FSSAI’s 3rd State Food Safety Index 2020-2021

• Union Minister Mansukh Laxmanbhai

Mandaviya, Ministry of Health and Family

Welfare (MoHFW) released the 3rd State

Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2020-21 by Food

Safety and Standards Authority of India.

• It measures the performance of

States/Union Territories (UTs) across five

parameters of food safety. Human

Resources and Institutional Data,

Compliance, Food Testing- Infrastructure

and Surveillance, Training and Capacity Building & Consumer Empowerment

• The Union Minister also released the results of a PAN-India survey that identified the presence of

industrially produced trans fatty acid content in six food categories. Samples of the same were collected

from 419 cities/districts across 34 States/UTs.

• Overall, only 84 samples, i.e. 1.34%, have more than 3% industrially produced trans fats from the total of

6245 samples.

• Launch of various innovative initiatives by FSSAI including the Eat Right Research Awards and Grants to

encourage and recognize high-quality research in food safety and nutrition in India.

• Release logo for Vegan Foods for easy identification and distinction from non-vegan foods.

• The minister also flagged off 19 Mobile Food Testing Vans (Food Safety on Wheels) taking the total

number of such mobile testing vans to 109.

• During the event, 24 food businesses signed a pledge on becoming ‘Plastic Waste Neutral’ by collecting,

processing and recycling of 100% post-consumer plastic waste.

• Larger States: Gujarat was the top ranking state, followed by Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

• Bihar ranked last (20th) in this list.

• Smaller States: Goa stood first followed by Meghalaya at 2nd and Manipur at 3rd .

• Mizoram stood last at 8th

• UTs: Jammu & Kashmir grabbed the top spot followed by Andaman & Nicobar Islands and New Delhi at

2nd and 3rd place respectively.

• Lakshadweep ranked 8th place at last .

India chairs the 6th BRICS YSF and BRICS tax authorities’ virtual meet

• India chairs the 6th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India,

China and South Africa) Young Scientist Forum (YSF) for

the year 2021.The event was hosted by the Department

of Science & Technology in collaboration with the

National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru. The

forum represented the four areas such as Health care,

Energy, Cyber and Innovations.

• Under the chairship of India, the tax authorities

of the BRICS countries held a virtual meeting with a

theme ‘Redefining the Business Processes of Tax Administration amidst challenges posed by Covid-19and

in the Digital Era’, to discuss the challenges faced by the tax administrations of the member countries in

the digital era and the Covid pandemic situation.

• Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj presided over the meeting.

• The 3rd edition of the Bilateral Maritime

Exercise between the Indian and Indonesian

navies named ‘Samudra Shakti 2021’ was

scheduled to be held, at Sunda Strait,

Indonesia

• Indian Naval Ship Shivalik and Kadmatt

arrived at Jakarta to participate

• Indian Navy’s long-range maritime

reconnaissance aircraft P8I also participated

in the exercise.

• The 1st edition of the exercise was held at the port of Surabaya, Indonesia in 2018 as a bilateral

India-Indonesia exercise and the 2nd edition was held in 2019 in the Bay of Bengal.

• 2021 Africa Food Prize was issued to a

Tropical Agriculture and International Institute of

Satyajit Tripathy Appointed as the CMD of the UIIC Ltd

• The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Satyajit Tripathy, as the new Chairman cum Managing Director of the United India Insurance Company Limited . He succeeds Girish Radhakrishanan, CMD of UIIC ltd who retired in June 2021.

• Satyajit Tripathy started his career with General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) as an agriculture specialist in 1988.

• ACC has approved the appointment of AG Thankappan as the new Chairman of Spices Board India.

• Spices Board India is a regulatory and export promotion agency of Indian spices under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

• The Comptroller and Auditor General of India,

Girish Chandra Murmu has been elected as the

chairman of the assembly of Asian Organization

of Supreme Audit Institutions for a period of

Cyrus Poncha Elected as VP of the Asian Squash Federation

• Dronacharya awardee and India’s National Coach(Squash), Cyrus Poncha, the Secretary-general of Squash Rackets Federation of India(SRFI) was elected as the Vice President of the Asian Squash Federation for a 4-year term.

• Cyrus Poncha is the 3rd Indian after N Ramachandran, former World Squash President, and Debendranath Sarangi, President of SRFI, to be elected as the Vice President of ASF.

• David Mui of Hong Kong was unanimously elected as the President of ASF for a 2nd term.

• The other VPs of ASF apart from Cyrus Poncha are Fayez Abdullah S. Al-Mutairi from Kuwait and Tae-sook
