Demystifying Delhi

DELHI - AS DIVERSE AS THE COUNTRY OF WHICH IT IS THE CAPITAL. THE LAND OF DILWALLAHS, AS IT IS POPULARLY KNOWN. AND UNARGUABLY ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE AND COSMOPOLITAN CITIES IN THE WORLD, OFFERING UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES FOR THE TRAVELLER WITH A TASTE FOR THE OLD, OR THE GYPSY WITH A NOD FOR THE CONTEMPORARY. AN EXCITING BLEND OF CULTURES & LIFESTYLES, OF TRADITIONS AND COMMERCE.

Let's embark, then, on a journey across the city:

In memoriam : India Gate

A grand memorial, dedicated to the memory of the 90,000 soldiers who laid down their lives during World War I, India Gate is one of Delhi's most recognizable monuments. Standing 42 m high, this architectural marvel has names of almost 13,500 soldiers engraved on its arch and foundations. The place not only serves as a picnic spot for visitors, but is also a profound symbol of gallantry and sacrifice. India Gate is also famous for the “Amar Jawan Jyoti” that burns under its arch and is known as the eternal flame. The foundation stone of India Gate was laid by His Royal Highness, the Duke of Connaught in 1921 and it was designed by Edwin Lutyens. The monument was dedicated to the nation 10 years later by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin. love with it!

Etched in silence: Lotus Temple

Situated at Kalkaji, the Lotus Temple is as much an architectural marvel as it is a symbol of faith, peace, purity and love. As one of the most visited monuments of Delhi, the Lotus Temple offers a blend of modernity – visible in its modernly engineered architectural design, and history – as a symbol of Hindu faith and religion. As a visitor, the first thing that strikes you, apart from its glorious marble exterior, is the silence and the tranquility that takes over your senses and makes you feel relaxed and at peace with yourself. The nine ponds that surround the temple give the whole view a surreal effect. The place is known for its spotlessly clean environment that allows believers to meditate in peace. The temple does not impose restrictions on any visitor and has been thrown open to people of all religions. Built in the shape of a lotus flower, it is the last of seven Major Bahai's temples built around the world. The architect Furiburz Sabha chose the lotus as the symbol common to Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Islam.

Remembering an era:

Lal Qila (Red Fort)

The proudly waving Indian tri color atop the Red Fort is perhaps an apt symbol of what the fort really is – a magnificent monument that enjoys the most prestigious place in the pantheons of Delhi's history. It is a monument that has stood firm, like an Old Guard, through hundreds of years and has seen the city evolve over various eras and generations. The red sandstone walls of the massive Red Fort (Lal Qila) rise 33-m above the clamour of Old Delhi as a reminder of the magnificent power and pomp of the Mughal emperors. Today, the Red Fort is not merely a stunning reminder of the great Mughal architecture and its grandeur, but also serves as a platform for political and national leaders to deliver important speeches to the people of India. A trip to Delhi is incomplete without a trip to the Red Fort, and while you are all engrossed in its rich history, you can also make a visit to the Meena Bazaar that is also a part of the Fort's charm!!

In reverence: Rajghat

This is the place where The Father of the Nation, Mahatama Gandhi, rests in peace. People around the world come here to pay their tributes and reflect on the sacrifice and courage shown by the great man in India's struggle against British oppression. Rajghat is basically a square platform made of black stone and has the famous last words of Mahatma Gandhi - “HEY RAM”- inscribed on it. If the serene and poignant surroundings don't leave you mesmerized then you're probably not there at all.

Standing tall - Qutub

Minar

Among the tallest and most famous towers in the world, the minaret is 234 feet high and the highest individual tower in the world. A great masterpiece of Mughal architecture, the tower is a huge attraction for people around the world and no trip to Delhi would be complete without a visit to this monumental structure. Qutab Minar has five distinct storeys, each marked by a projecting balcony, and tapers from a 15 m diameter at the base to just 2.5 m at the top. The Minar's beautiful exterior, covered with carvings and inscriptions makes one wonder at the amount of hard work, artistry and skill that went into the making of this architectural masterpiece. Its mystical enormity is sure to make you fall in love with it!

Etched in silence: Lotus Temple

A perfect blend of art and science, Delhi's historical Jantar Mantar is an observatory which was once used to forecast weather, measure time, calculate planetary positions and so on. Constructed in 1724, it is dominated by a huge sundial known as Samrat Yantra, meant to measure the time of the day accurate to within half a second and the declination of the sun and other heavenly bodies for those with a scientific mind, Jantar Mantar offers an opportunity to learn; for others it's a historical wonder, a place that amazes and an experience worth cherishing!

