This studio assignment involved designing a small residential duplex unit, with a space to run a small business. The assigned site was narrow, being only 7 meters wide, and the building had to be four storeys tall to accommodate the required program. The final design featured strong horizontal expression on the facades, open flow-through spaces on the interior, a double-height ceiling over the living room of each unit, and a small courtyard.

CHANG TALKS : CUMULOUS CANOPY INSTALLATION MAIN FLOOR PLAN (OPEN TO BELOW)

GEORGE VARI ENGINEERING BUILDINGRYERSON UNIVERSITY

FEBRUARY 2016

This project involved designing a decorative ceiling installation for a Chang School Talks event, held in the George Vari Engineering building on Ryerson campus. In a team with four other architectural science students, I helped to design, fabricate, and install the display. The display was comprised of units made of laser-cut transparent acrylic sheets, LEDs, and white balloons. The project was run out of the Ryerson Design Fabrication Zone, and was not part of any coursework.

This assignment involved creating a sculptural model that illustrated the concept of a dominant void. I chose to challenge myself with this assignment, and created the model out of white acrylic sheets, cut with a table saw, heat shaped to the appropriate angles, and held together with epoxy and bolts.

This assignment, from my engineering design course at the University of Guelph, involved making a 3D model replica of a complex machine using Solidworks. My group modeled a sewing machine, and the model shown here is one of the assemblies I created, as well as the original, for comparison.

For this assignment, I was tasked with designing a museum to display wood sculptures. I chose to clad most of the building’s interior and exterior in wood, and to compose the building of cube-shaped rooms of varying sizes, with floors and ceilings clad in different types of wood. The design featured large windows and skylights, as well as high ceilings, and plain white walls, so as not to distract from the sculptures. I chose to feature the work of Dempsey Bob, a Native American wood sculptor, in this project.

This building is a single-room writer’s studio designed for an assignment in my first semester of architectural science. The studio had to feature a space for writing, and for relaxation. The project was sited in Grange park in Toronto, so privacy was a major consideration. I used skylights in this project to let in more light, without sacrificing some of the writer’s privacy. The design also featured furniture fully integrated into the building’s form.

These are diagrams of a piping layout I put together during my work with WS Nicholls Industries. The project was for an energy storage plant on Toronto island. I had to interpret a piping and instrumentation diagram, and plan a full 3D piping layout, connecting the various machinery and accommodating everything into a small mechanical room.

APRIL 2015

This assignment involved designing a building to serve a skating rink in Trinity-Bellwoods park in Toronto. I chose to use large glulam beams and glass to span over the rink, creating a roof that let in light, while providing protection from water. The building featured spaces to watch hockey games on the rink, as well as changing rooms, and spaces that could be used to hold farmers markets or public events.

This costume of Fierce Deity Link, from the Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, is something I created completely from scratch. I sewed the tunic, hat, and boot covers, created the armour using foam, and cut, chiseled, and sanded the sword from solid pine wood.

This costume of Owain, from Fire Emblem: Awakening was sewn by meusing a heavily modified bathrobe pattern. The sword and charm were made out of poplar wood and MDF, and the shoulder armour was made from sheets of craft foam.

I created this costume of Sogeking from One piece completely from scratch. I used heat-shaped PVC pipe for the slingshot staff. The mask was modified from a cheap plastic mask, with additions made from craft foam covered in paper maché and gesso.
