Bank Lending rates(As on 17th September 2012 ) Bank Rate : 9.00%

Bank rate is the rate at which RBI lends longterm loans to commercial banks.

Repo Rate : 8.00% Repo rate is the rate at which RBI provides

short term loans to commercial banks. In April 2012, repo rate was reduced to

8.00% from 8.50% Reverse Repo Rate : 7.00%

Reverse Repo Rate is the rate of interest RBIprovides to the commercial banks for keep-ing their excess fund with RBI.

In April 2012, reverse repo rate was reducedto 7.00% from 7.50%

Cash Reserve Ratio : 4.50% It is the amount the commercial banks must

keep as reserve with RBI. In March 2012 CRR was reduced to 4.75%

from 5.50% In September 2012 CRR was reduced to

4.50% from 4.75% Statutory Liquidity Ratio : 24%

SLR - It is the amount banks are required tomaintain as liquid assets in the form of gold,cash and approved securities.

SLR was reduced to 24% from 25% in De-cember 2010.

Prime Lending Rate (PLR) Prime Lending Rate is the interest rate

charged by banks to their most secure, trust-worthy customers on short term loans.PLRis also known as Benchmark Prime LendingRate (BPLR).

RBI replaced PLR with Base Rate with effectfrom 1 April 2011.PLR is only applicable toloans existed before this date.For all newloans applicable interest rate is base rate

Why PLR was replaced with Base Rate?To bring transparency in interestregime.Under PLR banks had the right to pro-vide their prime customers loan at a rate lower

than PLR.This practice has been stoppedwith the replacement.Under Base Rate nobank can lend below base rate

SBI Base Rate : 10% Base rate – The rate of interest used by com-

mercial banks as a basis for their lendingrates.Banks have the right to fix their BaseRate but they cannot lend below Base Rate.

10% is the base rate of SBI with effect from23-4-2012

Marginal Standing Facility: 9.00% Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) is a new

scheme announced by the Reserve Bank ofIndia (RBI) in its Monetary Policy (2011-12).It came into effect from 9th May 2011. MSFscheme is provided by RBI where the bankscan borrow overnight upto 1 per cent of theirnet demand and time liabilities (NDTL) i.e. 1per cent of the aggregate deposits and otherliabilities of the banks. The rate of interestfor the amount accessed through this facil-ity is fixed at 100 basis points (i.e. 1 per cent)above the repo rate for all scheduled com-mercial banks.

Nomura slashes India GDP growth projectionto 5.8% Nomura has lowered the country’s growth
