As we struggle to learn all the aspects of registering online, uploading images, downloading information, etc., we also learn “patience” – (patience sometimes is not actually a word in our senior years so we must learn that too!) But we will carry on and hopefully get the hang of it! Won’t we? Our Society provides us with opportunities to experience the art world, improve our artistic skills, and make everlasting friendships. I welcome all new members to share this experience. Let’s all become friends and create wonderful things for the Spring Show, the Gallery Tour, the Loft Gallery and the Fall Show. This is a reminder to register online for the upcoming Spring Show (deadline March 24), and the Member Appreciation Dinner on September 30 (no charge – just come & enjoy!). Artists of the Society have a show at the DOW Centre, March 1 to April 7. There is still room for more in the spring workshops – sign up online. I hope that each member will show his or her support by participating and/or attending these events. A Gallery needs art! Every two months a new show is hung, and members are encouraged to contact [email protected] to enter. The new show is up in the Loft – have you had a look yet? Enthusiasm and inspiration comes to members who attend the Drop in Painting mornings! All Wednesdays and most Mondays during March, 9:30 to 12:30. Hope to see you there! I look forward to viewing the themed creations of “Doors and Windows” by the Art Challenge participants at the March meeting. I will be back for the March meeting, recharged, and ready to paint on… if not for the Spring Show, maybe for the Fall Show. Regards, Sonja Marinoske Art Society of Strathcona County

March 2018 NEWSLETTER President’s Message It is said “the more you share and the harder you work together, the more you can achieve.” This Society for many years now has had a good reputation for sharing, working hard, and achieving great results.

Thank you to Norma for handling the February Meeting while I sat in the sun! And to Joyce Boyer for all the great artwork in the Loft during February! And to Sue Borland for tolerating the renovations in the office! Members: Please stop at the Welcome Table on your way into meetings and sign in for the evening. This is important for the ASSC meeting attendance record and it may become important to you too if you are planning on showing your artwork at ASSC shows __________________ ASSC “Spring Fling” Art Show & Sale: April 13, 14, 15

March 24 is the deadline for entering your work in this upcoming show. Check the website for all details and the entry form. This year’s show will permit the entry of 1 piece of work listed as NFS, and 2 pieces of art that have been shown in a previous ASSC show – one of which can be entered into the main floor show, and one of which can be entered into a “Cash and Carry Marketplace”. For this show as always, you are required to have recorded 20 hours of volunteer time during the current and/or past year, and will have attended 3 general or committee meetings in 2017. A new member in 2018 may enter one piece of art without regard to volunteer hours or meeting attendance. You will be required to work shifts at the show as well – but don’t let any of that stop you because the Spring Show is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your artwork. Contact the Committee Chair, Margaret Klappstein, at [email protected]

Library Corner We’re into March already, and you may be thinking about the spring show and all manner of other venues to show your work. Perhaps you’ll in a creative lull, or you’re playfully mashing up various genres to develop your own medium. Your Art Society library has resources to help you, no matter where you are in your art journey. Here’s a recap of the different categories of resources in the library and what they cover. Come along at the next meeting – we’re open at 6 p.m. – and explore. Acrylics We’re growing this section quite rapidly; resources on realistic and

abstract painting as well as specialist subjects Art History We’ve recently edited this section to cover the main periods of art

history as well as significant artists. Business Learn how to market and sell your art. Colour / Composition

This section covers anything to do with the design elements of constructing art, regardless of the materials used.

Creative If you have artist’s block or want to think more creatively, check out the resources here.

Drawing Pen and ink, coloured pencil, and sketching; from cats to faces to doodling; this is such an eclectic section.

Encaustic A small but exciting section, covering mainly basic encaustic techniques but with some advanced instruction as well.

Miscellaneous A catchall section that includes: techniques that cover multiple mediums; subjects such as landscapes, light and botanical illustrations; shapes and edges; and abstract art. This is a section you must take the time to browse.

Mixed Media More than just collage (though we have resources about that), mixed media uses a wide variety of mediums in the creation of an art piece. You’ll find abstract art books here alongside flowers and wabi-sabi art.

Oil We have an extensive oil painting section for artists of all skill levels. Pastel This is a relatively small section (but we add to it every year) covering

mainly the basics of the medium. Photography The photography section has a few books that explain how to look and

see – that is, how to compose your artwork. Sculpture A very small section on the basics of pottery; useful for thinking in

3D. Watercolour By far the largest section in the library; includes all the Splash books

that each cover a different subject or technique. We’ll see you in March. The Library Committee _______________________________________________________________
