Government forms panel to upgrade norms for state, district level economicdata collection:
The government has set up a 13-member committee to upgrade the norms for
computation of economic data at states and districts level in the backdrop of plans to
revise the base year for National Accounts or GDP calculation.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) will change the base
year to 2017-18 for the calculation of GDP and IIP numbers from the current 2011-12
with an aim to capture changes in the economy.
The Committee for Sub-National Accounts will be headed by Ravindra H Dholakia, a
retired professor of IIM Ahmedabad.
Tax department launches ‘instant’ PAN card service:
The Income Tax Department has launched an ‘instant’ Aadhaar-based PAN allotment
service for individuals seeking the unique identity for the first time.
“This facility is free of cost and instant allotment of e-PAN is available for a limited period
on a first-come, first-served basis for valid Aadhaar holders,”
Aadhaar, PAN Linking Deadline Extended To March 31 Next Year
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the time for linking PAN with
Aadhaar till 31 March 2019. This is the fifth time that the government has extended the
last date. The earlier deadlines for linking Aadhaar-PAN were July 31, August 31 and
December 31, 2017, March 31 and June 30 this year. India had launched Aadhaar, now
the world’s biggest biometric database, in 2009 to streamline welfare payments and
reduce wastage in public spending.

China conducts drill in Tibet 1st time since Doklam standoff
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted a drill in Tibet “to test their logistics
and armament support capabilities. This was reportedly the first drill carried out by China
in Tibet since the Doklam standoff with India last year. The drill was a move towards
enhancing military-civilian integration in the region.

Andhra mulls issuing bonds for Rs.42,000 crore to fund construction ofAmravati:
Realizing that the chances of securing assistance from the Centre are remote at this
point, the Andhra Pradesh government is examining the possibility of issuing bonds worth
Rs.42,000 crore for the construction of its capital city, Amravati. The State’s Capital
Region Development Authority (CRDA) officials are “working on the proposal,” according
to sources.

TNPCB issued closure notice to Sterling Biotech Limited
Sterling Biotech Limited, a pharmaceutical company, has been accused of defying
environment norms and discharging untreated effluent into the Pykara Dam and the
nearby reservoirs. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has served the notice
on manufacturing unit after it failed to meet the deadline to set up the treatment facility.

Sathyasri Sharmila from Tamil Nadu becomes First Transgender Lawyer ofIndia:
36 year-old Sathyasri Sharmila from Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil
Nadu has become the first transgender lawyer to enroll herself with the Bar Council of
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry (BCTNP). On a related note, Rajasthan’s Ganga Kumari was
appointed as the first transgender woman constable after Justice Dinesh Mehta issued
the order. Meanwhile, West Bengal’s Joyita Mondal was appointed the Lok Adalat judge of
Islampur in North Dinajpur district, thus giving India its first transgender judge.
Monti Rajkhowa, the First Assamese Woman To Scale Mount Kanchenjunga
Monti, who is professionally an executive engineer of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation
(ONGC) based in Mumbai, is the first lady ONGC officer among her male counterparts to
have managed to scale the world’s toughest peak. She was born and brought up in
Meghalaya. The ONGC Kanchenjunga expedition was flagged off by Union Minister
Dharmendra Pradhan in April 2018. Mount Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in
the world

Nissan signs MoU with Kerala government for digital hub
Nissan Motor signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of
Kerala to establish a new global center for its digital operations in India. The Nissan
Digital Hub in Kerala will serve as an important engine to drive Nissan’s global digital
transformation. The hub also seeks in transforming Nissan’s global business by placing
digital technology at its operations and service. For this project, the Kerala government
has provided 70 acres of land to Nissan to set up the digital hub at the Technocity
campus, Pallipuram.

Arunachal Pradesh govt plans to repeal anti conversion law
Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu said the law against conversions could
undermine secularism and is probably targeted towards Christians. The state passed the
Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act in 1978, becoming the third state in the
country after Odisha (1967) and Madhya Pradesh (1968) to do so. Anti-conversion law
was passed in 1978. The two main religions observed by people of Arunachal Pradesh are
Christianity and Buddhism.

Haryana Government is going to host 2018 World Union of WholesaleMarkets
Haryana will host 33rd World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Conference in
Gurugram from October 10-13 this year. Heads of 200 mandis from across the world will
participate in this Conference. Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board will organise
this conference. Countries from Asia, North and South America, Africa and Europe will

FPI outflows hits 10-year high at Rs48,000 cr:
Overseas investors have pulled out nearly Rs.48,000 crore from Indian capital markets in
the first six months of 2018, making it the steepest outflow in a decade, following high
crude oil prices and trade war worries.
Money in Swiss banks: India moves to 73rd place, UK remains on top
India has moved up 15 places to 73rd in terms of money parked by its citizens with
Swiss banks in 2017, while the UK remains on top. India had slipped to 88th place with a
44 per cent plunge in such funds during 2016, but the latest data from the Swiss
National Bank (SNB) shows an increase of over 50 per cent during 2017 to CHF 1.01
billion (about Rs 7,000 crore). Pakistan is now placed one place higher than India at
72nd position.
Govt notifies Electoral Bond Scheme 2018 via Gazette Notification
As per provisions of the Scheme, Electoral Bonds may be purchased by a person, who is
a citizen of India or incorporated or established in India. A person being an individual can
buy Electoral Bonds, either singly or jointly with other individuals. Only the Political
Parties registered under Section 29A of Representation of People Act, 1951 & which
secured not less than 1% of the votes polled in last General Election or the Legislative
Assembly of the State, shall be eligible to receive Electoral Bonds.
Electoral Bonds shall be encashed by an eligible Political Party only through a Bank
account with the Authorized Bank. Electoral Bonds shall be valid for fifteen calendar days
from the date of issue and no payment shall be made to any payee Political Party if the
Electoral Bond is deposited after expiry of the validity period. The Electoral Bond
deposited by an eligible Political Party in its account shall be credited on the same day.
India increases GEF grants to 15 million dollar from 12 million dollar
India will increase the money it pays to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for the
next four years to $15 million, from the $12 million currently. India has decided to
increase its commitments to the GEF’s new four-year investment cycle, known as GEF-7.
India is among the world’s most vulnerable countries to climate change. India is both a
donor and a recipient of grants from the GEF, which an international partnership of 183
countries.

India has set a target of achieving 40% of its total electricity generation non-fossil fuel
sources by 2030. Government of India’s target of installing 20 GW of solar power by
2022 was achieved four years of ahead of schedule in January, 2018 through solar parks
and India has set a fresh target of achieving 100 GW of solar power by 2022

IAS officer Alka Tiwari has been appointed Secretary, Central Vigilance Commission
(CVC), in a major reshuffle of Central government officials, an order from the Ministry of
Personnel said. Twenty officials have been appointed as Secretaries, Additional
Secretaries and Joint Secretaries in various departments.
Ravi Thapar to be the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Costa Rica
Shri Ravi Thapar, presently Ambassador of India to Panama, has been concurrently
accredited as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Costa Rica. He is an Indian
Foreign Service (IFS) officer of 1983 batch and expected to take up the assignment

Chennai airport could soon lose 4th busiest tag to Hyderabad
Chennai airport which is currently the fourth busiest in the country might soon lose its
position to Hyderabad. So far, Delhi stands first busiest in the country followed by
Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad in terms of passenger movement.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) shows that Hyderabad recorded 13.8
lakhs passengers, whereas Chennai recorded 13.5 lakhs users in April 2018. Between
April 2017 and April 2018, Hyderabad airport has seen an increase of 25% in the total
number of passengers traveled while Chennai has seen 13.7% growth.
