CHAPTER 0: Working Across the Ether The Internet used to be called the Ethernet. Way back when, when I had a top-secret clearance and was working as a programmer at Lockheed. The “Ether” was the substance that the ancients believed comprised our atmosphere and had some kinds of magical properties.

It really is all that. It’s magical, and we transmit electrical signals over it now-a-days. We communicate with each other over vast arrays of time and space.

I have clients in Russia, in Greece, in New Zealand, and in South America. And in the United States. And even some in San Diego.

So, what is the protocol so that we can work together without you having to fly to Southern California and come to my office to meet with me in person?

CrossLoop and Skype I use two simple and free technologies to talk with my clients, no matter where I am and no matter where they are. Yes, there are lots of others, and it would be a waste of our time for me to explain why I ended up using this on over any others.

For connecting to your computer and viewing what you are doing, we both run CrossLoop, and I can view your screen, or whatever portion you allow me to see. It makes it easy to navigate around the programs we are using and let me catch your mistakes or misunderstandings by “gerfingerpointing.” I can move the mouse and show you what I want you to look at.

For talking to each other, or even seeing video of each other, while we are working on our project(s) I use Skype. My Skype phone number is (760) 444-4174 (or sunnyjharris), and calls back and forth across the world are free (except for a small monthly fee in my case.)

Connecting: If you’ll simply go to www.crossloop.com, you can download the free software that we use to view computer screens. Sometimes I will also want to show you something on my computer screen, and CrossLoop allows that too.

Below is the figure showing where to go to download the CrossLoop software.

The next figure shows the Download button that shows up after you click on the Download Link in Figure 0.1.

Just follow the instructions from there on and CrossLoop will tell you how to get set up.

Later, when we talk on the phone for one of our meetings, you will go to the Program Icon in the Windows Toolbar, and type in Crossloop to bring up the following screen:

Figure 0.3—Run CrossLoop

Select CrossLoop, and you’re off to the races.

When it comes time to Log In together

You will start-up CrossLoop as described above.

Then you will click on Skip, as shown in Figure 0.4, below.

Figure 0.4—Skip to go to the Free Version

After clicking Skip, you will come to a screen where you can either Share your screen with me, or I can give you an access code so you can see my screen.

Most often, you will be showing me your screen and I will be giving you lessons that way. So, click on the blackish tab that says Share.

Figure 0.5—Click on the Blackish Share Tab

When you click on the black Share tab, you will see the window in Figure 0.6. It will show you the name of your computer and the Access Code to give me permission to visualize your screen.

Don’t worry. You will see everything I do while I’m on your computer. I won’t be doing any secret stuff, or copying any proprietary files. All I’m interested in is helping you learn to trade.

Figure 0.6—Share showing Access Code

After getting this far, I will need you to read me the Access Code, slowly enough that I can type the numbers into my computer, but not so slowly that I go to sleep.

Having done this, your screen will appear on my computer. It’s usually fairly slow, so don’t go changing screens on me while the first one is still slowly revealing itself to me.

Now, we’re connected! Here’s where the fun begins!

Using TeamViewer Lately, I have taken to using TeamViewer, as it seems to be more efficient, faster, and easier for the client (you) to use. Here are the steps for using TeamViewer:

Step 1. Download the Program

Go to www.teamviewer.com and click on the green button labeled: “Start Full Version It’s Free!” It is highlighted below by a red arrow.

20

Step 2: Save the File

A small popup appears, allowing you to save the file in a folder.

Mine allows me to “Show in Folder.” In the folder (usually in your Downloads folder), the name of the downloaded file appears, like this:

21

Step 3: Run the File

Next you just need to double-click on the file name, as shown above. That will start running the program (.exe file).

A popup window asks your permission to Run the executable file, as above. Click on the Run button.

Step 4: Install

The next popup window asks to Install the program. Click on Install. See figure below.

22

The next popup box asks if TeamViewer can make changes to your computer. Please click on Yes. (I can’t get a screen capture of this box, for some reason.)

Step 5: Personal Use

Personal Use of TeamViewer is FREE. For Commercial or Business use, you will need to register and pay a fee.

We are using TeamViewer for Personal Use, so in the next popup window, please check

personal / non-commercial use

and then click Next.

See below.

Step 6: License

Next, you will need to read and agree to their License. Please read, then check both boxes, and then click Next.

24

Step 7: Use Later to Access This Computer?

Now, TeamViewer wants to know if you want to allow Incoming and Outgoing connections to your computer.

Please tell it No and then click Next.

Step 8: Remote Control

At this point, you are essentially done with the install process. I gave you very detailed steps, one by one. But, it really wasn’t a difficult process. Mostly a bunch of clicking Nexts.

The next popup window will show you two important numbers. This is the TeamViewer Remote Control window.

When you call me, or I call you, and we decide to connect by TeamViewer, you will simply RUN

TeamViewer from your Start Button in the lower left corner of your computer screen, and then give me the two numbers highlighted below.

First I will want the number highlighted as “1”, which is the ID of your computer. Next, I will want the number highlighted as “2”, which is the password for entry.

Once you give me those numbers, and I enter them into my computer, connection is nearly instantaneous!

I will be able to move the mouse around your screen and control TradeStation, in order to show you how things work.

I promise I will not peak into any private information on your computer, or misuse anything. I‘ve done this with hundreds of clients over the years.

As for audio connection, we will either use Skype [(760) 444-4174] (like in the CrossLoop examples above) or will use my cell phone, which is (760) 908-3070.
