Are you enjoying this fall weather? Doesn’t it feel good? November is here and brings us close to this year’s end. How appropriate to begin giving thanks to God for the year. Most look forward to this time of year when the holiday season starts. Thanksgiving reminds us to stop and give thanks for all God has done and is doing for us. We here at Covenant Spotlight truly have much to be thankful for this year. God took us from conviction to inspiration and then vision to conception of this Christian magazine in a very short time. Though it comes with trials and growth pains, the joy of our Lord continually inspires us to seek Him and glorify Him for all He has done and is doing. In only fi ve short months since our fi rst edition came out, we are humbled by the interest that has continued to grow in what God’s hand has assembled in the pages of Covenant Spotlight. Interest is now even reaching outside the Acadiana area recently as far as Laurel, MS. A family who visited the Abbeville area wrote in and inquired as to whether they could receive the magazine by mail because they were so “touched by the content of the magazine, and truly impressed that a group of church leaders, lay Christians, and those who love the Lord would take the time and effort to publish such a magazine.” In another group of letters we received from Cottonport, LA, they are thankful for “the encouragement found in the pages of the

magazine.” God has truly built this magazine and continues to pull His body together in unity to produce a life-giving, encouraging and useful tool for His purposes. This month we welcome Joyce Meyer to our publication featuring her monthly syndicated column. When God gave Brandy, our daughter, the insight to reach out to Joyce Meyer Ministries and inquire if they would be interested in partnering with us, we must say it took the faith of a child to believe for these positive results. However, when God puts a vision together, He always knows what He’s doing. And when we are obedient and allow God to move in our lives, He always shows Himself strong and leaves us in awe of His wonders. Among the articles, we are shining the spotlight on local Christian businesses as well as ministries which are helping people in need, such as the FoodNet and Little Lambs Outreach, an outreach of InnerFaith Prison Ministry. Also, we are spotlighting various youth and adults who want to share their faith and share what God has done in them with others.In this issue, we hope to inspire the joy of giving the love of Jesus to all and sharing His blessings with those in need. Jesus will always be the reason we take such joy in helping our neighbors. We would like to thank all the pastors, ministers, leaders, advertisers and the body of Christ for taking part in making Covenant Spotlight all that God has called us to be and do – shine the light of Jesus. May God’s blessings rest upon each of you as you walk in the joy of the Lord.

One of the most contrasting scriptures in the entire Bible is found

in John 10:10 where Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” One could exhaustively and thoroughly study this passage and fi nd depths of understanding concerning the life Jesus brings to His children. This is certainly recommended and encouraged in order to see the glorious truth in both the life-giver and the life that He, Jesus, wants to give to all of us. From a less studious approach, however, many of us tend to experience less of the fullness of life intended by Jesus for us to enjoy this time of year. While the other nine or ten months of the year can be easier to enjoy the fullness of life found in Christ Jesus, there is something about these holiday months that can make it really challenging. Whether it’s the memory of losing someone really close, the memory of past regrets, or even the present reminder that your family unit isn’t as in order as everyone else’s seems to be, the truth is that the fullness of life Jesus wants to give us can be more diffi cult to experience in the holiday season. I have a tip to encourage your spirit this year. It’s not my invention or my original idea. God will have to take all the credit for this one! The tip is to remember what the holidays are all about.

It’s God’s idea because Jesus said in John 14:26 “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” It was God’s idea to send the Holy Spirit to remind us of the things we have already learned and to teach us new understandings of Him. In Deuteronomy 6, the Lord tells the Israelites that when they inherit the promise land and inherit houses fi lled with things they did not provide, wells they did not dig, vineyards and olive groves they did not plant, when they eat and are satisfi ed, NOT TO FORGET THE LORD, who brought them out of Egypt, the land of slavery. I’m confi dent that one of the purposes of the Holy Spirit is to remind us of the truths and promises of God. This holiday season, when the devil tries to steal, kill and destroy your joy, I encourage you

to remember the word of God. If you are broken in spirit as you remember a loved one that you lost, remember that 1 Thessalonians 4 tells us that we will see our loved ones that were in Christ on the day of His return. When you think of past regrets and the events in life that are not as pleasant to be reminded of, just remind yourself of 1 John 3:20. It says that when your heart condemns you, just know that God is greater than your heart. When you think about how your family isn’t quite in order like you believe it should be, just be reminded of scripture which tells us that in Christ Jesus, all things are made new. The bible tells us that in Christ, all things are possible. It also says that in Christ, all things hold together. What great hope and promise for your family! It is true that the devil wants to steal, kill and destroy every good thing concerning you, including your holiday season; however, He who lives in you is greater than he who is in the world. Insist on remembering the promise of God, in Christ, and from me to you and yours, happy Thanksgiving, merry Christmas, and happy New Year!

