Personalized Learning: Flexible Learning Environments

So far in this series, we have looked at our “working de inition” of personalized learning andconsidered providing students with a competency-based progression. If we begin to work at thesethings without considering the physical environment of the classroom itself, we are setting up oursystem to fail. To address this component of a personalized learning system, we need to considerhow “student needs drive the design of the learning environment.” In this situation, we need to lookat all of the “operational elements” from how staff are utilized, how space and times are allocated, with the bottom line of how each can “respond and adapt to support students in achieving theirgoals.”

Operational Alignment: How might we deliver all of the learning experiences that our studentsneed, with the resourceswe have available? What lexibility is in the design to enable us torespond and adapt to changing student needs?

Staf ing&Roles:In what ways might we structure teacher and other educator roles to supportour instructionalvision? What lexibilityisneededtoenableourstaff torespondandadapttochanging needs?

Time Allocation: In what ways might we maximize the time each students spends pursuing his/her goals? How might our student and staff schedules respond and adapt to changing studentneeds?

Space Utilization: How can the design of the physical space support our instructional vision? Can we use spaces beyond our walls, and if so, how?

Grouping & Connections: How should we group students to enable the varied learningexperiences we hope to offer and modify to their changing needs? In what ways might wefacilitate personal connections among students, and between students and adults?

Reading 3D

Thank you to all of our K-3 teachers for their hard work in completing the Reading 3D MOY benchmarkassessments. We would also like to thank all of our literacy coaches and other teachers who assisted inthis process. As you analyze data and plan instruction, intervention and enrichment activities, please besure to let your literacy coach or any of us in Literacy Services know if you need any assistance.

As a reminder all K-2 students must be assessed by a teacher other than the teacher of record for EOY. Ifyou have students who you know will be apprehensive about being assessed by another teacher, you areencouraged to allow a teacher other than the teacher of record perform some of the progress monitoringbetween now and the EOY assessments. If you need any help setting up devices for alternate assessors, please let me know.
