Cornell Notes: Earth Time
Today, we will be reading as a class from Chapter 10, Section 2 (pages 294-295)
Taking notes and writing definitions to our vocabulary terms is key to success – and our Weekly Quiz 15 is only 2 days away!
The Earth Moon System
Every 27.3 days, the moon rotates once on its axis and revolves once around Earth.
So, the moon will spin once and take one trip around the Earth in the same number of days.
Because of this, the same side of the Moon is always facing the Earth.
Phases of the Moon
The various appearances of the moon due to its changing position.
As the moon revolves around the Earth, the amount of sunlight reflected toward Earth by the face of the moon changes!
Waxing
The sunlit part that can be seen from Earth appears to get larger.
The moon
gets bigger
from right to
left!
Waning
The sunlit part that can be seen from Earth appears to get smaller.
The moon
gets smaller
from right to
left!
Check for Understanding
Turn to a neighbor (front, side, back) and use pages 294-295 in your textbook to answer the two Check for Understanding questions found below your Cornell Notes from today:
(1) Why does the same side of the moon always face the Earth? (page 294)
(2) Looking at the diagram at the top of page 295, what phase comes in between the last quarter moon and the full moon? Why?

The Moon orbits the Earth in 27.3 days,
but it takes about 30 days to go from one
full Moon to the next. So, the lunar cycle completes a month
on Earth.

The third quarter phase of the moon is also commonly called the “Last Quarter”
