Duties included harvesting precise genetic stocks of wheat, barley and oats in a variety of field trials and glasshouse environments. Observing and recording phenotypes of crops that are held within the Germplasm Resourse Unit (GRU), along with filing requests for precise genetic stocks used within research.

Skills And InterestsCommunication Skills: coursework has included presentations and poster conferences that allowed me to gain skills in talking confidently in front of groups and conveying my point clearly.

Organisation Skills: University requires good time management, to easily organize you ideas and workload effectively to ensure deadlines are meet. During my time at university I have always completed my tasks on time to a good standard. My attendance while at university over 90% and I

have never missed a day of work while at the John Innes Centre.

Computer and Data Handling Skills: I am proficient at both Windows and IOS software, I have a working knowledge of Minitab 17 a data analyzing software. While at university my main way of handling data was via Excel, which I am now confident in using.

Training Skills: During my time at the JIC I haven been entrusted to train work experience students in tasks given to them. This means I am able to clearly instruct sometimes complex activities to others and ensure they adhere to them giving positive critic when needed.

Analytical Skills: My degree has taught me much in the way of understanding and interpreting information for myself, several key modules such as “Research Methods” which I learned about data analyzing and understanding how to read and write scientific papers and journals.

Working to protocols and Safety procedures: While working at the John Innes Centre I have been entrusted to work in some of the more secure areas of the research facility including Laboratories and Controlled environment rooms. These require a strict code of behavior and safety measures, in addition many of the tasks during my time there required the following of protocols to ensure genetic stocks or closed environments were not contaminated.

Finding solutions to challenges: There are always challenges that must overcome in the work place, I pride myself on my confidence and novel thinking to create solutions. During my time in the Atamcama desert there was a variety of issues that occurred due to the nature of fieldwork meaning the methodology of my project needed to be changed while minimizing the loss of daylight hours and maintaining the core question of my investigation.

Sports and Creativity: During my time at university I have been in both kayaking and snow sports societies. These have been a great way to enjoy new experiences and meet people. My time away from university I am a founder member of a local choir and have sung at weddings and other occasions, also gaining lead solo. In my spare time I find writing short narratives as a creative outlet outside of my studies.
