs, arts, sports, education, and other meaningful opportunities. Our friends at Breakthru Beverage Illinois made a huge difference in providing leadership, resources, logistical help, and more than 250 volunteers. We also grew our programs to put on the street and in the schools more gang intervention, violence prevention, and educational outreach workers. We expanded BUILD’s Block 51 arts program, and coordinated evening activities as part of a new partnership with Communities Partnering 4 Peace. New initiatives included: The Black Table and La Mesa Latina - dialogues to connect youth to prominent African American and Latino leaders; our Youth Innovation Conference at Columbia College; and, BUILDing Girls 2 Woman program to support our highest risk teen girls. Equally important, this past year we prepared for our future, entering 2018 with an ambitious new strategic plan and a $3.5 million budget. We also laid the groundwork to launch crucial growth as we mark BUILD’s 50th anniversary of serving Chicago’s young people. The needs of Chicago’s highest risk youth continue to rise. We want to be there to serve them.

Thanks to friends like you, BUILD is moving quickly into an exciting new era. On behalf of the entire BUILD family, we are grateful for your generous and steadfast support.

THE PATH TO TRANSFORMATION

HOW DO WE TRANSFORM THE FUTURE?

BUILD is a beacon of hope in the six Chicago neighborhoods we serve. Community is where we experience the world, engage the people we care about, and dream about the future. It matters.

CONNECT TO COMMUNITY

AUSTIN | HUMBOLDT PARK | EAST GARFIELD PARK | HERMOSA | LOGAN SQUARE | FULLER PARK

We live these values by building respect into every relationship, and helping our neighbors without hesitation. Our youth learn to see community pride as a leadership trait. We hire from our neighborhoods,

shop locally, and channel resources to our partners whenever possible.

Page 5: BUILDING OPPORTUNITY Transforming THE FUTURE › wp-content › uploads › ... · Stuart & Tatum Reed $50,000 & $99,999 John & Christine Bakalar Dr. Scholl Foundation Exelon Foundation

PUTTING THE NEIGHBOR BACK IN THE ‘HOOD No community should be captive to gangs and violence. BUILD helps reclaim hot spots and create safe spaces for

the neighborhood to come together, heal, and grow. Whether it’s conflict mediation by a gang intervention

specialist, a pop-up block party or sidewalk art project, or a major community-wide event, BUILD is always there.

FAMILY COMMUNITY NIGHTS BUILD hosts more than 50 events a year, including

Family Community Nights at different sites each month.Activities include the arts, sports, parent resources,

and job opportunities. All are welcome!

HOME GROWN SOLUTIONS80% of our staff and management reflect the

neighborhoods, cultures, or backgrounds of the youth we serve. We hire and spend locally, because it makes our work stronger and puts resources where they are needed.

HOW DO WE TRANSFORM THE FUTURE?COLLABORATE FOR CHANGE

BUILD takes a collaborative approach to leadership that creates trust and inspires collective action. We know that meaningful change is always a group effort.

Strong partnerships are built on shared values, humility, and courage. We listen closely and look for common ground, but if the status quo doesn’t work, we speak up, respectfully but emphatically.

We set the bar high, and lead by example every day.

Page 7: BUILDING OPPORTUNITY Transforming THE FUTURE › wp-content › uploads › ... · Stuart & Tatum Reed $50,000 & $99,999 John & Christine Bakalar Dr. Scholl Foundation Exelon Foundation

MANY LEADERS, ONE COMMUNITY BUILD works with Austin Coming Together (ACT),

a multi-issue community group, to connect to other strategies for strengthening the neighborhood.

We also provide leadership by serving on ACT’s board.

THE BUSINESS OF CHANGE BUILD benefits from partnering with business leaders,

such as Breakthru Beverage Illinois, who provide invaluable resources and volunteers, impacting and

improving our services and the community.

IN SCHOOLS AND ON THE STREETS BUILD ‘s 2017 school partners include:

Aspira, Erie, Leland, Nash, Piccolo, and Spencer Elementary Schools; as well as Academy of Scholastic

Achievement, Al Raby, Aspira, Austin, Kelvyn Park, Michele Clark, Orr, and Phillips High Schools.

Staff also work with youth in area correctional facilities.

HOW DO WE TRANSFORM THE FUTURE?CULTIVATE CAPACITY TO MEET CHANGING NEEDS

Without coaching, great talents are wasted. Without caring relationships, the warmest hearts grow cold. Without treatment, the scars of poverty and violent trauma take decades to heal.

‘Without’ is a waste. Young people deserve our help today.

BUILD takes action by piloting new work and investing in the best ideas to create next-generation programs. We accomplish this by leveraging BUILD's proven model that has, since 2003, been rated as an

"Effective Program” by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Page 9: BUILDING OPPORTUNITY Transforming THE FUTURE › wp-content › uploads › ... · Stuart & Tatum Reed $50,000 & $99,999 John & Christine Bakalar Dr. Scholl Foundation Exelon Foundation

BUILDING GIRLS 2 WOMEN This innovative new program targets teen girls who are at

high risk of involvement with gangs, the justice system, or other dangerous activity. The 2017-18 pilot serves

120 young women in Austin and Humboldt Park.

MENTAL HEALTH CARE Chronic trauma increases the risk for depression, PTSD,

substance abuse, and risky sexual behavior. In 2017, BUILD grew its burgeoning clinical services unit to provide

therapy and develop the skills and resilience of our youth.

LEARNING AND LEADERSHIP BUILD’s entrepreneurial approach encourages small,

cost-efficient pilots to test ideas, address emerging needs, and identify scalable work. Examples include Block 51, Arts Boot Camp, BUILD Radio podcast, Iris Community Garden,

Strong Bodies Initiative, and the Ground Up music lab.

I will transform the world because I am gifted, uplifted and endlessly blessed with the skills that BUILD has helped me possess.

In 2019, BUILD will celebrate 50 years of transformational work - work that has touched the lives of thousands since our early days as gang intervention pioneer in Chicago’s West Town community. We’ve evolved in many ways: adding violence prevention programs for younger children; increasing support for college access and career success; and, weaving the arts and healthy living into all of our work.

This tradition of leadership continues today, as generations of BUILD alumni succeed in all walks of life, support their families, and provide leadership in our communities.

Yet the headlines remind us every day that we can’t stand still. Chicago’s youth need BUILD, more than ever.

With the increasing demand for BUILD's services, however, come serious challenges. As our programs expand, our Austin headquarters overflow with youth, staff, and volunteers, while we have grown rapidly in other neighborhoods, as well. To better serve our young people and to invest in the professional growth of our staff, it is crucial that we take important steps forward.

As BUILD approaches our 50th Anniversary, we have a tremendous need and an exciting opportunity to shape the “BUILD 2.0” that will change lives for decades to come.

But we can’t do it alone. We need the support of people who have the courage to care about young people they may never meet.

There are many ways to get involved, starting with a visit to our new website at www.buildchicago.org / Here, you can learn more, sign up to volunteer, or make a tax-deductible gift. And by all means, if you are in the neighborhood, please drop by. Some things are best experienced in person.

Our sense of hope is contagious. Our opportunities are boundless. We hope you will join BUILD on our exciting path forward.

If you would like to support BUILD’s future, please contact Adam Alonso at 773-227-2880
