Let’s get startedClick to Choose a theme. You can always switch to a different theme later. Or click Skip at the bottom of the page.

Let’s find a domainEnter a unique domain name for your FREE Wordpress.com website.
If you enter (Yours will be unique):

Pick a planSkip the premium upgrades, they can always be added later.
Select the FREE plan

Create you accountEnter you email address
You will need access to this email to confirm your Wordpress.com account.
Choose a username
This will be your unique login name.
Choose a complex password!
Use a phrase, use Uppercase, Lowercase, Numbers, Symbols….

Success!Your website was created. You will need to open your email and confirm your account/blog creation by clicking on the link in the email.
Start customizing by selecting a Theme!

Search for a ThemeSearch for a theme or browse the directory.
In this demo we will use the “Monster” theme
Click Try and Customize

Try the ThemeBrowse the option and make any changes needed to the site theme
Click the Save & Activate button when done.

Visit the SiteCongrats you have just created a website!

Wordpress MenuHover over the My Sites in the top left corner of the window.
Your site menu will drop down.
To get to the Wordpress dashboard click

DashboardThe dashboard gives you access to all the site management features.
Browse the left side menu to become familiar with the location of each item/task.
You may want to bookmark this page in your browser to have easy access to update your website.

General SettingsSettings > General. Set your Timezone to Chicago

Reading SettingsSettings > Reading. Review all the options on this page and make changes to suit your needs.

Discussion SettingsSettings > Discussion. Review all the options on this page and make changes to suit your needs.

Sharing SettingsSettings > Sharing. Review all the options on this page and make changes to suit your needs. I would suggest unchecking the “Show Buttons > Post > Pages”. Also turn off “Wordpress Likes, Reblog, Comment Likes”.

Logging into Your WebsiteGo to Wordpress.com in your browser.

LoginTo login to Wordpress.com enter your email address or Wordpress Username and Password.

Wordpress ReaderOnce logged in the Wordpress Reader blue screen will appear. Click “My Sites” from the top menu.

Select the SiteSelect the site you wish to manage by clicking the Dashboard link of the appropriate site.

Create a Static HomepageIf you are creating a small informational website for your local and will not be posting a lot of news, a static homepage may work well for your website. Get started by creating a couple of pages.

Add New PageCreate a new page for your homepage. Pages > Add New. You can name it “Home”. Unselected items from Disscussion and Likes & Shares. Click the “Publish” button.

Add Another New PageCreate a “News” page. Pages > Add New. No Content is needed on this page. Click the “Publish” button.

Reading SettingsSettings > Reading. Change the “Front page displays” to “A static page” Then select the Front page: “Home” and for the Post page, select “News”. Click the save button at the bottom of the page.

Your New HomepageYou now have a nice clean slate to work with.

Widgets and SidebarsDifferent themes will have different sidebar options. The “Monster” theme has the option for a Right Sidebar. Widgets can be placed in the sidebars.

Add a WidgetFind and select the “Recent Post” widget. You will have the option to add it to the sidebars. Make a selection and click the “Add Widget” button.

Additional WidgetsMany widgets can be added to the sidebars. A “Search” widget, “Links” widget and “Text” Widget, Upcoming Events widget and RSS widget are popular options.

View Widgets on Your Site Widgets will take up space on you site and appear on every page. Don’t add too many.

Create a Contact Us PageAdd a new page called “Contact Us”.

Add a Contact FormClick the “Add a Contact From” button. The default form can be customized. You can remove fields by clicking the “-” minus button next to each field. You can also add new fields by click the “Add a new field” link. Click “Add from to post”.

Email NotificationsSelect the “Email notification” tab at the top of the form builder. By default when someone submits a form, it will be emailed to the Author for that particular page. You can change this and add additional emails here. Click Save.

Publish the Page
The form has been inserted into your page with a “shortcode”. Unselected items from Discussion and Likes & Shares. Click the “Publish” button.

View the Contact Us PageYour form was added and will display your information in the fields by default because you are logged into Wordpess. Try the form out!

PostPosts (News items) are entries listed in reverse chronological order on the Home page (default) or on the News page we created.

Add New PostGive the post a Title and add your content. Add a new category called “News” or other topic. Click the “Publish” button.

View PostYou can view the post you just published along with the Progress Sidebars. Click the “X” on that sidebar to finish.

Add DocumentYou can add a document such as a PDF, Word or Excel document to a page.

Add MediaClick the “Add Media” button. Click the “Select Files” button. Locate your file and click “Open” to upload to Wordpress.

Insert FileThe file you uploaded will be selected. On the sidebar you can changed the Title if needed. It will be the text of the hyperlink. Click the “Insert into post” button.

Publish PostThe link was added to the content area. Publish or Update your Post.

Add a VideoYou can add YouTube or Vimeo videos to your page or post.

Video URLYou must first have the address or URL of the video you would like to insert into you page. Select and copy the URL from the top of the browser.

Insert MediaClick the “Add Media” button. On the left sidbar select “Insert from URL”. Paste the URL of the video and click the “Insert into post” button.

ShortCodeThe video shortcode was added to the content area. Your post or page can now be published or updated.

Add ImageYou can add an Image or Picture to your page or post.

Add MediaClick the “Add Media” button. Click the “Select Files” button. Locate your file and click “Open” to upload to Wordpress.

Insert ImageThe file you uploaded will be selected. On the sidebar you can changed the Title if needed. Select the image size you want from the “Attachment Display Settings”. Click the “Insert into post” button.

Image InsertedYour image was inserted. Your post or page can now be published or updated.

LinksYou can create a list of link to other websites and display them in the sidebar with a Links widget.

Add LinkGive the new link a Name, add the web address (URL) and select or create a new category for your list of links.

Add Links WidgetAppearance > Widgets. Find the “Links” widget and add it to the Right Sidebar. Select the category of links that you would like to display. Save.

Create a Members Only PageAdd a new page and call it “Members Only”. In the “Publish” box, click the “Edit” link next to Visibility. Select Password Protect. Type in your super secret password for the page. Click “OK” You can now publish or update your page.
Wordpress gives you the option to password protect a page. This unique password would need to be shared with those that would need access to the page.

View Members OnlyWhen you view the page any content on the page will not be displayed until the password is entered.

Custom MenuAppearance > Menus. Enter a Menu Name called “Main Menu” This name will not be displayed.

Add Menu ItemsAdd your pages, links or categories to the menu.

NestingMenu items can be nested by dragging them under another item and to the right. Items can also be ordered by drag and drop. Click “Save Menu” when finished.

Manage LocationsThe current theme has two menu locations. Click the “Manage Locations” tab. Select “Main Menu” for the Primary Menu. Save Changes.

Invite New UsersUsers > Inivite New. Additional administrators and authors can be added to your site.

Send InvitationEnter Wordpress Usernames or Email addresses. Add “IEANEA” with the Role of “Administrator” if you would like any future assistance with your site. Send the Invitation.

Premium UpgradesWordpress offers several upgrades. These are yearly fees that will be need to be charged to a credit card. Suggested upgrades are the “Add a Domain” $18 and the “No Ads” $30.

Register a New Domain Name

Search for a DomainYou can search for an available domain name. Use a .ORG or .COM. If it is available click the “Register Now” button.

Domain DetailEnter you domain details. You may want to list the local association.

Privacy ProtectionAnother add on for you domain.

View the detailsThis again will be a yearly fee.

Select New DomainYou will need to change the Primary domain for your site. Select your new domain and click “Update Primary Domain”.
