The ProcessRodney Daniel Taylor II

The man made surroundings when designed and constructed well are works of art. Paintings and sculptures are designed by the artist and created by the artists. The artist sees the work as a whole through idea to completion and allows it to adapt through the process of making. The designer of a piece of architecture may see the piece in one light and the builder may see it in another. The process they partake in dictates how they see the project and how it is ultimately completed. My goal as a designer is to see the process as a whole though building as much as I can and striving to understand both the design process and the build process as completely as possible. Thus allowing me to design more completely so that when physically partaking in the build is not an option the design can still be as whole and beautiful as the most composed piece of artwork.

FEST2014

Moog Fest

Under the direction of Doug Hecker, our fourth year design- build studio worked with Moog Music Inc. to design and build a space for their music festival in Asheville, NC.

My personal roles were: Project Designer, prototyping team leader, materials researcher, structural designer, one of many coordinators, welder, carpenter, and a tailor (sewing the Tyvek material with a sewing machine).

Digital Cloud Connected to Everyone Literal Cloud to Connect Everyone

Moog Music Inc.: Founded by Bob Moog, who was an innovator of electronic music. The company provides quality handmade instruments that blend modern and retro sound.

Moog Fest: High energy, high volume, all electronic, different venues around Asheville, thousands of people.

Main Concept: With social media and the digital cloud, people do not interact physically as often. Therefore we will create a physical cloud where people can physically interact, rest between shows and share photos and stories from the shows.

Digital Cloud Connected to Everyone Literal Cloud to Connect Everyone

Reflective Mylar was the first material we considered because of its possibilities with light, but was shot down by the fire marshal. We added stools for people to rest between shows and shipping containers to support the clouds through tension cables and create more of a protected space.

Phase 1 renderingStools

Tyvek house wrap was the final material chosen for the clouds. The clouds themselves had an 8bit retro redesign. The containers were covered in a white wrap which gave an Apple/Macintosh feel. Charging stations were also added so people could recharge their phones.

A Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston (CAC.C) Studio V Project lead by David Pastre. We were tasked by the Halsley Museum to create an architectural work inspired by the artist Don Zanfagna.

This was a design-build project and group collaboration through its entirety. My roles were: project designer, fabrication methods designer, structural designer, fabrication coordinator, welder, lashing methods designer, and bamboo logger (with chain saws).

Don Zanfagna: Artist, visionary, humanitarian, innovative thinker, and futurist. He filled numerous sketch books with abstract ideas about the future of the self-sustaining home.

Zanfagna researched and studied how historic civilizations built their homes and how innovators from that time such as Buckminster Fuller were thinking of structures. Knowing this, we also studied these subjects as well as newer precedence and technologies.

We came to the conclusion that to design + build a zero or even negative energy structure in four months would be impossible; therefore, we decided to create a metaphor of Zanfagna’s ideas instead. We took bamboo: a free, local, and renewable resource, and molded it into the inspiration from his art work. We also set the site as the Fountain in Marion Square to act as an advertisement for the art exhibition.

We wanted to allow people to go into the dome and experience it and the fountain in a new way. So we created a bridge that went through the middle of the dome, which was supported by trusses and large arches modeled after Zanfagna’s work.

Scale ModelScale Model

We had to design and redesign the construction method to make the bamboo cooperate which caused the construction to take longer than expected. With the delay and some site complications, the dome never made it into the fountain.

Simpler Times Chapel

Fourth Year Individual Project under the direction of Robert Bruhns. The task was to design a small chapel on Clemson University’s campus. The instructions were that the chapel had to be non-denominational and had to create a sense of holiness without the use of religious symbols.

Inspiration:I looked to Clemson’s history, which was rich in agriculture and engineering, as inspiration.

Precedence:I then looked at Rural Studio for inspiration and found the Glass Chapel, the bottle wall smoke house and a few other projects that became my precedence.

To create a since of holiness I was going to try to transport the people back in time when the world spun a little slower by referencing the agricultural history and use natural light to give the space an angelic glow.

1st Lighting Sketch Model 2nd Lighting Sketch Model 3rd Lighting Sketch Model

The front façade was designed to take queues from old barns to begin the process of the people feeling like they are back in time. The South wall is a reference to the more recent engineering history in its construction and also acts as the main light gathering mechanism.

South Wall Section

Final Model: 1/8”=1’

The East concrete wall uses colored acrylic tubes to transfer morning light similarly to the way stain glass does. The concrete itself has a gradient that allows natural light from the south to bounce off of it while allowing the colored light from the acrylic to stand out.

The Chapel harnesses the beauty of the past while using modern elements to remind us to keep moving forward. The space will beautify the people that use it both externally and internally.

Manifesto

Through my time at Clemson University, I have learned to challenge typical building convention and to find new ways to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. Everything in this world has a hidden potential and/or inspiration that is not fully utilized, this opens up possibility for these pieces to fit together in a new and awe inspiring way.

Project: Manifesto Chair Fourth Year. Create your manifesto and build an apparatus on a thirty degree slope that is based on a famously designed chair.

Final Apparatus

Final Apparatus

Manifesto Chair:

The Aeron Chair: So complex and mechanical that it gives the impression that if you pulled the wrong lever you might fall out of it.

Quartz: A rock that has so much hidden potential. Thousands of years ago it was used to create tools such as arrow heads and today we still use it to make glass.

In the designing process, I took all the pieces of the Aeron chair and put them back together in a different way to hold the rock on a thirty degree slope.

I then substituted the chair parts and pieces for found objects. All objects act and move just like the original parts, and if you pull the wrong lever the rock will fall out.

