Development of the world’s backgroundInitial Background:

● An egg that fell on the floor, broke and a world grew out of it.

Development of the Background:

● A crystal egg spinning in space, unstable core caused the top half of the egg to explode, molten crystal warps and forms curved crystal spires around the core.

Background Now:

● An egg encased in crystal floating in space, a war inside, caused by an object being stolen and blame being pinned on both sides, caused the egg to crack and separate as the top floated off into space.

Development of the worldCharacter Interactions with the world:

● Initially there was a character that ventured out into the unknown world.

Our Direction:

● We changed this quite a bit, we made the world a lot darker, making both forest and yolk

creatures engage in war over a desired object which mysteriously went missing. Accusations

and hatred caused a war to break out.

● Crystal cracked and seperated the two sections.

Game Research

We decided it would be a good idea to research some of the history and meanings behind games such as cards and chess in order to help us come up with a finalised idea for our project.

Page 11: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

History of Chess and CardsChess

● Roughly 1,500 years old● Originated from India before

the 6th century AD● Romantic Era of Chess Rules● Characterized by

swashbuckling attacks, clever combination, brash piece sacrifices and dynamic games.

● Based on war tactics

Cards

● Originated from China and the earliest mention of it was in the 9th century during the Tang dynasty (618 – 907) and was referred to as the leaf game.

● Requires tactic attacks, clever combination and dynamic games

What these Games Have in

Common:

● Tactic (loosely based on war)

● Clever Combination ● Quick Reactions ● References to Social

Class ● Puzzles

Page 12: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

The Game - Initial IDeas● None of the ideas really stuck apart from the board game.

● We had multiple ideas for the board game, including different cultures of the world like the

social ladder in the world and a snakes and ladders style game.

● In the end we decided to go in a different direction however we did take various aspects from

previous ideas we had for other games and included them in our final game.

Page 13: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

The Maze● This was our final idea.

● First it was a board game played by children, there would be shortcuts like snakes and ladders

and minigames like in mario.

● At the beginning of the maze idea we were going to make it a board game but after a while

we found it was too hard to keep the mystery and danger of the maze in a board game style

so we made it an actual physical object in the world.

● The game is for children only.

Page 14: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation
Page 15: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

The World’s Culture● The war was never forgotten by the forest or yolk creatures.

● Children were manipulated by their parents from a young age so they would never question

nor get curious about the world beyond the crystals.

● To make sure both sides remained separated, the parents of the children would teach them

old folk tales and paint the other culture as an enemy that should be feared.

● When entering puberty, each child must play the maze game which would be a rite of passage

into maturity.

● Maze game is an old tradition passed from one generation to the other.

● The maze is always finished with different outcomes for each child.

Page 19: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

The Maze● Progress through the maze by completing riddles, challenges and events set in the maze

similar to “Harry Potter”.

● The challenges and events are based on the true meaning behind children’s nursery rhymes.

● Characters in the world train for this their whole lives learning about five skills from which

they will specialise in two which can be used as perks in the game.

● Chosen characteristics are gained by a character through training and from parental guidance.

● There are 5 rules.

● The further the progress, the harder the challenges.

● To win the game, one must find the precious object in the middle of the maze and only then

will the child be released.

● It will not be possible for the child to die in the game but they will suffer trials and

temptations both physically and mentally.

Rules Of The Maze

1. Once entered you cannot leave, the maze must be complete.

2. The precious object that is gleaming, must be found for the maze to be completed.

3. Choose your characteristics wisely to complete the maze precisely.

4. Don’t get caught up in a riddle or a challenge ahead, proceed with caution and use your head.

5. Beware your senses they could be wrong, sometimes eyes lie - ears might see more.

Reasons for Nursery Rhymes and Riddles ● We wanted to use something familiar to our own childhood fears so we could relate, i.e

monster under the bed.

● In order to incorporate this child-like feel to our maze, we all agreed it would be good to use

nursery rhymes - but with a twist. We would research the true meanings behind nursery

rhymes and use their dark backgrounds to create a challenge.

● Riddles would focus on how the maze behaves due to your answer, i.e points you at which

direction to take. They’re less dangerous than nursery rhymes but if too many mistakes are

made, it could lead to harder challenges and loss of sanity.

Page 24: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

The Maze - ChallengesRing a Ring a Rosy Challenge Idea:

Character in the maze grabs hold of one of the fake precious items. This instantly dissolves in the characters hands.

This event triggers a challenge to happen:

The maze walls close together in a circle and begin to enclose the character. This circle begins slowing filling with a black mist. The character is presented with a riddle they must answer before the black mist surrounds them completely, which would result in loss of sanity.

Page 25: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

The Maze - Challenges

Sing a Song of Sixpence Challenge Ideas:

● Player comes across a huge feast they can’t resist, but when they touch the food, it transform into creatures that attack them.

● The player must work out a way to escape or answer a riddle to stop the creatures before they attack.

● The attack, if not escaped from, will take a toll on the character. The goal of the creatures is not to kill them but to mentally harm.

Page 26: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

Further Challenges● Floor is lava!

● Running to the exit before door closes

● Hopscotch

● Answer the riddle out loud

Page 27: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

Jowlie - Master Manipulator● Inspired by Uka-Uka ● First species to break lineage.● First creature to never participate in the

game.● Both yolk and forest creature qualities.● Challenges the player by manipulating

riddles, challenges and even the maze itself.

● Never appears in front of players to create paranoia.

● Players that possess the ‘Perception’ quality are immune to Jowlie.

The Maze - Cheating ConsequencesMary, Mary Quite Contrary

If player breaks the rules, they will start seeing bits of the poem all around them (on floor, dust, trees), once they read the last line they will arrive at Bloody Mary’s garden.

History of Nursery Rhyme

This rhyme is a reference to Bloody Mary. The garden refers to growing cemeteries, as she filled them with Protestants. Silver bells and cockleshells were instruments of torture and the maiden was a device used to behead people.

Page 29: Crystal Egg World Game Presentation

The Maze- Cheating ConsequencesThree Blind Mice

If the player broke the rules they would begin to lose their vision, eventually going blind as they hear the voice of Bloody Mary in their ear singing the Three Blind mice. Once she is done singing, she wishes them good luck and leaves them to wander the maze blind.

History of Nursery Rhyme

The vicious farmer's wife in this rhyme is believed to refer to Queen Mary I, the daughter of King Henry VIII. Mary, a staunch Catholic, was so well known for her persecution of Protestants that she was given the nickname "Bloody Mary." When three Protestant bishops were convicted of plotting against Mary, she had them burnt at the stake. However, it was mistakenly believed that she had them blinded and dismembered, as is inferred in the rhyme.