Old is Gold – Purana Qila (Old

Fort)

Purana Quila is the venue for the spectacular sound and light show held every evening. Roughly rectangular in shape, having a circuit of nearly two kilometers, it was once surrounded by a wide moat, connected to river Yamuna, which used to flow on the east of the fort. The thick ramparts crowned by merlons have three gateways provided with bastions on either side. Buddhism, Jainism and Islam.

Demystifying Delhi

For the love of animals: Delhi Zoo

If you are an animal lover, or if you just enjoy getting close to nature, or for that matter if you are looking for a nice picnic spot to enjoy with your family and friends, then Delhi Zoo might just be the place for you. Spread over 214 acres, the it is one of Asia's best and is home to almost 2,000 species of birds and animals as well as 200 different types of trees. Going to the Delhi Zoo is always an amazing experience as there's a lot to discover, explore, and most importantly wonderful memories to take back!

Symbol of democracy:

Sansad Bhavan

Sansad Bhavan, or Parliament House, is a purely befitting symbol of India's stature as the world's largest democracy. Situated on Parliament Street, its massive circular structure and huge round pillars, as well as its serene and quiet surroundings, provide it with a unique charm! Although getting inside the Parliament House is not easy as permits are required, one can always view it from the outside and enjoy this immense structure.

Divine experience: Akshardham Temple

Akshardham means the eternal, divine abode of the supreme God, the abode of eternal values and virtues of Akshar as defined in the Vedas and Upanishads where divine bhakti, purity and peace forever pervades. Inaugurated in the year 2005, the grand and majestic temple showcases India's culture, heritage, ancient architecture and spirituality in a divine and breathtaking piece of architectural brilliance. The major attractions of this huge temple, apart from its beauty, are its numerous exhibitions, sculptures and verdant gardens, to name a few.

The main monument, depicting ancient Indian "vaastu shastra" and architecture, is a marvel in pink sandstone and white marble. The whole monument rises on the shoulders of 148 huge elephants with an 11-feet tall panchdhatu statue of Swaminarayan presiding over the structure. The other attractions of the complex are three exhibition halls spaced around two huge ponds, where one is a venue for light-and-sound show. Another amazing presentation is "Sanskruti Vihar" with 12-minute boat ride experience of India's glorious heritage.

Delhi's heart:

Connaught Place

Not many would argue with the statement that Delhi's heart lies at the Connaught Place. Built in 1931, CP, as it is popularly known, is a magnificent blend of history and modernity and offers something or the other for all sections of the society. With offices, branded shops, restaurants, multiplexes, the Central Park and Palika Bazaar – Delhi's famous underground shopping complex – it is easily Delhi's most happening place! Evenings here are full of life as people from all across the city and even outsiders flock the place to have a nice time with their friends and families. So if you are in Delhi, you better be at CP…because that's where the real fun is.

Safdarjung Tomb

The mausoleum built with red sandstone and buff stone is faced with marble and stands squarely in the middle of a garden. There are two graves here, one of Safdarjung and the other presumably his wife's. The square central chamber of the mausoleum is surrounded by eight rooms, each of them, except the corner ones which are octagonal, being rectangular in shape. The garden itself is created in the Mughal Charbagh style. Inside there is the tomb, the courtyard and a mosque. On either side are beautiful pavilions known as "Moti Mahal" or the Pearl Palace.

Time for prayer: Birla

Mandir

Laxmi Narayan Temple, also known as Birla Mandir, is one of Delhi's major temples and a major tourist attraction. Built by the industrialist G.D. Birla in 1938, this beautiful temple is located to the west of Connaught Place. The temple is dedicated to Laxmi (the goddess of prosperity) and Narayana (the preserver). The temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi on the condition that people of all castes be allowed to enter the temple. The festival of 'Janmashtami' is celebrated with much fanfare and goodwill at this temple.

In another era: Lodhi Tomb

The old Lady Willington Park, now known as Lodhi Garden, is dotted with monuments of Sayyid and Lodhi Periods, which include tombs mosques, and bridge .The tombs of Muhammad Shah and Sikandar Lodhi are the good examples of octagonal tombs.Shish and Bara Gumbad are square tombs with imposing dome, turrets on corners and facades giving false impression of being double storeyed. It is a favourite point for early morning walkers from the posh south Delhi colonies.