Made newRevamping more than furniture.

Adriana Carter likes to make

things new. It’s what she does when she endeavors to turn an aging, broken or neglected piece of furniture into something beautiful. It’s what God does, she knows, with the lives of his children. The woman at the helm of This & That Furniture is covered in fl ecks of paint when we meet at the site of the home she and her husband, Mark Carter, are building in Lafayette. She’s been working, hair in a ponytail, and she’s still beautiful. She’s been married for three years, which is about as long as she’s been revamping furniture. “I started doing it just for fun,” she said. The Venezuelan transplant quickly realized

people were eager to buy her pieces, and it all began with a mere $100. She spends most Saturday mornings at garage sales looking for great fi nds -- waking before 5 a.m. and home by lunchtime. She also works on pieces people already have to bring them new life. And while the furniture is amazing, running the gamut from glossy electric blue to subtle chalk paint, it’s the heart and vision for the future of the business that is the real beauty. As she explained her love for the work of furniture she admitted that it’s about much more than what we see as the end result. “It’s all about the back story, and I fall in love with each piece,” she revealed. And the back story for the business? Carter explained it can grow into a way for her to bring her mother and sister to the states. She could offer them a place to work and a

place of hope from the poverty of their home country where her mother makes about $200 annually. When Carter left Venezuela for Brazil all those years ago she believed God would send someone to witness to her mother and sister as she went to reach others in His name. He did. Both are born again believers. They are a family made new.

This is a great time of year for a few home updates - before family gatherings and cold weather. Most

likely the biggest eye sore on a home is a dried out, dull front door. Nothing is more beautiful as a newly stained door. It’s a dirty job, but the outcome is worth the first impression your home will leave on your holiday guests.

Restore your front door:1. Remove all hardware, i.e. door knob, dead bolt and weather stripping.2. Use an orbital sander to remove the old finish and damaged stained areas. Sand the panels first, cross sections next, and outer frame last. Always start with a lower grit (80), work your way through 120 grit, and finish with 220 grit. This will work out little swirl marks made by the rougher grits. 3. With a sanding sponge, sand the window

sashes. If you have fluted door trim, sand off all of the old finish and stain. Use a tack cloth to remove all saw dust off the door and trim.4. The next step is to restain door and trim. Again, start with the panels and windows, then

crossbeams, and last the outer frame and trim, always working with the grain of the wood. Clean the windows off with a little paint thinner on a lint free rag if needed. Allow the stain to dry for 8-12 hours. If the color is not rich enough, add one more coat of stain.5. The final step is to apply Spar Varnish (stirred, never shaken). Apply a light coat to your door using the same pattern as before and with the grain. Always check for drips. Allow to dry (usually takes 24 hours), sand, and wipe off dust with a tack cloth. If your door is getting evening sun or all day sun, it would be best to apply 3-5 coats.

CSpot Hot Tip: Once you’re done (painting or varnishing), allow the door to dry for at least a week before reinstalling the hardware and weather stripping.

The nice thing about the holidays with your family is that you usually have plenty of notice on who is going to be in town and coming by for a visit. You can tackle sections of your house at your leisure until every corner is tidy. However, it’s those “Surprise! I’m in town and thought I’d swing by for a quick catch-up” phone calls can instantly bring a sweat to your brow. Never fear! Here are a few quick-clean tips you need to know in order to make your humble abode presentable on the fl y. My grandmother has given me tons of useful housekeeping advice over the years. One of the things she said that has always stuck with me is that if your coffee table is clear, your dishes are done, and your bed is made that you are halfway to a clean house. Granny wouldn’t approve of the following advice (and please don’t judge me), but if

guests are 20 minutes out, toss the dishes in the dishwasher to get them out of sight, pull your sheets up over your bed and straighten your pillows, and organize your coffee table – even if that means putting a few item in a box in another room until your visitors leave. You’re halfway there! While you are in the living room, light a candle, take a few moments to wipe the dust from your television, and straighten your entertainment center. Most living rooms are arranged around the TV, and the last thing you want is to be visiting with your guests and looking at

a sloppy stack of DVDs. Take a few minutes to

give your bathroom the once-over. Make sure to wipe

down the countertops, sink and mirror. If you have

time, give the toilet a light scrub. Don’t forget

to put out a fresh hand towel!

