ISSUE 2 NOVEMBER 2007 FREE
This month is Donate month here at theStudents Union. We are having a number of
events to celebrate and support five chosencharities. This year they are the Poppy Appeal,Children in Need, Cancer Research, Every Clickand Transplant UK. The events include a five aside football tournament and e vening events atcity campus, along with much more fun!
Whilst we want students to enjoythemselves at the events throughout themonth we are aiming to get as manystudents as possible to donate blood atthe Molineux on November 5th. We alsowant students to carry a donor card.
The shocking statistics reveal thataround 400 people die every yearwaiting for donors. In an attempt to
resolve this the Liberal Democrats arecurrently putting pressure on thegovernment to consider having an optout system. This would mean we wouldautomatically be eligible to have ourorgans donated and those against the
idea would have to declare that theirorgans are not used for donation.
According to BBC News Research hasshown that although 70% of the populationare willing to donate, only 15% of thepopulation have signed up to the NHS organdonor register.
This month we are aiming to educatestudents in an awareness campaign as towhy it is important to be a donor, especially those in minority groups or withrare blood types. Less than 1% ofregistered donors are black. The NHSbelieves this is a serious problem.
So within all this seriousness, we hopethat you will come along to our events thismonth, find out a bit more, perhapsdonate to some of our charities, or
perhaps donate your blood. It doesntmatter how you donate or what youdonate but dont put it off, do it now andyou could be saving lives.

FRESHERSWEEK
A time which some look forward to, some dread and
some dont know what to expect. Whatever your take
on the first week back at University there was certainly
plenty to keep you busy both day and night. Our
freshers fair proved not only popular with students but
our guests, along with the Express and Star,
complimented us on such a successful event.
Combined with the popularity of Just Jack and
Wheatus on top of our regular nights made for a
fantastic weeks entertainment. Some would say the
best ever!!! Congratulations to the Security Team who
won the Dodgeball tournament in the Give it a Go day.
