5. Research findings & achievements Developed techniques for restoration of mangroves in degraded coast and

demonstrated these techniques to work in the field along the south east coast - at Vellar estuary (35 hectares) and in Pondicherry (15 hectares).

These mangroves saved more than 1000 human lives during the tsunami of 25th December 2004. In this regard, a scientific paper has been published in an international journal and it is the first scientific report in the world to prove the tsunami-mitigating effect of mangrove forest.

His team has developed the techniques for development of high value products from the mangroves: (i) black tea; (ii) artificial honey, (iii) microbial enzymes, (iv) plastic degrading microbes, (v) agriculture fungicide, (vi) microbial bio-fertilizers, (vii) feed for prawns, (viii) mosquito repellents, (ix) lignins for controlling oral cancer; (x) polysaccharides for preventing the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes AIDS; and, (xi) rapid synthesis of silver nanoparticles.

He discovered a new plant species in the mangrove forest. This is the only endemic species of mangroves in India and it is named after his university as Rhizophora annamalayana Kathir. This paper finds place in the FAO list of mangroves.

6. Research Projects undertaken6.1.Completed projects as principal investigator:
