2. TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AT DALHOUSIE
UNIVERSITY:
WITH STUDENTS:
The position(s) which I hold at Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine do not formally include any teaching
with undergraduate students. I have, however, been fortunate to be able to develop some student
teaching activities, as follows:
Undergraduate Medical Education
A brief description of activities is given below. Each activity, and the number of students has been
provided, according to the Vice-President’s request. Evaluations of teaching are provided as
appendices.
Curriculum prior to 1992. Community Health & Epidemiology (Med I): I contributed for two years
as a lecturer to Community Health and Epidemiology. This is in the area of “behavior of individuals
and communities related to health.” A second lecture on “The Periodic Health Examination” was
added. The full class of 84 students was involved.
Development & Behavior (Med III): For the years 1986-1990, I offered an eight-hour selective
experience in the area of patient education and counseling. Approximately fifteen students
participated in this experience each year. The selective addressed issues in adherence to medical
regimens, theories of health and illness behavior, and principles of teaching and learning. Students
worked in groups to prepare patient education projects. All content was addressed through small
group discussion. For the years 1987-1990, I also developed the entire selective offerings of eight
different experiences.
Case-oriented, Problem-solving (COPS) Curriculum. Orientation: I have participated each year as
a tutor for the Introduction to the COPS curriculum. I also make a presentation concerning the
curriculum to the incoming students.
Pharmacology (Med I): I have acted as a tutor in this first year, four-week course for 1992-1993 and
1993-1994. Group size each year is eight students.
Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology (Med I): I served as a tutor for four weeks of this unit for
1994-1996, and 1997-2002.
Human Sexuality (Meds I and III): I have acted as a facilitator for two one-day workshops. I have
also co-chaired the Planning Committee for these workshops, 1994-1995, 1995-1996. In each eight-
hour workshop, 180-200 students from Nursing and Medicine are involved.
Postgraduate Medical Education
Research Methodology for Residents. In 1990-1991, I was responsible for developing and
coordinating and teaching in our first course in Research Methodology for Residents. The course
- 74 -
consisted of a series of ten lectures, addressing aspects of research design, implementation and
analysis. A committee of members from a variety of resident programs developed a course to
incorporate clinical research experience. This program began in the fall of 1990. I participated as a
lecturer in that program. Approximately 12 students attended.
Preparing Residents as Teachers.
1. Elective in Medical Education for Residents – Lead and faculty member 2004- present.
In November, 2004, the Division of Medical Education pilot tested a new elective in
medical education for residents. To our knowledge this represents the first formal medical
education training for residents in Canada in the form of a month-long course.
Five residents-from the disciplines of gastroenterology, rheumatology, obstetrics and
gynecology, and pediatrics-completed the first offering of the new elective. The course
included a great deal of hands-on work, including shadowing COPS tutors and later co-
tutoring on their own. In addition to honing their teaching skills, the residents learned how
to better pursue lifelong learning throughout their own careers.
A formal evaluation shows the course was a resounding success. This course continues to
run yearly.
2. Resident Teaching Workshops.
A series of workshops have been developed to prepare residents as teachers, to be delivered in
1, 2 or 5 day sessions. These have been implemented in the Department of Pediatrics,
Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and the Division of Neurology.
WITH FACULTY:
As Director of the Medical Education Unit, I was involved in, and responsible for, faculty
development. Working with the Director of Faculty Development, I am involved in teaching in faculty
development workshops. I have participated in teaching in the workshops on Grantsmanship and
Development of Research Proposals, and in the Introduction to Medical Education.
In 1989-1990, we began an informal group to discuss Research in Medical Education. This group
meets regularly to discuss issues and to critique each other’s projects or ideas.
The Faculty Development Advisory Committee was formed in 2000, of which I am an active member.
This committee meets quarterly.
Teaching Dossier. I am involved in consultation with committees, individual faculty members, and
with others as necessary, in consultations concerning the preparation of teaching dossiers.
Consulting Activities. Requests to consult with individuals regarding teaching methods, evaluation
and research projects are received regularly.
- 75 -
As Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education since 1990, and since that time, as Director
of the Division of Medical Education, my involvement in teaching extended to the following faculty
activities:
Working with departments to explain the new curriculum, and to assist in the development of
units, which are consistent with the new curriculum educational principles.
Serving as the Unit Liaison with the Pharmacology, Metabolism and Function, Pathology,
Immunology and Microbiology, and Genitourinary, Gastrointestinal and Musculoskeletal
units. In this role, I attend all committee meetings, assist in course planning, implementation,
evaluation and preparation of faculty. I have held these responsibilities for six years, beginning
in 1991. Since 1997, I continue as the liaison for two units, and with two clerkship
committees.
Contributing to tutor training workshops. This involves acting as a group leader for about 1.5
days, about once a year.
Participation in the peer-observation tutor network. This is a voluntary support network where all
new tutors, or any other tutor who requests it, is observed by a faculty colleague during a two-hour
tutorial. I have participated each year since 1993, and observe two to three times yearly. Following
observation, informal feedback is provided. In the first two years of the curriculum, I participated as
part of the team that evaluated 66-80 new tutors each year.
Involvement with Evaluation and Examinations
My involvement with evaluation and examination involves all aspects of the process. At the level of a
tutor, I am responsible for evaluation of the tutorial performance of the students in my group. At the
unit level, I am responsible for assisting with development of appropriate evaluation of student
performance. At the year and overall curriculum level, I held responsibility for the development of
overall faculty evaluation policies, approval of evaluation plans, and ratification and recording of all
recommendations regarding student promotion. I am responsible through the dean, to the Faculty. I
am also involved with program evaluation of the undergraduate curriculum. I was director for
program evaluation of the revised clinical clerkship, which underwent significant change in 1999.
Research Related to Medical Education
Please refer to the publications and presentations section of my curriculum vitae.
Educational Innovation
- 76 -
I have been involved, both as the Associate Dean since 1990, and as Director of the Division of
Medical Education, in leading and facilitating the development of a totally revised undergraduate
curriculum. The curriculum change involved a total re-orientation of our program to a student-
centered, self-directed, problem-based curriculum for the first two years. The process is described in
detail in many publications in the medical education literature. Every unit in those years was planned
and designed, and problem cases to stimulate learning (about 70 in all) were prepared. The change
involved preparation of both students and faculty for the new approach to learning. Some 200 faculty
were trained as tutors.
In addition, the clinical experience was also completely renewed. We were very pleased to receive a
full seven-year accreditation based on our new curriculum, from the Liaison Committee on Medical
Education, the accrediting body for North American Medical Schools. The entire report is available,
should anyone require it.
Creation of a Faculty Development Teaching Improvement Institute. This Institute, which is be
held annually, provides an intensive week-long experience, involving various learning activities, for
Faculty of Medicine faculty and faculty from other Universities.
Development of the Division of Medical Education Symposium. This day-long annual Symposium
was developed in 2000, to allow Faculty members the opportunity to present and exchange their work
in medical education.
Development of the one month Resident Elective in Medical Education. (Please see above)