Before your guests arrive, take a moment to breathe

and freshen yourself up. More than anything, don’t worry too

much about your house. If your friends or family are dropping by on short notice and your house isn’t perfect, they will overlook it for the chance to spend quality time fellowshipping.

In our home we do Christmas differently than most families. We have a tradition that started several years back after I realized a disturbing trend was happening. I noticed that our children’s lists were getting longer. We were buying more than we really wanted to and more than we could afford. It really stood out to me that the presents I had spent so much time picking out and then carefully wrapping were loved for a few weeks and then forgotten about or broken. Those presents added up to a large chunk of change. It was money that could have been used more wisely, so I set out to change this in our family. We decided to go with a three present plan. Jesus received three presents for Christmas (gold, frankincense and myrrh), and if it’s good enough for Him then it was good enough for us. We sat down with the kids and just talked with them about the meaning of the season and the reasoning behind our decision. While there was a small amount of rebellion that fi rst year, things have smoothed out. It was hard for me personally because as a parent I want to buy them so many things. However, I remind myself that not only am I being a good steward of the money God has blessed us with, but I am teaching my children self control and fi nancial responsibility by sticking to our decision. It was recently brought all home for me. One of my children said, “Mom, I know there are a lot of things I could ask for, but I don’t want you to waste your money on something I really won’t play with.” I love seeing the fruit of a good decision.

My family loves to do volunteer work. One of our favorite places to lend a hand is FoodNet - The Greater Acadiana Food Bank. They work with people to help them make ends meet, and their director has such a passion for the people of Acadiana. What I love the most is that I can take my kids along!

There are so many ways you can help out:

1. Volunteer. They make this is so easy to do. Volunteers are needed during regular business hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. If you have a large group, contact their office at 337-232-FOOD (3663) or email [email protected]. When we visit we sort food from the local collection bins, break down boxes, and pack boxes for needy families

2. Services. Do you have a talent that maybe you can donate a few hours? Whether it’s graphic design, construction or just a little office work, help is always needed.

3. Donate. Food or money is always appreciated! Some items that are needed are pastas, rice and vegetables in a can. You can drop them off at any of the local grocery stores that support FoodNet or at their warehouse (217 Surrey Street). If you’d like to make a monetary donation, you can do so at their offices or online at www.foodnetacadiana.org.

4. Talk about it. Word of mouth is powerful! Get the word out to everyone you know by volunteering and telling someone, taking a picture and posting it to social media, or even writing blog about your experience.

If you are planning to visit loved ones in a colder clime over the winter holidays, the following tips literally could be life-saving!

Vehicle Winterizing Tips1. Get the right kind of oil change. Use the right viscosity, or thickness, for your vehicle at this time of year.

2. Make sure you can see. When’s the last time you replaced your windshield wiper blades?

3. Give your battery and charging system a little TLC. Have your battery tested by a certifi ed technician.

4. Examine your belts and hoses. Make sure the belts and hoses get checked for wear and tear.

5. Check your tire pressure. Your tires must be properly infl ated to ensure you’ll have the best possible traction as you drive.

Over seven years ago, I was blessed to be hired as a project coordinator for a pilot project within Lafayette. It was to reduce alcohol use, accidents and injuries within Lafayette. As you can imagine, that was a huge task for me to undertake - but not for God. It was at that same time that I began sending out daily scripture verses and a few personal thoughts to my staff. My goal was to try and encourage them for the tasks at hand and the diffi cult road ahead. We entered uncharted territories with God as our lead and faith in our hearts. In only a few short years the coalition made changes, forged strong partnerships, and made our community an even better place to live. If it had not been for God and the hard work of so many committed people, we would have never succeeded! What started out as a few scriptures and thoughts to encourage my new staff had become a group of mass emails that went out to hundreds of people a day. It was not fancy, but it was true and real. It revealed my faults and my struggles, but, more importantly, it revealed my God’s great love and unending mercy. It was what God showed me each morning as I read His word in the brief moment of quiet in a household full of boys.

Two years ago God decided to change the path I was on and direct me in a different direction. Looking back, it is amazing to see the hand of God at work in my life. The people He allowed in my life, the relationships He built, and the skills and knowledge He provided were all coming together for His glory.

