Stressing  out  in  (DISC)  Style  

•  Different  behavioral  styles  find  different  situaVons  more  stressful  than  others.    

•  We  can  unknowingly  cause  stress  for  the  people  around  us.    

•  This  leads  to  miscommunicaVons,  conflicts,  and  workplace  issues  of  many  kinds.

•  Block  their  personal  goals.  •  Make  them  hit  the  brakes.  

•  Get  in  their  way,  move  slowly,  make  a  lot  of  small  talk.    

•  Take  advantage  of  them.    

•  Create  a  wall  of  bureaucracy!

•  Tell  them  to  “step  up  and  take  the  reins”.    •  Put  them  in  charge  of  a  team.    

•  Let  them  know  that  everyone  is  counVng  on  them  to  the  lead  the  way.

•  Dampen  their  opVmism  and  enthusiasm.    •  Frown  when  they  smile.    

•  Don’t  let  them  speak  up,  suppress  their  views  and  opinions.  

•  Don’t  let  them  show  any  emoVon,  not  even  to  gesture.    

•  Take  away  their  phone  and  their  workmates!

•  Ask  them  to  cheer  up  a  co-­‐worker.  •  Tell  them  to  plan  the  office  party.    

•  Give  them  a  big  bubbly  pep  talk.    

•  Put  them  in  a  project  that  demands  lots  of  team  interacVon.    

•  Ask  them  to  be  cheerleader  for  a  new  iniVaVve  among  the  staff.

•  Keep  changing  the  rules  and  processes.  •  Change  expected  results  of  rouVne  acVons.  •  QuesVon  their  loyalty.    •  Don’t  prioriVze.    •  Don’t  be  available  for  clarificaVons.    •  Rush  them.    

•  Give  them  way  too  much  to  do  by  day’s  end,  then  threaten  their  job!

•  Force  them  to  work  a  highly  repeVVve  task.  •  Ask  them  to  work  a  rigid  checklist  of  acVvity.  

•  Make  them  wait  for  extended  periods.  

•  Demand  mulVple  layers  of  process  and  approval  for  very  acVon.

•  Deny  them  Vme  -­‐  CriVcize  their  work.    •  Rush  them,  send  them  to  useless.  

•  Force  them  into  snap  decisions.    

•  Give  them  insufficient  informaVon.  

•  Give  them  lousy  equipment,  don’t  upgrade.    

•  Force  them  to  release  projects  before  checking  and  tesVng  -­‐  Don’t  let  them  finish  anything!

•  One  style  can  thrive  on  what  makes  another  style  cringe.

•  The  Golden  Rule:  “Treat  others  how  you  would  want  to  be  treated”  

•  The  PlaVnum  Rule:  “Treat  others  as  they  would  want  to  be  treated”  Know  their  DISC  behavior  and  yours  to  reduce  stress  in  the  workplace.
