The United States Mint has created annual sets of uncirculated coins for collectors known as Mint sets since 1947. Packaged just for collectors; these popular sets provide collectors with one example of each coin issued for circulation in a complete set issued by the U.S. Mint.

Amidst a few interruptions and several changes in format, this popular collector offering continues into the present day.

Some sets are of particular note to collectors since they contain coins not issued for circulation. This includes the 1970 Mint Set, which includes the 1970-D Kennedy Half, and later sets issued in 1973 and 1981 that include dollar coins not issued for circulation. The 1996 Mint Set included the 1996-W Roosevelt Dime struck at the West Point Mint – a coin found only in the sets for the 50th anniversary of the coin series.

From 2005 to present, the United States Mint has used a special satin finish for coins included in the annual Mint Set. Along with particularly low mintage, this adds another unique aspect to the sets.

To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the American Eagle Silver Coin Program, the United States Mint released a limited-edition set of five one-ounce American Eagle Silver Coins. This special American Eagle Silver Five-Coin Set is an exquisite collection that captures the essence and beauty of these cherished coins – in stunning proof, reverse proof, uncirculated and bullion coins minted by the United States Mint facilities at West Point, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

The reverse proof and the San Francisco coins are unique to the set, and with a mintage of 100,000, they are the second-lowest mintage Silver Eagle coins ever produced after the 1995 (W) Proof-only Silver Eagle. The 20th Anniversary American Silver Eagle Set was released by the United States Mint in 2006 to celebrate twenty years of the American Eagle Coin Program. The set includes three different collectible Eagles, and two of these coins represent brand new (at the time) finishes for the series.

The W-Mint Uncirculated Eagle made its debut in this set, struck from a specially burnished blank and carrying a West Point ‘W’ mintmark. Joining the uncirculated coin is a standard 2006-W Proof American Silver Eagle. This coin also includes the ‘W’ mintmark on the reverse.

But most importantly, the set also includes a unique 2006 P-Mint Reverse Proof coin. As implied by the name, this coin was minted at the Philadelphia Mint and the appearance of the design elements of the coin are opposite of a standard proof strike – the raised elements feature a mirror-like appearance while the background has a frosted effect.

Peace DollarsThe first and only U.S. coin to display the word “PEACE”, the Peace Dollar was introduced in 1921 as the successor to the popular Morgan Dollar series. The new design was created to commemorate the restoration of peace following the conclusion of World War I – “the war to end all wars”. A rendering of Liberty is on the obverse, while the reverse shows a bald eagle in front of sun rays. These were the last large silver dollars minted for circulation and production ceased after 1935.

a. Peace DollarsThe Peace Dollar was first minted in 1921 to commemorate the end of World War I and the peace that followed. It was the successor to the popular Morgan Dollar. Peace Dollars were last minted in 1935, and at the height of the Great Depression, millions of these coins were melted for their silver content. This is a rare chance to own 10 examples of the only coin to display the word “PEACE”.

d. Kennedy Half DollarsThe Kennedy half dollar, first minted in 1964, is the only fifty cent coin issued by the United States Mint. Intended as a memorial to the assassinated President John F. Kennedy, it was authorized by Congress just over a month after his death. Despite the fact that these coins are still being struck, their circulation is extremely limited.

e. Standing Liberty QuartersThese coins were struck by the U.S. Mint from 1916 to 1930 in .900 silver. The original design of the coin was the subject of some controversy. The design was modified in 1917 to cover Liberty’s exposed breast, and the reverse received a new arrangement of the stars, with the eagle moved higher. In 1925 the design was altered again when a depression was made in the pedestal on which Liberty stands and that bears the date.

a. Barber DimesBarber or Liberty Head dimes were minted between 1892 and 1916 and are composed of .900 silver. They were designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the Mint, who also designed the twenty-five- and fifty-cent pieces. His initial B is at the end of the neck of the image of Liberty on the obverse. The dime featured a wreath of American agricultural products with the words “ONE DIME” in the center.

b. Mercury DimesAlthough this coin is commonly called the “Mercury” dime, it is in fact the Winged Liberty Head dime and the figure on the obverse is a representation of Liberty. These coins have not been produced in over 60 years, and are harder to find with each passing day! Minted between 1916 and 1945, the wings crowning her cap are intended to symbolize the liberty of thought.

c. Roosevelt DimesFollowing his death in 1945, the dime was chosen to honor Franklin D Roosevelt. The dime honored Roosevelt partly due to his efforts in the founding of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (later renamed the March of Dimes) and through 1964 the dimes were struck in .900 silver.

d. Buffalo NickelsAlso known as the “Indian head” nickel, this coin is a copper nickel five cent piece struck by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938. It was designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser. The image on the obverse of the coin is actually a composite of several Native Americans, and the bison on the reverse of the coin is rumored to have been modeled after Black Diamond, a resident of the Central Park Zoo in the early 1900’s.

This temporarily changed the way coins were minted and in 1943, the penny was made out of steel rather than copper.
