Hey Seamonkeys :) I hope you guys are have a great summer. It's a great time to be productive, stay involved, and most importantly RELAX. If you guys are having problems finding service opportunities, please contact me and I will make sure to help you. Let me tell you, I am so excited to work with you this year. I went to ICON June 29th to July 3rd, and it was a great experience! I got to meet Key Clubbers from different parts of the world. I met Key Clubbers from Texas, Florida, and Barbados to name a few. I learned that our global campaign for children is the Eliminate Project. Kiwanis is partnered up with UNICEF for this initiative. We are aiming to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus, a disease that kills one baby every nine minutes. I want to work with you to help donate for this project. We should strive together to make a difference. We can make a difference together within our homes, schools, and communities. If you have any new ideas for service or fundraising projects, feel free to contact me. Bubbling with Service,

The 65th annual CNH district convention, or better known as DCON, was the best experience I have ever had as a Key Clubber. With the theme “It’s a BEE world,” we were able to look BEEyond our district and see things we do as a Key Clubbers to help others. One of these things being the support we give to project ELIMINATE to get rid of Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus. While also learning about things that go on in the world we also took part in electing our 2011-2012 district board. We had many candidates running for each district position but at the end we chose Erinn Wong as our District Governor, Andrew Liu as our District Secretary, Christopher Van as our District Treasurer, and Elijah Kang as our District Technology Editor. During our time there we also participated in workshops to better our knowledge in different aspects of Key Club. I personally attended the President/VP workshop hosted by our IP DGOV Diana Nguyen so that I could learn more about my position as president, the “Breaking the Ice!” workshop so that I could learn how to break the ice with members, the “How to Recruit & Retain Members” workshop and many more. Other than the serious aspects of DCON there were also the SUPER FUN aspects as well. While at DCON we all got to meet hundreds of Key Clubbers while representing our school as well as our division, we went ALL OUT. We got the opportunity to eat delicious food, do the “how do you feel” cheer a gazillion times, and play “ride my pony” which went on for a WHILE, and go to the GOVERNORS BALL which was CRAZY fun. Now Key Clubbers, for those of you that went know what I am talking about, but for those of you that didn’t go, don’t take my word and experience it yourself by coming to our 66th CNH DCON @ Santa Clara next year. Trust me, it will be an unforgettable experience for you too.

I honestly had an amazing time at OTC. During the treasurer workshop, they taught us ways to encourage students to join KEY Club, how to manage dues, how to pay our own dues online, and they even gave us some fundraising ideas. During the group workshop, we learned how to techniques on when public speaking. For example, speak loudly, don't talk to fast, and don't use the words "like" and/or "um". All the treasurers got emailed a copy of the power point they had presented to us at treasurer workshop. I have been looking through the power point making sure that I understand all the important jobs of treasurer is and how to make this a successful year.

Past Events…
Las Vegas’ first Key Leader weekend was at Camp Lee Canyon from May 20th-22nd. Key Leader is a camp sponsored by Kiwanis International, inviting any students from grades 8-12. Before getting into the details, I want to point out that it was a unique experience that created memories that I will cherish for life. I’m sure I speak for everyone who attended when I say that it inspired us all to step up to the plate and become leaders for our generation. I recommend anyone who is even remotely interested in becoming a leader to attend this camp whenever you have the chance. The afternoon we all arrived at the camp was a pretty chilly one. After checking in, we reunited with old friends and introduced ourselves to new ones. Once we gathered in the mess hall, all of the camp administrators and Key Leader supervisors introduced themselves to us and explained the rules and guidelines. Afterwards we ate our meal with haste; we rushed to our first leadership seminar. We had a brief discussion about what we’re going to expect to do this weekend. It was a lot to take in, but we were all excited for the upcoming days. Throughout the weekend, we got to learn more about each other and even ourselves. We discussed all of the traits and qualities Key Leaders should have. As I sat throughout the seminars and listened to every word said carefully, I used the knowledge I picked up to set a foundation for myself; a foundation to become a better person and to become a better leader. Some moments were fun, some were challenging, and some were even emotional, but the best part was that, we got through all of them together as Key Leaders. We had to think outside of the box, escape our comfort zone, and work together to become the people we are today. All of us who went to Key Leader that weekend became the closest of friends and we helped each other whenever we needed it. That camp helped shape us all into better leaders to help support our home, schools, and communities. I’ve made a lot of new friends and I can proudly say that I am a Key Leader. I’m glad I went to Key Leader weekend. I would gladly go back whenever I had the opportunity, and you should attend, too.

As she called the meeting to order, LTG Yuna Kim was greeted by her D28W seamonkeys for the last time. “A Seamonkey Story”, a play on Toy Story, was chosen as the theme for the April 2011 DCM held on April 26th at Clark High School. The evening was filled with laughs, seamonkey spirit, ice breakers, olive jokes, awards, and great food. There was even a performance by special guests J.R. Aquino and Erika David. Although the performance was great, the best part of the banquet was definitely Yuna’s speech. Everyone guessed it’d be sentimental and sweet, but Yuna blew me away with just how touching it was. She began by explaining that she didn’t write the speech until 2:00AM that morning – not out of procrastination, but because it was at 2:00AM that she finally realized it was “time to say goodbye”. It may have been time for Yuna to retire her title as D28W LTG, but she’ll forever be remembered for all the hard work she put into our division. As the beginning of his LTG term, Steven Kim adjourned the meeting.

May DCM The DCM held at Northwest CTA in May was pretty eventful. Our LTG Steven Kim, who was recently elected at the time, gave an introduction with updates and previous events in our division. After that, the presidents from each school gave their reports. Circle K from UNLV was in attendance with the Kiwanis Family Committee chair, Celine Diaz. They talked about bringing Circle K and Key Club closer together by participating in service event together. Then we learned about Lupus, an autoimmune disease, from Miss Ang. Everyone got together during the DCM to eat food catered by L&L Hawaiin Barbecue. I'm sure we can all agree that it was tasty, right? Before it was over we got to play the Rock-Paper-Scissors Train ice breaker. Overall, it was fun like all DCM's in my opinion. :D

FUNDRAISER FOR CANCER PATIENT WHEN: this Friday and Saturday (July 22nd and July 23rd) WHERE: Centenniel High School, 10200 Centennial Parkway TIME: 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM WHAT: Support Kassidy Merrit, a cancer patient, and her family "Kassidy's Yard/Bake sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Centenniel High School, 10200 Centennial Parkway. The event is to raise money for Kassidy Merritt, who has cancer. She is a softball player and a classical violinist who will be a junior at Centennial High School this fall. Her brain tumor is inoperable. The family hopes DNA therapy at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston will help, but insurance will not cover it.
