Shelton’s] ‘Hillbilly Bone’ to No. 1, it’s not important at all.” The session’s biggest fireworks came over the Performance Royalty/Tax issue, but it was left for the very end and thus was truncated. Dungan cited the other countries that don’t have a the structure – North Korea, Iran and Iraq – but an audience member pointed out that none of those countries have a viable commercial radio industry. “I know it’s a jolt and a bad time,” Dungan said. “And I understand the fear and the backlash. But

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaped My Life KDXY/Jonesboro, AR PD Christie Matthews discusses her most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Dolly Parton, Here You Come Again: Some of my earliest memories take me back to listening to Dolly on my parents’ eight-track stereo. Over the years I’ve been fascinated by her life. In my opinion, she is the Queen of Country.2. Michael Jackson, Thriller: As a kid of the

‘80s, MJ was everywhere. He was the most incredible entertainer ever.3. Garth Brooks, Memphis’ Pyramid, 1998: Still the most incredible concert I have ever experienced. I had the opportunity to meet Garth before that show, and just being in his presence, the energy he exudes and the passion he has for our business changed me forever. I still get chills when I think about that show.4. Garth Brooks, No Fences: This album was my college soundtrack. When I hear a song from this album, I stop and wish I could go back to Arkansas State University and have that much fun again.5. Trisha Yearwood, Real Live Woman: I had just turned 30 when this album came out, and every song seemed to say what I was feeling. It’s so good, I bought it three times! • An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Bob Dylan. • An album you played or listened to incessantly: Jamey Johnson’s That Lonesome Song and Miranda Lambert’s Revolution. I’m obsessed!• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Contemporary Christian artist Matthews West’s “Save A Place For Me.” I lost my mom a year ago and this song hits home.

Larry Wilson jumped right in. “Entercom,” he said, drawing laughs from the full session. Wilson, who is in a dispute over the departure of former Entercom and current Alpha executive Scott Mahalick, later explained, “We’ve got enough problems with royalty issues and everything else, and they sued me because they tried to enforce an indentured servant’s contract.” The Seminar-long refrain about musical variety led to a question about risk addressed to WUBL/Atlanta’s Scott Lindy. “Every station should have two or three, but there are 70 songs you could take a risk on at any given time, and you can’t take a risk on all of them,” he said. Speaking to the slowness of the singles chart, Dungan acknowledged the logic behind programmers asking labels to get better at letting go of singles that aren’t working. “Luke Bryan’s ‘Do I’ struggled coming out of the gate,” Dungan said, pointing out the conundrum. “It went on to be a massive record; the second biggest audience single of the year.” Addressing the importance of reaching No. 1, panelist Gretchen Wilson said, “I’d rather get into the top 5 and stay there for six or eight weeks. I’ve never looked at anyone [promoting my singles] and said, ‘My song has to get to No. 1.’” Warner Nashville’s John Esposito joked, “Other than getting [Blake

Longtime Gone Imagine going two solid months without sleeping in your own bed. Jimmy Wayne doesn’t have to. Since starting his 1,600-mile Meet Me Halfway walk to Phoenix on New Year’s Day, Wayne hadn’t been home once ... before this weekend. A date at the Grand Ole Opry Saturday (2/27) offered him a chance to take a break from his mission for homeless teens. The Grand Ole Opry presented Wayne a $250 check for MMH during his two-song set, which included single “Just Knowing You Love Me.” Keep up with Wayne on his journey west here.

First-Timers (continued from page 1) “It was just unbelievable to hear some of the comments from the recording industry, when the main focus of this event is to thank radio for the exposure that launches and extends artists’ careers. I wish I had a dollar for every time Country radio was thanked by all of the artists during the entire course of the event. “I was unimpressed by ‘The Gloves Are Off’ panel featuring Arbitron and Nielsen. It really wasn’t a discussion of ratings and rates, as billed. While many of us welcome a competitor to Arbitron, it really showed how much better Arbitron’s survey is compared to an eight-week Nielsen attempt. “I was really looking forward to the ‘Normal People: From the Mouths of the Consumer’ panel, but the group was not a representative sample based on how little radio they listened to and the disproportionate number of satellite radio listeners vs. the general population. Finally, all of the opportunities to hear music exceeded all of my expectations.”