Through a push from my husband and a huge step of faith, www.OneMinuteMinistry.net was launched. God turned my quiet time with Him and the revelations I received into an opportunity to share the love of Jesus with those inside my circle of friends. Moreover, that same opportunity has now grown into something that reaches thousands of people a day. Through His goodness He opened doors that may have never been opened had it not been for the journey I traveled. Not one person, incident or obstacle along the way was for nothing. God paved the way for great things. Last year One Minute Ministry was blessed to host the National Day of Prayer in Lafayette under the beautiful oaks in the

Horse Farm. It was supported by City-Parish President Joey Durel, Jr., local pastors, priests, community members and more. A small group of committed individuals continue to meet monthly on the fi rst Thursday of each month inside the Lafayette Consolidated Government building to pray for our community and its leaders. In a few short weeks One Minute Ministry will host the fi rst 12 Days of Christmas in downtown Lafayette. A beautiful nativity scene will be surrounded by marvelous sounds of Christmas carols and songs of worship provided by local churches. 12 Days of Christmas will bring many people of faith together to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior each night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Parc Sans Souci. Local groups will be providing refreshments, and the event is free to the public! Bring your blankets, your lawn chairs and your families to celebrate the TRUE meaning of Christmas. Servant-Evangelism. I might have invented that phrase, but it is doubtful. Over the last seven weeks, I have routinely run into a 33-year-old self-proclaimed atheist. After one has awkwardly run into the same person repeatedly in Lafayette, it is inevitable that the stranger will eventually become a friend. So he and I have talked about what he does for a living and what I do. We are similar in age and background, except he is a devout atheist and I am a devout believer. We both love our community and want to serve it as best as we can. Part of what I do during my week is help come up with creative ways for people to serve in and around Acadiana. The morning of this writing, he asked me if there were any opportunities coming up where he could help serve. LOVEacadiana was started out of a church as its missions arm. While serving others locally and globally has happened, we have seen something else happen as well. We have seen people who LOVE Acadiana and want to serve in Acadiana but who have been turned off by the idea of church over the years. Once these people start working alongside loving, life-giving Christians, they begin to see the love of Christ in a way they might have missed otherwise. Whether it has been through programs, such as mentoring, adopt-a-school or foster care/adoption classes, or just one-time events like a Black Friday Blitz or Christmas Stores, we have seen a new type of successful evangelism happen. This is an experience where practically showing the love of Christ seems refreshingly genuine to both the community and to the one serving. We allow non-believers to serve with us locally and globally. This allows people not only to see the love of Christ but to also be a conduit of the love of Christ. Something happens to one’s soul when it is being used by the loving hands of

the Almighty. We try to help foster this undeniable intimate experience with the Creator by letting people serve alongside other believers.

I believe Jesus said it best when He said,

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind…and…Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40 NIV)

I did it all wrong for years. And I was miserable! I’m talking about my attitude and my stinkin’ thinkin’ that was focused on the thought “What about me?!” And it came out in my behavior: If I didn’t get my way all the time, I tried to control other people through my temper. I honestly didn’t know what my problem was until God spoke to my heart one day and said, “You’re selfish. You’ve studied My Word about spiritual warfare, prosperity, healing, having power and authority as a believer in Christ…but how much time have you studied about My love?” That was the beginning of discovering that I would never be happy and have peace until I learned to love like Jesus loves. One of the first messages God put on my heart to teach was titled “Tell Them I Love Them.” At first, I didn’t want to do it. I thought, People already know You love them, God. I want to teach a really powerful message…something they haven’t heard before. But God showed me that if people really knew He loved them and what that means, then they would live much differently than they do. When we know and experience God’s love, we can share it with others. Imagine what the world would be like if everyone who calls themselves a Christian would really love each other with His love. Think about it. There would be no gossip, no judgment or criticism, no exclusive attitudes that make others feel rejected, and people’s needs would be met much more than they are. Thankfully, Jesus gave us very real, practical examples of how we can love the way God loves us.

Loving Others “to the Highest Degree” John 13:1 says Jesus,“loved them to the last

and to the highest degree” (AMP). In the following verses, He demonstrates what it means to love others like this. And it shocked the disciples. In those days, there were servants who washed people’s feet when they came to visit. It’s likely they were considered the lowliest servants in the household. Now Jesus, the Son of God Himself, got up from supper, took the servant’s towel, and proceeded to wash the disciples’ feet. His message to them was to love one another by being a servant. Because God wants His love to flow through us and touch other people’s lives. Love is not just a feeling or a theory; it’s a decision we make and an action we take. It’s so important for us to study what the Bible teaches about God’s love so we can learn to love like Jesus. And we have to pray for God to help us learn how to walk in love—to be a servant who “washes feet” by helping others.

