Welcome
We’ve run more courses than ever before in 2016 and you have been attending in your hundreds. It’s been great to see so many new faces and such enthusiasm from you all. We won’t be resting on our laurels though, and we’ve been working hard to develop a whole new programme of training well into 2017.
Our team has reduced in size this year with Donald Cameron retiring and Laura Sweeney moving into a permanent teaching position at GCU; both will be missed and we wish them well with their new endeavours. There will be new opportunities if you are interested in working with us, so look out for information in the next few months. Twitter and Facebook are good ways to keep up to date, but we will also send out alerts in our monthly newsletter.
“Lifestyle and the Eye” is one of our new programmes. We have developed training as diverse as mental health, occupational visual requirements and smoking. A mix of webinars, courses and events will enhance this exciting and relevant training.
We’ll still be running courses to support glaucoma referral this year with an additional focus on long-term management. We’re working with patients and the IGA, with plenty of interaction and discussion. Don’t forget that the glaucoma e-learning programmes are still available if you want some additional training.
There’s been more demand than ever for the Teach and Treat clinics so if you are considering attending please get in touch with your local clinic in plenty of time. The LOTT clinic in Edinburgh still has good availability.
As always the majority of our course bookings are through Portal. Places on some courses are limited but if demand is high we will run additional dates, so do put your name onto the waiting list if the course is full. Unfortunately, we have had a growing number of people failing to attend courses. Our terms and conditions allow us to charge for non-attendance and from this September we will be applying a fee if you have not cancelled your booked place a minimum of 48 hours before the event. Bookings must be cancelled via Portal.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the annual conference in Stirling in September. Otherwise please feel free to email any comments, suggestions or queries about the NES training as I’m always very keen to hear your feedback.
Dr Janet Pooley
Next year’s training courses focus on our patients

PAL NETWORK
The Peer Assisted Learning Network is continuing to grow across Scotland and there are a number of groups meeting 2-3 times a year to discuss issues, present cases and learn from each other’s experiences.
This is an interesting way to network, get feedback and support from colleagues and most importantly improve your knowledge to help your patients.
The PAL Network:
• Supports local peer discussion/review groups.
• Provides GOC approved cases to discuss.
• Provides trained facilitators to support each group and help manage CET applications with the GOC.
We are so pleased with the enthusiasm of the optometrists participating, here’s some of the feedback received this year!
If you are interested in joining or setting up your own group please register your interest here:http://goo.gl/forms/yFgLCiffx7
Or if you have any questions please email:[email protected]

PAL NETWORK
Here’s some of the feedback we’ve received in 2016:
OPTOMETRY 2016 COURSE BROCHURE | 15
Course organiser:Kathleen Galbraith
“ Initially felt nervous but learned a lot from others and also was able to contribute. Looking forward to next one!”
“ Being a relatively newly qualified optometrist, it can be daunting to give opinions at peer discussions. Having joined the PAL Network through NES not only provided me with CET points, it provided me with a place to learn and grow as a practitioner through in depth discussion with the more experienced peers within my group and to take away various management approaches to many situations.
”
“ Although qualified for 13 years, I was very nervous about attending PAL network because I didn’t know anyone else but I met with a small group of optometrists and facilitator and we all got along very well.
”
“ All in all a very pleasant but instructive evening.”

What does it involve?
Is this course for me?This course is designed for both optometrists and dispensing opticians – with any level of experience.

E-LEARNING
In 2015 NES Optometry worked closely with the RNIB and Scottish Autism. These charities were keen to consider how to engage more individuals with complex needs, such as autism and learning disability, with Optometry.
In support of this collaboration, NES Optometry now have several learning resources available:
• An e-learning resource “Simple steps for testing of individuals with complex needs”. The 2 modules utilise footage from the RNIB’s Bridge to Vision project. The first is beneficial for all practice staff to work through. The second is aimed at clinical testing, so ideal for Optometrists and DOs.
• Two recorded talks from experts in the field:o Dr Julie-Anne Little, Ulster University, discussing
“Effective eye testing for children with ASD”, and, o Dr David Simmons, Glasgow University, on the
topic of “Sensory Sensitivities & Vision in Autism”.
These resources are currently available through Portal.
Completing in-course exercises for 1 Interactive CET point; or just the MCQs for 1 CET point.
