Until about 1935, motorcyclists didn’t wear helmets – with tragic consequences. Seat belts in cars? It seems strange now, but they only became mandatory for the first time in 1970. Likewise, the neck brace is the most recent safety innovation that will hopefully become simple common sense. Leatt-Brace®’s are lab-designed to fit most riders: young or old, amateur or professional, but most importantly, they’re built and tested to help lessen the risk of injury when riding. It’s just that simple.

The Leatt® Lab, based in Cape Town, South Africa, is Leatt®’s home of research & development. Here dr. Leatt and his team of engineers and designers conceptualise and test new products and constantly strive to improve existing products even further. The facility features state-of-the-art testing and prototyping equipment that enables the team to take a product from conceptualization, through testing, all the way to pre-production prototypes. While the majority of Leatt®’s r&d gets done at the cape town facility, collaborations with global partners give our products an international flavour.

The philosophy of testing at Leatt® has been to develop test rigs and methods that allow comprehensive in-house testing and exploration of product performance. Using a range of real life scenarios similar to the types of situations that might be encountered in the appropriate form of racing or other accident, tests are conducted at intensity levels that allow Leatt® engineers to fully understand and characterise accident dynamics and product / rider interaction, in order to optimize product performance.

It also gives Leatt® engineers the confidence to expect a first round approval when submitting product to certification facilities, where appropriate, for examination.

Each Leatt® neck brace is designed with a 360º strike platform. This is necessary to ensure you have all round safety. The platform is also designed not too hook your helmet, which could lead to very serious injuries.

To help ensure our neck braces don’t cause you harm in an accident we have engineered

them with crumple zones. These zones are specific areas that break away when the

forces caused by the accident are too great.

The Leatt® neck brace is made using only high quality materials like

aramid fibre, carbon fibre, fiberglass reinforced nylon, arctic fusion

compound (AFC), Leatt® high impact polymer (LHIP), and shock-

absorbing materials like our injected padding or biofoam (biofoam is

also fully replaceable and washable). This is done to assist with the

engineered technology that has been put into our neck braces.

From the biomedical engineers and medical staff of the Leatt® research labs comes a 100% new neck brace for 2014. We believe that the 5.5 neck brace is truly the most technologically advanced neck brace in the world. The CE certified 5.5 neck brace balances the needs of comfort, effectiveness and safety by allowing greater freedom of movement and adjustment to more closely meet the needs of top level racers whilst Leatt®’s commitment to safety ensures that key safety features pioneered by Leatt® are built into each brace.

The core of what makes our neck braces work is Alternative Load Path Technology (ALPT®) and for the ALPT to work optimally neck braces must fit correctly. The adjustability built into all Leatt® neck braces is not just for comfort, but to ensure a correct fit that assists in optimizing effectiveness of your neck brace. We believe that no other neck brace can be adjusted to fit riders as well as a Leatt®. The front and rear sliding SureFit adjusters can be set for your personal body shape, without tools, in less than 30 seconds. The brace can also be readjusted as necessary for growing kids or when worn with different apparel. To further optimize fit, the new and improved CoreFlex rear thoracic strut has an exclusive feature that allows it to be adjusted to 4 setting angles. This is done with a simple elastomeric bumper that can be set at 0, 5, 10 or 15 degrees in seconds.

The 5.5 has lowered side areas, below the ear, that increases comfort and wearability, especially on kids, smaller statured riders and riders with shorter necks. A simple pop off shoulder pad that can raise or lower your brace to suit your neck length or helmet rim profiles. Both the front and the back feature has the new split design that promotes broader dissipation of energy transmitted to the body and have new molded padding for greater comfort. The semi-rigid chassis is flexible and adjustable enough to fit most riders’ body shape while the structure remains rigid enough to help transmit energy during an impact while multiple engineered fracture points and crumple zones will bend or break away at pre-determined stress levels to help contribute to a riders’ safety. The new and improved CoreFlex rear thoracic strut is more comfortable than ever and still has the engineered fracture point at the top that allows it to break away in certain severe impacts. If broken this strut can be purchased as a replacement part and easily changed out. The strut is lined with the same soft padding as on all the surfaces that ride against your body and this protective padding is on the brace edges facing inwards towards the soft tissues of the neck. The injected foam padding is more durable and easier to clean than ever before and designed to accommodate custom sticker kits.

As your core temperature rises, physical and mental performance suffers and you’re not able to perform at your peak. This rising core temperature is also dangerous and can result in heat stroke that may be fatal in extreme circumstances. The Coolit products work pretty easy. Submerse your Coolit product in water

for about 2 minutes, squeeze out excess water, put it on and go ride. The coolit

Heat is the athlete’s enemy. Outside heat as well as excessive core heat, inside your body, can reduce athletic and mental performance. The Leatt® Pre-Cooling vest is designed to help keep your body cool, even reduce your standing body temperature, before you compete and allow you to cool down quicker after the event.

Four Cool Pax™ inserts (two in the junior size) maintain a comfortable temperature of 58°F (or 14°C) for up to 3 hours. Wearing the Pre-Cool Vest before an event keeps the athlete as fresh as possible up they are until ready to compete. Do not wear the vest during the competition! Then put the vest back on after the competition for quicker recovery.

The fabric vest itself should be soaked a minimum of 2 minutes in cool water and helps cool the body through evaporation. With the Cool Pax™ removed the vest can be worn during competitions, while soaked, but never to be worn after it has become dry.