It’s All About Washing Others’ Feet Matthew 7:12 (NIV) says, “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you….” This is so critical because if we want to have meaningful relationships with others, then we need to invest in their lives by giving them support, encouraging them, helping to meet their needs—serving them as we’re able to do it. It’s easy to want to help people you like or those you want to impress. But when it comes to doing something for someone you don’t know or someone you don’t have a natural interest in, it can be a different story. And sometimes we don’t feel like serving our family. I know from personal experience that people can be willing to help others at church or work, but they aren’t willing to do the same things for their family. I’ve learned that what I do in front of people publicly won’t really mean anything if

I’m not living a life that pleases God at home, too. I thought I would die of frustration before I fi nally got this, so I know it’s not easy. We have to realize we’re naturally selfi sh, and we must make a conscious decision to think of others on purpose or we’ll miss many opportunities to serve them. I want to encourage you to read John 13 and pay close attention to what Jesus did and what He said. Spend some time studying scriptures about God’s love and pray for Him to show you ways you can serve the people in your life. See how many creative ways God puts in your heart to “wash feet.” You’ll probably fi nd it’s easier and more simple than you thought it would be to help make someone’s life better. God wants us to have success and enjoy our lives. But He wants us to die to self, get over being the center of our world, and begin to focus on looking for someone who needs our help every day. When you do this, you’ll discover you’re actually more satisfi ed, content, peaceful and happy than you’ve ever been in your life!

There are days that are - simply put - frantic. Motherhood will do that. Work will do that. Life will do that.

Chunks of time are taken, chewed up, and offered back to our weary souls in the merest snippets of respite - a song there or a

fervent prayer whispered in a desperate hush in the waiting room. I have a 3-year-old son who is a tornado with a voice box and legs. We have a dear friend his age that goes about that same speed. When things get frantic, her mother simply says, “Let’s take a break.” It’s not a form of punishment. It’s that rare thing of simply stopping the madness for a moment - like a reset.

Wilder has observed and begun to implement this in our house. It looks something like this: I’m washing dishes and out of the corner of my eye I see some sort of Wilder-created disaster. Maybe it’s him running to stand on the kitchen table. Maybe it’s just him running in circles screaming at the top of his lungs (Oh, that's just my kid? Never mind, carry on.). I open my mouth to deliver some sort of instruction (Never yelling. Who yells at their kid? Not you? Me either.). He then runs to the couch, announces, “Imma take a break!” and then proceeds to take a break. Usually this is

when I think, “Imma take a break!” I won't give you the next line in every other piece I read — "take some time for you."The world tells us the getaway is the answer — the world solved in a mani/pedi girls’ weekend. (Nothing wrong with it when you are able.) But, what if the bank account is bare, the clock is an hour past your deadline, and she just will not take a nap? Become the eye of the storm. Instead of praying for the break that may not come or accepting the idea that we don’t deserve or need one (that whole I will give to the last drop even when there's nothing left

martyr bit), look to Him. Turn your eyes to the Prince of Peace. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 (NIV) The Lord alone is able to take meager fi sh and poor-man loaves and make a feast. He is able to take the pitiful crumbs of time left at the end of a frantic day and make them much more. He is able to bring clarity and comfort in the erratic and restore the soul. He is able to lift our eyes to heaven even as our hands are covered in dirty dishwater. The One who tore the veil and raised the dead, who made the blind to see and the sea to part, is able to bring even the most gridlocked day to a restful halt in our hearts and minds. Do not believe the lie of the world that only calm from the outside equals calm within. Let Him feed your hungry soul. He is able.

One’s definition of physical fitness is as unique as

each person is. For example, a flight attendant might

measure her physical fitness by her ability to lift forty-

pound luggage above her shoulders while keeping

her balance and good posture inside a moving plane.

A Black Friday shopper’s fitness measure might be to

shop and not drop after eight hours.

The definition of physical fitness has come a long

way since the days of being in fine fettle. A more

modern definition would include

five basic components, namely:

cardiovascular, muscular strength,

muscular endurance, flexibility and

body composition.

• Cardiovascular or

cardiorespiratory or aerobic activities

improve the heart’s capacity to deliver

oxygen to the working muscles.

Walking, bicycling, swimming and

dancing are examples.

• Muscular strength and

endurance go hand in hand in

resistance exercises. Remember to

exercise each muscle group because

they atrophy if not used. Examples

include lifting weights and using strength-

training machines.

• Flexibility is maintained by stretching

muscles and joints. It’s important to warm-up first

since stretching a cold muscle can result in injury.

• Body composition is about keeping a good

balance of fat and lean mass – muscle and bones.

