LONDON, 25 Feb—Using genetically modified fungi toinfect mosquitoes that harbour malaria parasites could bean effective way to control the spread of malaria, researchers said on Thursday.

Scientists from Britain and the United States insertedthe genes of human antibodies or scorpion toxins into afungus called Metarhizium anisopliae that infectsmosquitoes. They found that certain combinations ofthem were able to stop the development of malaria-causing parasites in the mosquitoes.

Writing in the journal Science, the researchers said theapproach could become an environmentally friendly wayof fighting malaria, and might also be used to controlother insect- or bug-borne diseases such as dengue feveror Lyme disease.

“Though applied here to combat malaria, ourtransgenic fungal approach is a very flexible one thatallows design and delivery of gene products targeted toalmost any disease-carrying arthropod,” said RaymondSt Leger, a professor of entomology at the University ofMaryland, who led the study.—Reuters

Study seeks to dispel stressmyth in IVF treatmentLONDON, 25 Feb—Women trying to get pregnant

via IVF or other assisted reproduction techniquesdo not reduce their chances of success if they areemotionally distressed, according to a large scaleanalysis published on Friday.

In a review of data covering more than 3,500women undergoing in vitro fertilization or otherfertility treatments, British researchers found nodifference in pregnancy success rates of womenwho were stressed and those who were not.

“These findings should reassure women thatemotional distress caused by fertility problems orother life events co-occurring with treatment willnot compromise their chance of becomingpregnant,” said Jacky Boivin of Cardiff University’sschool of psychology, who led the study.

Infertility is a worldwide problem that affects 9to 15 percent of the childbearing population, expertssay. More than half of those affected will seekmedical advice in the hope of eventually being ableto become a parent.

IVF involves fertilizing an egg with sperm in alab before implanting the embryo into a woman’swomb, and can cost a patient many thousands ofeuros or dollars.

In research published last month, fertilityspecialists said that in the United States and Britain,IVF is successful in about a third of women under35 years old, but in only five to 10 percent ofwomen over the age of 40.—Reuters

Hot flashes, night sweats tied to heart risksCHICAGO, 25 Feb—Women who have hot flashes and night

sweats at the start of menopause may be less likely to have aheart attack later in life, US researchers said on Thursday.

But women who develop these symptoms later in menopausemay have higher heart disease risks, the team reported in thejournal Menopause.

“Our study provides reassurance that the classic symptomsof early menopause, experienced by the majority of women atmid-life, are not a marker of an increased risk of heart attack orstroke in the future,” Dr JoAnn Manson of Brigham and Women’sHospital, who worked on the study, said in a statement. Thefindings come from a new analysis of the large clinical trialcalled the Women’s Health Initiative in 2002 that showedhormone replacement therapy raised the risk of breast andovarian cancers and strokes in older women, and doctors nowprescribe it sparingly.—Reuters

FDA grants meeting onAvastin for breast cancer

WASHINGTON, 25 Feb —The Food and DrugAdministration has granted Swiss drugmaker Roche afirst-of-a-kind public hearing to defend the effectivenessof its drug Avastin for treating breast cancer, justmonths after the agency ruled that the drug is ineffectivefor that use. Roche said Thursday it will make its caseat the two-day hearing in June for keeping the drugapproved for treating recurring breast cancer.

Avastin is the world’s best-selling cancer drug andis also approved for several types of colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer. Those uses have not beenquestioned by the FDA. In December, the FDA ruledthat recent studies failed to show that Avastinsignificantly extended or improved breast cancerpatients’ lives. The agency began proceedings torevoke the drug’s approval for treating breast cancer, but Roche took the rare step of challenging the decision.

Drug companies almost always follow FDArequests, and the meeting starting 28 June over the fateof Avastin will be the first of its kind.

“We believe Avastin is an important option forwomen with this disease and should remain an FDA-approved choice,” said Roche Chief Medical OfficerHal Barron, in a statement. A spokeswoman for thenon-profit Breast Cancer Action group said the meetingcould be productive if it leads to reforms in how theFDA reviews and approves cancer drugs. “But if thisis just going to be about Roche buying their way intothe FDA and putting profits before patients, then I thinkthis meeting is going to be highly questionable,” saidAngela Wall, communications manager for the SanFrancisco-based advocacy group.—Internet

Japan, the world’s 10th most populated country, saidits population stood at 128.05 million as of October 2010,up 0.2 percent from the previous census in 2005.

The figure marked the slowest population growthsince Japan began a census in 1920, said Keiko Nozaki,an official at the internal affairs ministry, which releasedthe once-in-five-years census data.

“The weak population growth was mainly due toJapan’s very low birthrates,” Nozaki said.

While the census showed marginal population growth,Japan’s population has continued to decline since 2007,the ministry said.

Like in other advanced countries, young Japanesepeople are waiting to get married and choosing to havefewer children because of careers and lifestyle choices.

Japan’s fertility rate — the average number of childrenborn to a woman over her lifetime — stood at 1.37 in 2008,one of the lowest in the world, the government said.

Mortgage co official admits $1.9bn fraudscheme

WASHINGTON, 25 Feb—The treasurer of a once-leading US private home lenderpleaded guilty Thursday in a $1.9 billion scheme to sell worthless loans thatsparked the country’s largest bank failure in 2009, the justice department said.

The scheme, which continued straight through the 2008-2009 collapse of theUS housing market, fed billions in home loans that either did not exist or that hadalready been sold to banks and investors, to raise cash for its business.

The duped customers included Colonial Bank, which collapsed spectacularlyin August 2009; government-backed home loan guarantor Freddie Mac; andOcala Funding, a Florida entity backed by Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas.

They also tried to push worthless assets on the government’s Troubled AssetRelief Programme, ironically designed to salvage the scandal-ridden home-loanindustry, the department said.—Internet

MADRID, 25 Feb— Twenty years ago if youasked someone to name three Spanish wines theywould almost certainly have replied “Sherry, Cavaand Rioja.” While those three are still probably themost popular Spanish wines backed up bygenerations of expertise and tradition, there arenow plenty of reasons to look at the new excitingwines that are being produced in the country.

Spain has a tradition of wine production datingback 3,000 years to the arrival of the Phoenicians.Techniques improved with the arrival of the Romansin the country.

Today Spain has more land dedicated to grapecultivation than any other country in Europe. Its1,200,000 hectares of vines means 35 percentmore land is dedicated to wine production than ineither Italy or France.

Yet the amount of wine being produced is noguarantee of quality; indeed some would argue it isthe opposite.
