Locality, sustainability, seasonality and unbridled passion for all year round environmental growing practices are attributes purely personified by the area’s small-scale orchards, vineyards, farmers and producers. Visit Bacchus Marsh, Seymour or Upper Plenty and weave your way through orchards and gardens growing a vast range of fruit, vegetables and herbs.

Organic, heirloom and everyday produce is what the region does best. Growers and producers located through the Daylesford Hepburn part of the region give thanks to the Swiss-Italian settlers who landed in the 1850s and 60s, bringing their passion for food and wine to the rich and fertile land they called home.

Think cherries, zucchinis and beans in summer, rare varieties of mushrooms in autumn and up to 30 kinds of potatoes and root vegetables in winter. Biodynamic and organic practices are taken very seriously by the many local food businesses, with ever evolving techniques. Free-range meats, meat products and organic poultry hail from rare-breed farms, and lovingly handmade specialty cheeses made from cow, sheep and goat’s milk steadily receive countless awards. Let’s not forget the superior taste of the year-long supplies of trout, Murray River cod, eels and yabbies, plus the rich extra virgin olive oils and an array of specialty products fit for anyone’s pantry; king or peasant.

Many of the region’s vignerons are acknowledged as the core of Australia’s best, with some internationally recognised. Many receive accolades for their cool climate wines, sporting unique, distinct and robust flavours. This is home to some of Victoria’s most established growers; here wines of distinction emerge from the cold climate, as true winners. Sunbury, with its warmer & drier climate, claims some of the oldest vineyards, most with welcoming cellar doors offering tastings all year round. Crafted beers from numerous local breweries in - locations such as Tooboorac found in Tooboorac and Woodend, can also be visited. D I D YO U K N OW… ? Per capita, the Macedon Ranges has more professional artists than anywhere else in Victoria.

The Macedon Regional Park was the natural backdrop used by Frederick McCubbin when he painted his famous triptych The Pioneer (1904).

Creswick is the birthplace of the Lindsays, perhaps Australia’s best known artistic family including: Percy Lindsay (landscape painter) and Norman Lindsay (painter, sculptor and writer), who immortalised the town in his novel Redheap.

The heritage streetscapes of Clunes have featured in Australian films: Ned Kelly (starring Heath Ledger), Mad Max (starring Mel Gibson), whilst Hanging Rock was the backdrop for the classic Picnic at Hanging Rock (starring Anne Lambert).

2. The story of the Sanatorium Lake

Loop around the peaceful tree-fringed Sanatorium Lake, constructed to supply water to a tuberculosis sanatorium built nearby in 1899 but later destroyed by fire. You can see the nearby forest changing and evolving as it has sprung back to life after the devastating effects of the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. The trail also passes the site of an old plant nursery near the Sanatorium Picnic Ground.

The pristine beauty of the region’s landscapes provides nature-loving visitors with a variety of rejuvenating walks, challenging mountain bike trails, horse riding, golfing, fishing, and so much more. Behind the walls of the impressive Mount Macedon mansions hide some of Victoria’s finest gardens, many National Trust-listed. Time your visit for the occasional open days in spring and autumn and delight in classic landscaping, as well as quaint cottage gardens. Be sure to check out specialist nurseries like The Garden of St Erth in Blackwood and the Mount Macedon Horticultural Society’s Rare Plant Fair in September.

Walks and tracks traverse bush and cool alpine forests. Stroll amongst a variety of eucalypts and spring wildflowers. Popular wildlife like grey kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and 150 species of birds will invigorate you – that is, if you catch a sighting! Standout historic Goldfields track will take you from Ballarat to Bendigo through the old townships of, Hepburn, Daylesford and Creswick providing you with history and filling your heritage bag along the way.

Choose the Wallaby Track, made up of six shorter walks, and wind through the Wombat Forest and across the Great Dividing Range,

from Mt Buninyong to Daylesford, or branch off and take the Dry Diggings Track to link from Daylesford to Castlemaine. Together both walks total 58 kilometres.