Luke Bryan Spring Break 2: Hangover Edition (Capitol) Bryan’s three-song iTunes exclusive EP

features never-before released, self-penned tracks “Wild Weekend,” “Cold Beer Drinker” and “I’m Hungover.” Bryan’s first Spring Break release bowed this time last year.

Easton Corbin Easton Corbin (Mercury) Single “A Little More Country Than That”

leads Corbin’s debut. He co-wrote three of the album’s 11 songs with Mark D. Sanders and producer Carson Chamberlain during a trip to Colorado. Other writers on the project include Rory Feek, Don Poythress and Wynn Varble.

Danny Gokey My Best Days (19/RCA) Gokey draws his debut album’s title from first

single “My Best Days Are Ahead Of Me,” one of the collection’s 11 cuts. American Idol’s Kara DioGuardi co-wrote “I Still Believe” with Busbee. Marv Green, Jeffrey Steele, Wendell Mobley and David Lee Murphy also have co-writes. Mark Bright produced.

Point Of Grace No Changin’ Us (Word) Shelley Breen, Leigh Cappillino and Denise

Jones’ eighth studio album is their first Country-targeted release behind single “Come To Jesus.” The trio wrote one of the collection’s 11 tracks. Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift) produced. The group’s 150-page Cooking With Grace releases today as well.

Blake Shelton Hillbilly Bone (Warner Bros.) This “Six Pak” album is anchored by the single featuring Trace Adkins. Shelton embraced the shorter format as a way to get music to fans at a lower price while releasing new music more frequently. Lee Brice and Jerrod Niemann co-wrote “You’ll Always Be Beautiful”, and Shelton has credit on “Delilah.” Scott Hendricks produced.

KNIX/Phoenix PD Mark Medina, winner of this year’s CRB/Country Aircheck “New Face Of Country” award, said of his first CRS experience, “I had a blast! From some very insightful panels, to really great performances and awesome networking opportunities, it was a week well spent. It was great running into and hanging out with not only radio peers and reps, but also the artists that I’ve become friends with in the past year. The country music family is amazing, and it’s great to be part of it. “Highlights of the week include the Sony Boat Show, the New Faces show, seeing great friends again and just getting to hear lots of live new country music. It was also nice to have my feelings confirmed about rising stars Love And Theft, Chris Young, and Justin Moore. I will admit I spent more time with labels and artists than at actual CRS sanctioned functions, but the panels that I did go to were pretty good. Some of them strayed off topic, but all in all decent stuff. I couldn’t quite figure out why getting the New Faces ticket was so clunky, but it all worked out.”

Austin Powers: Broken Bow’s James Wesley makes the rounds with KASE/Austin’s Mac Daniels and Tracy Walker. Pictured (l-r) are BBR’s Dawn Ferris, Daniels, Wesley, Walker and BBR’s Lee Adams.

Commenting on specific panels, Medina noted, “The ‘real consumer’ panel brought some things to light, but not particularly new info. It’s the old ‘what they say’ vs. ‘what they actually do’ notion. For instance, it was interesting they all said they moved to satellite vs. local because they want more new music and radio can be up to two months behind. And yet, when names were thrown at them they couldn’t indentify current songs

by a number of young artists. Again, not revolutionary info, but noteworthy. And, there seemed to be lots of posturing at the Town Hall session.” Clear Channel/St. Louis OM Mark Anderson only had a day in Music City, but was impressed. “I was really moved by how positive and welcoming the event was to folks like me, who are new to Country. My mistake was not allowing myself more than 24 hours to enjoy, meet and learn. I can’t wait to come back next year.” Make your plans now for CRS 2011, set for March 2-4 in Nashville. CAC

Here’s a look at the January Arbitron PPM markets released last week. In a big rebound from a rough Holiday survey, gainers led decliners 44-7, with 11 unchanged. Among the highlights:

WYCD/Detroit soared from eighth to No. 1 – its first metro victory in PPM. WXTU/Philadelphia scored its best month in nearly two years, up 3.8-4.8. KWJJ/Portland scored its highest monthly and won the format battle for the first time. KFRG/Riverside earned its best cume in its 21 PPM sweeps and ranks No. 1 both 25-54 and among women 25-54. And KSOP-FM/Salt Lake City, KAJA/San Antonio and KWNR/Las Vegas posted their highest shares in five months of PPM. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator, a “t” indicates a tie and a “*” indicates a record high showing for the station in that particular category.