Nobody drifts into becoming physically fit nor is it

possible without proper nutrition and mental health.

Everything costs something. Every day, people make their choices on what they are willing to pay for in terms of amount of work or/and money for things they like to have. But, how often is cost effectiveness assessed? The economics of nutrition is much more about what it can do for you rather than what you choose to pay for it. Hence, it is complicated because it is not easy to assign a dollar amount and then assess the benefits of good nutrition, such as vitality, health, disease prevention or longevity.

Here are some ways people demonstrate good nutrition economics:• Knowledge is power. They know what is beneficial, neutral and toxin.• They progressively choose what’s beneficial and gradually eliminate what should be avoided resulting in improved health and wellness.• They know that food is for nourishment and not any form of reward. Food treats are for pets so they can learn tricks.• Preparation (meal planning) is key, and most meals are nutritious and home-cooked. • Junk food like cookies, chips, popcorn, soda, sugary juices are not part of the budget.

Kelton Marshall was a child abandoned, and a young man gone absent without offi cial leave (AWOL). He was a human from the outside destined for many things - none of them good. However, God had bigger plans and a path that would take a dramatic turn and, yet, send Kelton right back to his hometown. Before his 10th birthday, Kelton had both the gift of poetry and a mother on drugs. He dropped out of school, seemingly destined to be a statistic. His neighbors took him in, and he enrolled back in school in St. Martinville where he graduated in 2002 as a state champion in basketball. From the ages of 18 to 23 he described his life as hell on earth, repeating a series of drugs and women in his search to fi nd something to fi ll the void. He joined the military with the knowledge that his life could not continue on that same course, but by 2005 he was considered AWOL and in jail. The military gave him a ticket for a bus ride to Kentucky and a deadline to return or face serious consequences. When he arrived in Kentucky at the Greyhound station he was still miles from his destination. The clock was ticking to meet his deadline, and his pockets were empty. It would be the fi rst time, perhaps, that he encountered God. “I had no money. I was walking on the street with my military

sack on my back and tears in my eyes,” he admitted. And in his heart lingered the feeling that he would die. He looked heavenward and in desperation cried out, “If you’re real, I need you to help me.” Fifteen minutes later a couple stopped and gave him a ride. Two years later at a church in Broussard, Kelton said he encountered the Lord again. “That same spirit touched my heart,” he revealed. This time there was no turning back. “God takes tests and turns them into a testimony. Our mess becomes our message,” he said passionately. That message is one Kelton is delivering with heart to

students in St. Martinville as the chaplain. Each week the football team meets at Clambeaugh’s restaurant, and Kelton shows the players and their families what it means to serve. He believes changing the boys and the men of the community begins a domino effect that will spill across the generations and into St. Martinville. He’s preaching bold to that end. “When the man gets right and

the family gets right it equals

a church found right.” “Every move of God starts with a man of God. Inside of every kid is a king, and it takes a King to call him out,” Kelton said. Despite his roots, or perhaps because of them, Kelton is

now becoming the father to the fatherless, from students he leads to his own family (that once the adoptions are fi nalized will consist of a son and daughter). His family has found Christ in recent years, including his mother and all of his fi ve siblings. He helps with Bible studies at work, preaches in St. Martinville, and fi lls his car to the brim with people to take to Our Savior’s Church. He recently fi nished a summer basketball camp and organized a group at the St. Martinville Hope Center for people to simply pray. “A lot of people believe it’s too late. God is not made at you,” he stated fervently. It’s his hope that people will see that God is faithful. “We come as light and hope and with the gospel of grace and of love.”

After opening up the season with a commanding 45-6 victory at Cajun Field against Southern University on August 30th, their next three games resulted in disappointing defeats (a 48-20 loss to Louisiana Tech, followed by a 56-15 loss at Ole Miss, and then a 34-9 loss at Boise State). In their fi rst Sunbelt Conference game against Georgia State at home on October 4th, coming off their bye week, they pulled out a 34-31 victory that kept the fans on the edges of their seats. But the challenge presented is one Coach Hudspeth, his staff and his team, are prepared to face. In his typical upbeat and encouraging manner, Coach Hudspeth is using this season to help strengthen the resolve and focus of his team. He has a stern belief in the value of hard work and perseverance. And the team is rising to the occasion in the face of the adversity. From the coaches, all the way down to the players, the Ragin Cajun football team is embracing this opportunity to get back to the basics and to make sure they are doing the little things well on a consistent basis. It’s not un-common for parents to parent in the present without ever thinking about how their parenting is going to

affect their children in the future. It should be the goal of every parent to raise children who become healthy and responsible adults. In other words, we must remember that we are preparing our children for the future! A good question to ask as parents is, "What can I teach my young children that will guide them for the entire course of their lives?" One way to successfully prepare them for the future is to think through and identify some key godly characteristics that you would like your children to develop. Then, prayerfully consider the best way to teach them that characteristic. For example, I think it’s every parent's desire to want their child to have an attitude of gratitude and thankfulness. First Thessalonians