If you feel like a native forest extravaganza, check out the Forest Ecotourism Walking Trail. Feel your way through opulent ferns and catch a glimpse of gorgeous Aussie-exclusive mammals. What do you love about where you live?I live here at Living Legends – an exclusive retirement village for Champion horses like myself. I won the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double in 1997 and share my golden years with other champions. I hang out with Doriemus, Better Loosen Up and Rogan Josh. Yes we are all legends. We live here in this world of horse & hoof luxury. Pampered to the point of perfection.

What is your favourite secret location in the region?I’ll tell you about my special place. Odds are that most horses haven’t discovered my secret and it’s only 50 metres from my paddock. The spectacular power of the planes taking off and landing at the Tullamarine Airport. So many horses coming and going. I feel empowered when the planes roar in the air above me on take-off and when you watch them glide into land. It’s a favourite.

What couldn’t you live without in the region?I put on my blinkers and gallop out to Sunbury where I can catch-up with my equine buddies in top notch café’s in O’Shannasy St. The feed out there is quality, the service is Cracker Jack and it won’t cost you big bickies.

What is the best part of waking up in the region?The boys and I all love the hundreds of kangaroos here at Living Legends. Such unusual and awkward looking beasts. I’ll wake up in the morning with a sea of kangaroos surrounding me in my paddock. Little joeys hopping and wobbling around their mums and the big buxom bucks. It’s a beautiful way to start my day – but they are a little funny looking.

What are your top five must do’s in your backyard when visitors come?Climb Hanging Rock, stay a while, absorb the beauty of it. Relive the Peter Weir film, listen to the pipes. Imagine Miranda is about to materialise around the next corner. Take it slowly.

Visit the Memorial Cross. Take time to read the plaques, the history. Especially, be there on Anzac Day - at the dawn service. It can bring you to tears!

The gardens of Mount Macedon are wonderful. Especially those attached to the old hill station properties - like Alton with its heritage listed trees over 100 years old. The open garden scheme gives you that chance - take it up every time you can.

Markets - farmers markets, craft markets - there’s one on nearly every Saturday. Get to know the vendors - full of colour, information and enthusiasm.

Have a meal with Annie Smithers. Our legend. At her restaurant, Du Fumier in Trentham, you can only eat what she wants you to. It’s seasonal, home grown produce. Unbelievably good.

If you could paint a picture of any scenery in the region, what would you paint?We see Hanging Rock all the time, from our lofty spot, just to the north. There it is poking through the swirling mists, pink in the early morning sun. Mount Macedon in the background. It typifies everything our region has to offer. A painting!

What is the best part of waking up in the region?When we were designing our wine labels, our designer introduced a horizontal red stripe. Instantly we knew it was the morning sun, bouncing off the clouds to the east, just before sunrise. Later, we found it was also the setting sun. Morning or evening, the colours are magnificent.

What is your favourite time of year in the region and why? There’s no doubt - it’s autumn. The colours, (Honour Avenue at Macedon is absolutely spectacular) the crisp mornings, beautiful days and balmy evenings. It’s also vintage, the grape pickers in the vineyard, the camaraderie during and after a hard day, the flavours and smells. It’s the culmination of of our year. We love it.

Camels Hump The Camels Hump is the highest point in the Macedon Ranges, with a lookout offering visitors spectacular views. This is one of three local rocky outcrops formed by volcanic action millions of years ago. Generally quieter than Hanging Rock and you can take your dog.

For grand flower-admiration time, the Springhill Peony Farm is also in the vicinity. Learn about the simply stunning multi-layered, often fragrant flowers. The farm, established in 2001, grows the peonies organically and sustainably for the flower market. The peony plants are for sale, but make sure you live in a cooler climate before you plant.

Nearby Malmsbury is another historical town which has ties to the 1850s gold rush. It was the ‘hub of amenities’ for the diggers and travellers on track to Bendigo and Castlemaine.

