Ms. Cubbage teaches 7th Grade Social Studies and is in

her first year at SWMS. She is a product of Onslow County

Schools; She attended Silverdale Elementary before

entering the Swansboro school system. She is a graduate

of UNCW where I with a degree in History. As a college

student, she was an AVID tutor and implements those

strategies in her classes. She enjoys the beach, music,

yoga, film photography, and collecting vinyl records.

Teacher of the Month—Ms. Cubbage

Mrs. Elberson serves as the Instructional

Technology Facilitator for Southwest Middle School.

This year is her 18th year in Education and has

previously taught in Randolph County for 6 years

and 2 1/2 years in Onslow County before becoming

an Instructional Technology Coach. She is originally

from Thomasville, NC and has two children, Alecia

and Devin. She is a graduate of High Point U., NC

A&T and is currently enrolled at ECU.

Teacher of the Year 2013-14—Mr. Walker

Mr. Walker was voted by the staff in June to

represent Southwest Middle School as

Teacher of the Year for the 2013-14 school

year. Mr. Walker serves as the Orchestra

Director for SWMS and Southwest High

School. A 2008 graduate of East Carolina

University, Mr. Walker is in his 6th year of

teaching Orchestra at Southwest Middle

School. Mr. Walker is passionate about

music education, and strives to promote a

tradition of excellence within the Southwest

Orchestras. Mr. Walker began his study of

violin in a 5th grade after school orchestra program, and began

private studies with Dr. Bernard McWilliams. After receiving the North

Carolina Teaching Fellows award and a generous scholarship from the

ECU School of Music, Mr. Walker began viola studies with Yoram

Youngerman and Melissa Reardon, and studied chamber music under

the direction of Ara Gregorian.

Mr. Walker recently had the honor of conducting the 2012 New

Hanover All County Honors Orchestra.

On Tuesday, October 1st, Southwest Middle School was recognized during the Good News Spotlight of the OCS Board Meeting. The school was recognized for being revalidated as a National AVID Demonstration School.