5:18 (NLT) says, "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." This scripture reminds us that it’s certainly God’s will for our

children to be thankful. Although it’s God’s will, it’s certainly not a given. Like many adults, it’s not most children’s natural disposition to be thankful. As parents we must take time to work with them and teach them to have an attitude of thankfulness. How do you teach them to be thankful? Let me offer you a few suggestions.

Train them be thankful. It starts with little things like teaching them to say thank you when someone gives them a gift, someone compliments them on their behavior or

a personal accomplishment, or their brother or sister helps them accomplish a task. Also, encourage and help them to send a thank you card to someone who gave them a gift for a special occasion. This may seem insignifi cant, but every time you encourage them to give thanks you’re ultimately helping them develop a thankful attitude. Teach them to be thankful to God. Another key to training children to be thankful, especially to be thankful to God, is to help them to see God’s many blessings in their lives.

It’s easy to overlook or not even see God’s hand of blessing and provision in your life. However, as you help them see God’s blessings and be thankful for God’s blessings, you will ultimately be helping them to develop their personal faith and trust in a loving and gracious God. They will begin to understand and see a most important attribute of God, which is His kindness and goodness.

James 1:17 (NASU) says, "Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow." You need to help your children to see that every blessing and gift they receive really comes from the Lord. What a great blessing when your children begin to recognize and offer up praise and thanksgiving unto God! Teach them to rejoice when others get blessed. It can be hard to be happy when others get blessed because in our selfishness we want it to always be about us. Romans 12:15 (NLT) tells us to be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. I was having a conversation with a 9-year-old the other day about a successful duck hunt with his dad. He then told me about his friends who went to that same spot the next day and did three times better. He stopped midsentence and said, "But we have to be happy for them and their success, but I wished we would have had the success they had." I thought to myself that this is a young man whose parents are teaching him how to rejoice when others get blessed. When you encourage your children to celebrate others’ accomplishments and blessings, you’re really helping them develop a level of gratitude and thankfulness that many in society lack. Teach them to be thankful in all circumstances. This requires you to teach them a Job perspective in life. In Job 2:10, Job replied to his wife who wanted him to curse God after encountering tremendous tragedy.

Job said, "You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?"

Rather than curse God he worshipped God. Job learned to be thankful to God in all circumstances by recognizing the fact that if God had not blessed so much he really would not have anything to loose. You also need to teach your children a Romans 8:28 (NLT) perspective which says,

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” It rains on the just and unjust yet God’s hand of favor and grace is still on them and can turn their bitter experiences into the greatest blessings. Provide them with a great example to follow. It can help tremendously to see somebody living out what you’re trying to learn, and your children are no different. They learn best by seeing you model what you’re trying to teach them. Some things in life are best caught rather than taught. A thankful attitude is one of

those things. In 1 Corinthians 11:1 (NLT),

Paul said, “And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” The bottom line is that if you want your children to develop a thankful attitude you need to model a thankful attitude in front of them. When God wants to grow a mushroom it takes Him only a day, but when He wants to grow a mighty oak tree it takes Him years. The Lord wants your children to be mighty oaks of righteousness in His kingdom. This takes time and patience. There is no greater way of investing your life as a parent than to help your children develop into mighty, godly oaks of righteousness.