For an excellent coffee, of the same quality as you would get in the big smoke, make a pit-stop at Moto Bean Café. The Malmsbury Bakery is an institution and many have been and lived to tell the tale of the A-grade service and food, an absolute treat in the middle of Country Victoria. A household name in homemade pies, pastries and cakes. Get your art fix next door at Tin Shed Arts, an action packed stop in the main street of Malmsbury, not to be missed.

Finally, if you haven’t had any luck seeing emus while touring Australia take a short drive further to Tooboorac and catch the elegant Emu sculptures in the main street. Like a suit of armour, their feathers cover their life-size bodies.

What do you love about where you live?It’s hard to describe why I love Malmsbury. Something about its old grey bluestone bones, its quietness, its creativity and its community. It is a small village that whilst connected to the broader community, is also quietly apart. It’s impossible to escape history in Malmsbury, with its monumental works in bluestone and infrastructure from past centuries. A tiny little time piece town that lives and breathes in the modern world.

What is your favourite secret location in the region? (Which you may or may not want to share!)My favourite secret location of the region is the walk from the Malmsbury viaduct through to the reservoir. There are so many perfect little detours and sitting spots. Followed close second by my old stomping ground, Jubilee Lake in Daylesford.

What is the best part of waking up in the region?The best part of waking up in the region is that its home. Quiet, beautiful home in my lovely garden.

What is your favourite time of year in the region and why?It’s a hard choice between spring and autumn. For me, the spring is perfect in my garden, but the region is so magnificent in autumn. But then there is deep, dark winter as well....

The towns of Trentham, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs shout out food, glorious food to whoever chooses a gastronomic experience to remember.

Commence in Trentham, amidst the eccentric giant-sized animal sculptures that you’ll spot in the street, enter Redbeard Historic Bakery (open daily 8am till 5pm). Featured in the media, this unique bakery has gained great acclaim due to its historic way of baking its sourdough. The owners pride themselves on using renewable energy sources and heating their traditional oven with ecological sugargum wood.

In between Daylesford and Trentham you will find The Radio Springs Hotel in Lyonville where you can catch a few gigs, hang out in the garden bar and enjoy the design of one of the few red brick buildings (1927) still standing. Another foodie town in the vicinity–Hepburn Springs– showcases the Swiss Italian settlers who came in the late 1800s. With them they certainly brought a sense of elegant occasion, along with their pasta, good bread and sausages. The legacy of these migrants can be fully enjoyed at Lavandula - an idyllic farm that warms the cockles of the heart. The golden stone farm buildings celebrate the immigrant dairy farmers from the 1860s. Visit the original farmhouse, which housed 13 children in the upstairs mezzanine, try some of the lavender-inspired food at the café, or treat yourself to the pampering Lavender and Ylang Ylang and Lavender & Rose Geranium massage oils and lotions. There are also enchanting festivals to attend celebrating the different seasons of the year.

What do you love about where you live?I’ve never been able to put into words what it is that makes a place feel like home. In my case, it’s more about how I feel in my heart, soul and in my gut. Being in this area just feels right. I’m from Sheffield, England and Yuge is from Beijing China... It’s great to have found a new place to call home.

What are your five favourite food or wine spots?We don’t get out much as we are always working and when we’re not working, we like to just enjoy our home and garden. There’s so much that is good in this area but I have to say The Argus in Hepburn Springs is world class. Everything down to the music puts you in a place where you can just stop and be indulged. In Daylesford, we love lunch at Larder.

What are your top five must do’s in your backyard when visitors come?In the area around Daylesford, there are a lot more than five I assure you! Lavandula is always charming and unique. The Mill Markets are fun for bowerbirds. The main

street of Daylesford has hidden aspects, just walk down and eat where you feel, none will disappoint. Any direction you drive in is beautiful. I think just take a step back and you’ll find your way.

What couldn’t you live without in the region?I think the flowers in spring are mindblowing. Everybody loves their gardens and after a chilly winter the gardens throw out a fireworks display that is such a joy to witness.

