Water Cycle Evaporation

LIQUID to GAS

Evaporates from: oceans, lakes, etc.

Condensation

GAS TO LIQUID

Water vapor rises high into atmosphere – cools down

Cooled vapor then turns back into liquid

Precipitation

LIQUID WATER FALLING BACK TO EARTH

Rain, snow, sleet, hail

Carbon and Oxygen Cycle Process by which carbon and oxygen are

recycled and linked

Carbon Cycle Producers take in CO2

Use carbon to make food

Consumers eat protein – take in carbon containing molecules

Consumers break down molecules to get energy –release CO2

Producers and consumers die – return carbon to soil!

Carbon and Oxygen Oxygen Cycle

Producers release oxygen as a result of photosynthesis

Organisms take in oxygen from air

Human Impact Burning oil – carbon dioxide goes into atmosphere

Clear forests for lumber, fuel, and farmland –carbon dioxide levels rise

Trees removed = fewer trees to produce oxygen

Burning trees or cutting trees to clear a forest

- Which is worse????

Carbon and Oxygen

Nitrogen Cycle Nitrogen moves from the air - to the soil – into

living things – back again to the air

Nitrogen Fixation Changing free nitrogen into a usable form

Most organisms cannot use until it is “fixed” (combined with other elements)

Return to Environment Decomposers break down complex compounds in animal

wastes and bodies of dead organisms

Decomposition returns simple nitrogen to soil

Eventually bacteria break down nitrogen completely

Bacteria release free nitrogen back into air!

Comic Strip Create a comic strip discussing 1 of the

cycles in this section.