Here at the bottom is an Adaptive component project. Like the Family Components, making it wasn’t very hard, but comparing it to the Family Component I found setting up the parameters to be twice as hard. I was able to successfully create this simple form to make a truss-like system for a roof.

While at Loebl, Schlossman, and Hackl I was able to grow my revit experience by Fixing Detail Drawings for a Science Research Lab at UIC.LSH is a Larger Firm based in Chicago.

Distant Future

OpportunitiesProfessional Experience

Within the past year, I have worked for three firms: Tim Brown Architecture in Chicago, IL, Loebl Schlossman and Hackl in Chicago, IL, and McMillan Pazdan Smith in Greenville, SC. Tim Brown Architecture is a one-man firm where I was a design consultant for half of summer 2014. The other half I spent as a BIM consultant at Loebl Scholssman and Hackl, which is a medium-sized firm. I then returned to South Carolina in August and began working for McMillan Pazdan Smith, a large firm, as an Intern Architect.

These are a few projects I have worked on that illustrate the process of creating architecture.

Wofford College Campus Plan:

On arriving at MPS, I was tasked with creating the drawing for the master plan for Wofford’s campus in Spartanburg, SC. I created the plan from the “rough sketch” done by John Jacques, which included the original thoughts on the plan. From there, I helped develop our understanding of the campus by creating a diagram to study the main “life arenas” on campus to understand its organization. This led us to the final campus master plan.

Pfeiffer Business School:

With the campus plan complete, Pfeiffer wanted to dive right into a new business school. I worked closely with Jeff Tiddy, the project architect, in creating and designing the programming plans for the building.

Drum Pad Teaching Area Tim Brown ARCH. Massing Studies Loebl Schlossman and Hackl Detail

Drum Pad:

My first professional solo plan design was a drum instructor’s room for Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville, SC. The interesting part of this project was that this was no ordinary instructor: this was for Paul Riddle, the drummer for the Marshall Tucker Band and recipient of twenty-two gold records. His requirements for the space were to have a private office with a desk and a 42” monitor, two 9” speakers, room behind the desk for a large plush chair, a place to display his twenty-two gold records, and enough room for five drum kits.

Porch Addition + Detail Drawings

While at TBA, I was able to begin designing massing options of a small mud room addition for a family of four. During this, I explained and answered questions about the design and its functionality.

While at LSH, I was their BIM consultant; I had the task of transferring an older project from CAD into Revit. This project was to be further developed after being set aside for many years.

MPS Greenville Storage Door

MPS approached me about designing a door for the storage area using their old freight elevator door that was leftover from the renovation. I began by looking at elevator doors and how they work.

Process:I worked alone mainly on the design with input and recommendations from Lisa Lanni. Me, my Dad, and Grandfather constructed the door mechanism using material from our cow pasture to keep the rustic look.

Delivery:I was tasked to get project finished in two weeks for the MPS open house. I still had to work my normal hours and worked 8 to 10 hours after work for those two weeks. It was finished the day before and overall I have received numerous complements and inquiries to do similar projects from MPS clients.

Modeled Study of Drawing

Though the process of designing a piece of architecture will stay with us forever, we must be careful not to be content with the same design process that worked well for a previous project. To challenge the way we think about the process of design is the only way to develop it, and the only way to develop as a designer. Therefore, we must be encouraged to find the hidden potential in every object, material, space, and the process of design itself.

Education and Awards- B. A - Architecture at Clemson University 2014- Received the CAC.C Award for Architectural Excellence - Minor: Agricultural Mechanization - Emphasis on community design-build-Made Presidents list two semesters and Deans List four semesters

The Award for Architectural Excellence is given to one student per semester that is studying at the Clemson Architecture Center in Charleston (CAC.C). It goes to the student that showed the best all-around Work ethic, Leadership skill, and Design Sense.

In Choosing Agricultural Mechanization as my Minor I was able to learn In-depth Building Craft and Theory behind Metal working (All four types of Welding, Brazing, and Blacksmithing). I also learned Hydraulic systems such as designing Fire Sprinkler Systems, and some of the program ARC GIS for land mapping.

Tim Brown Architecture, a Small Firm in Chicago. - Was able to measure existing site elements, draft as-built drawings in AutoCAD from the original blueprints and the onsite measurements for various projects. Designed and presented massing models to the Client for a small addition and attended meetings with various contractors to discuss methods of fixing a problem or deciding which contractor would do the job.

Loebl Schlossman and Hackl, a Medium firm in Chicago - learned how a larger firm works and how it is organized to allow it to run smoothly. Worked strictly in Revit on fixing and adjusting project detail drawings for a Medical Sciences building at the University of Illinois at Chicago which expanded my Revit knowledge.

McMillan Pazdan Smith, A very large firm in Greenville SC - The firm is broken up into studios allowing the lager firm to act simularly to a smaller firm. This allowed me to be more involved with the whole design process which ranged from meeting with clients to solo design task and everything in between.

Profesional Experience- Summer of 2014: Design Consultant for Tim Brown Architecture in Chicago- Late Summer of 2014: BIM Consultant for Loebl Schlossman and Hackl in Chicago- August 2014 to August 2015: Architecture Intern McMillan Pazdan Smith

Construction Experience- 2013 to Mid 2014: Carpenter, Roger Hall Construction, York SC- 2002 to Present: Co-run 4th Generation Family Cattle Farm

The Building Knowledge I have gained has been invaluable to me. The power of knowing what is in a wall and what it takes to build that wall and what tools and hardware are out there to be explored opens up the world for new and exciting innovations that are awe inspiring. This has Inspired me to explore ideas like kinetics, having the structure be the main architectural design, and the craftsmanship in every detail. It has also taught me to rethink every little thing to find its hidden potential and how to unleash it.