What is the best part of waking up in the region?Fresh air. Birds flying overhead. The crispness of the air. Knowing there are so many great places to have breakfast. That working here means not having to stress over traffic and parking. Daylesford is unique and waking up here feels a little like days gone by when the world was a little more simple.

Trentham FallsThe Trentham Falls is one of the longest single drop waterfalls in Victoria, plunging some 32 metres over basalt columns. Trentham Falls was formed five million years ago from molten lava rapidly cooling as it flowed along the old Coliban River valley. The Trentham Cascades are a short walk further north from the Falls Reserve car park.

Domino Track Walking TrailAn easy 8km walk following the old railway line from the Trentham heritage listed railway station (no longer in use) into the Wombat Forest. The Trail runs along the rail alignment to Lyonville and is a smooth, wide, all weather trail suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

T O D O Lavandula Swiss Italian FarmRelax in the country, find tranquillity, breathe fresh air, listen to birdsong, be refreshed and enjoy the space and beautiful vistas at Lavandula. At its heart is the golden stone rustica, a cluster of farm buildings constructed by Italians from southern Switzerland who came to look for gold and stayed to farm. Lavender is planted as crop art: in winter it’s trimmed and sculptural; at Christmas the lavender is in flower and is harvested by hand with sickles through the heat of January.

Lake Daylesford In the 1890s the idea of creating a lake close to Daylesford and near the mineral springs was planned several times, but Lake Daylesford didn’t actually get built until 1929 and was officially opened in 1930 with a lot of fanfare and excitement. “We’re blessed with many wonderful waterways around Daylesford. Most are fed by our underground aquifers and mineral springs. Rivers and Lakes, one of our iconic dishes at Lake House, is an array of variously prepared local fresh water fish and crustaceans embellished with the wild fennel and watercress that grows in the area. The dish consists of many elements and techniques. Here I offer a very much shortened recipe for just a couple of those elements.”

Cured Trout, Fennel Salad, Fennel Aioli, Fish CracklingCured Trout 1 x 400gm Trout produces 4 entrée size portions.150 gms salt100 gms sugarZest of one lemon2 sprigs of dill finely chopped

Fillet, skin and pin bone the trout (reserve the skin) or have your local Fish monger do it for you.Mix all the curing ingredients together. Place half the mixture on a sheet of plastic wrap, place trout on top. Cover with remaining mix and wrap up tightly in the plastic wrap. Refrigerate for around 20 mins.Remove fish from the wrap, wash off the cure. Pat fish dry. Refrigerate covered with plastic wrap until ready to use.2 tsps of rinsed and drained Lilliput capersZest of one a lemon2 tsps of finely diced cucumberDice the cured trout, combine with the above ingredients, season and store in the fridge until ready to plate.

Fennel Salad1 medium head of fennel½ tsp fennel seeds (optional)3-4 Fennel fronds (optional)Dressing 1 part lemon juice2 parts Olive oil (Enough to coat the fennel)

Finely shave Fennel using a mandolin.Marinade the fennel in the mixture of Lemon juice and Olive oil.If using, add finely chopped fennel greens and seeds.Season with a small amount of salt.Compress in a vacuum bag or leave covered to marinade for at least 24 hours.Plating: mound the fennel salad onto serving plate, alternately with the diced cured trout. Intersperse with fennel aioli, watercress pure, fennel sprigs and pollen. Garnish with fish skin ‘crackling”

Visitors are instinctively drawn to the scenic parks and cool, relatively-undisturbed forests of this part of our region, with the hope of viewing some of the admired furry creatures seen only in Australia – koalas, kangaroos and (of course) wombats.

The Wombat State Forest and Lerderderg State Park are some of the most wondrous natural locations for spotting these native darlings, along with exploring noteworthy 1860s-heritage cottages and the extinct volcano of Mt Blackwood.

The historic village of Blackwood is located in the scenic Macedon Ranges between Ballan and Trentham. Blackwood was a thriving goldmining town during the 1850s when gold was discovered at nearby aptly-named Golden Point. These days, Blackwood is a peaceful village, situated on the Lerderderg River.

The Blackwood Mineral Springs Reserve is located off Golden Point Road, one kilometre east of the town centre. A small entrance fee allows visitors to picnic and BBQ along the grassy banks of the Lerderderg River. The Reserve features mineral springs, and scenic walking tracks that take you to Shaws Lake via Sweets Lookout.

While you’re in this neck of the woods, sample some of the freshest food in the region by stepping into the Garden St Erth cafe on Simmons Reef Road. The café’s ethos centres on seasonal, local produce dug-up from its gardens. In the style of the St Erth menu, the heirloom veges emerging from the soil are not smothered in fancy sauces, but simply seasoned to enhance the clean flavours.

Within a short distance there is Greendale, adorned by rolling hills and packed full of native flora and fauna, including native bandicoots, dingoes and Quolls (a rat-like marsupial) that eats meat such as small rabbits. Following a day’s hiking, picnicking and hopefully fruitful animal spotting, the 125-year-old Greendale Pub will offer you and your loved ones a relaxed country shelter, a cold beer and comfort food to end a wonderful bush experience. If the kids still have got energy to burn, take them to the Greendale playground located right near the pub.

15 minutes from Greendale is the urban centre of Bacchus Marsh, traditionally known as one of Victoria’ most significant sources of fresh fruit and vegetables. Arrive in this historic town along the breathtaking Avenue of Honour– the 3.5-kilometres ‘elm-tree umbrella’– and savour the splendour of the majestic garden - one of the world’s great ‘living memorials’.

Snap up summertime strawberries, autumnal pumpkins and other seasonal produce grown in nearby orchards, market gardens, market stalls, and roadside vendors. Get into the fields and experience first-hand the simple joy of ‘picking your own’ strawberries, stone fruits, and berries, you can pop a few into your mouth while your hamper gets full. Celebrate the November picking season at the Strawberries and Cherries Festival, move onto apples and pears and mark the season’s impending closure with the March Harvest Festival.

In Ballan savour the best-ever duck sausages from the self-proclaimed ‘regional sausage king’–Salvatore Butcher–and then you can try on, purchase and wear harris tweed hats and caps, cloches and berets at the Gordon Hat Shoppe located in Gordon just 15 minutes west from Ballan.

On the road back to Melbourne, call into St Anne’s Winery in Myrniong, nestled amongst the charming Pentland Hills. This verdant and fertile valley sets the scene not only for award winning wines, but for relaxing escapes, picnics, receptions and more. The bluestone cellar is built from the remnants of Ballarat’s original gaol (1840s).

What do you love about where you live?Clean air, wind and sun on my face and being able to say G’Day to anyone I meet and them replying!!

What is the best part of waking up in the region?You can actually hear the birds more than any other noise.

What do you think is the best kept secret about your backyard/area?Truffles and the mystery that they bring to the region.

When did you officially become a local?I was actually ‘Born Local’. My family was synonymous with logging in the area and sadly I cannot see myself living anywhere else.

What is your favourite time of year in the region and why?I love autumn - it is starting to cool down and everything is slowing down but there are still warm days to be had. And the colourful autumn leaves are just the icing on the cake.

• Know which weather district you are visiting so you can be aware of the Fire Danger Rating for that district and if there are any fire restrictions in place.

• On hot, dry, windy days, check Fire Danger Ratings and warnings. Fires can start and spread quickly on these days and parks and forests may be closed.

• Check to see if a Total Fire Ban has been declared for the area you are visiting.

• Check the weather and listen to local radio for advice and warnings.

• Download the FireReady app.• Save the Victorian Bushfire Information Line

(1800 240 667) into your mobile phone.• Don’t rely on electronic mapping devices as mobile phones and

GPS may be affected by smoke and local conditions. Make sure you carry hard copy local maps and listen to the radio.

• Visit an accredited Visitor Information Centre as staff may be able to suggest alternative holiday activities on high risk days and provide local fire and park information.

• Never travel into a high risk bushfire area where the Code Red Fire Danger Rating has been declared or where fires are burning.