Nothing is greater than waking up to brisk morning air, the leaves change

color, the smells of fall, and, of course, pumpkin everything! Like many, I absolutely adore pumpkin and attempt to make pretty much any pumpkin recipe I can get my hands on. There is one special recipe that I make every year, and it holds a cherished spot on my holiday dinner table: pumpkin pie. But what is so special about this pumpkin pie is that for as long as I can remember, my mother has made her pie from an actual pumpkin. Growing up overseas with my father in the military, we weren’t able to visit extended family very often, so we created our own family traditions. I have never met anyone other than my mother who uses real pumpkin in pumpkin pie. She even taught my grandfather how to do the same (it was the perfect pairing for grandpa’s flaky pie crust). Using a real pumpkin provides a lot more incentive for a child to help because it brings along the chance to get messy! This year my older daughter was more adventurous and got deep in the goo with me while my younger daughter preferred to watch. Either way, it just tastes so good. Plus, you get pumpkin seeds to roast as a bonus! I have followed in my mother’s footsteps, and I hope that my two daughters will do the same when they grow up and have families of their own. This is a memory that is steeped in tradition for me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The first step in cooking an old-fashioned pumpkin pie is to pick a pumpkin. You can definitely use the small pie pumpkins, but the big pumpkins work just as well. Cut the pumpkin in half and remove all the seeds and innards. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Rinse the pumpkin halves under cold water and place cut side down on a large cookie sheet. You can microwave or boil/steam the pumpkin, but I prefer to bake for approximately 1 hour or until the pumpkin is fork tender. Once the pumpkin is cool enough, remove the peel and mash the pumpkin to form a purée. I do this in my mixer. What’s great about this puree is that it freezes well for up to one year, so you don’t have to use it all at once. Now for the recipe:OLD-FASHIONED PUMPKIN PIE• 2 eggs• 2 cups pumpkin• ¾ cup sugar• ½ teaspoon salt• 1 teaspoon cinnamon•½ teaspoon ginger•¼ teaspoon cloves•1 2/3 cup evaporated milk Heat oven to 425 degrees. Prepare pastry crust. Beat eggs slightly. Beat in remaining ingredients. Pour into pastry-lined 9-inch pan. To prevent spills, place pie pan on oven rack when filling with pumpkin mixture. Bake 15 minutes. Reduce oven to 350 degrees. Bake pie 45 minutes longer or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool. Serve with whipped cream.

Grandpa Burke’s Pie Crust - (double batch)• 3 cups flour • 1 cup salad oil• ½ cup water• 2 pinches salt Mix all ingredients together. Separate into two balls. Roll out between waxed paper.

Little Lambs Outreach is a ministry to the children of the incarcerated

and an outreach of InnerFaith Prison Ministry, Inc. We strive to minister to the entire family unit and are dedicated to reaching these children before they become a statistic. We want to reach out and let these innocent children know that they are valued and loved. Little Lambs holds events throughout the year in order to stay involved with the children and to let them know that God has a

plan for them. We hold a huge back to school bash in order to make sure the children have everything they need to get an education, our LL mentors call them on their birthdays, and there is even a huge Christmas party. We would like to offer you an opportunity to become involved in the lives of the children in our Little Lambs Outreach Program for Christmas time. The children in our program have one or both of their parents behind bars. Some of the caregivers have no one to help them provide for these children during the loneliest times of the year.

Maddi Carpenter is sowing seeds...of the soccer ball variety. The 10-year-old ESA student began Soccer Seeds two years ago after noticing something troubling in a photo of her aunt on a mission trip. “They just had tied rags for a soccer ball, and I felt bad for them,” she said.But, Maddi did more than just feel something when she saw children playing soccer with far less than she and others have. She did something. Her mom met with Buffalo Wild Wings and with their support, along with LCA Soccer, children in third world countries have real soccer balls now. The balls are deflated, packaged with a pump, and sent with missionaries. “I thought it would make the kids feel better - special - that someone gave them a new ball,” Maddi said. The package includes a picture of the Carpenter family and a short bio. “I hope they feel someone cares, and they enjoy it.”

My husband and I used to tell our children all kinds of stories….and they used to believe every word we said. We were their parents. If you didn’t eat you carrots, you would not be able to see when you turned 7. That spray can of Glade air freshener wrapped with a paper that said Monster Spray killed any monster within a 1 mile radius. As they got older, they began to question some things and others they still just believed. We could see the changes in them as they got older. They began to say, “Really, is that true?” They began to think for themselves and not just take our word for it. They were growing up. We grow up spiritually as well. We often just believe what is told to us without giving any thought to its truth. It isn’t until we begin to question and seek deeper meaning in things that we begin to grow up. The balance is finding that point where you question for truth, but you believe by faith. That can be a hard place to find and remain. As I read the verse, I immediately thought of my kids walking along sidewalks or

through a store with colored tiles. They were trying desperately not to step on a crack or certain color so they would not “break their mama’s back.” They would get so caught up in looking down and watching their every step, they forgot to look up. There were many a column, a person or a car that they stepped right into before they knew it because their

concentration was on the step itself. You have to look up, look around and see the whole picture sometimes. Give thought

to your steps, but be mindful of where you are headed. God says seek Him and He will be found.

PrayerLord, help us to seek the truth, search out things for ourselves as we read Your word and walk in Your ways. Help us to be prudent men and women and not be tossed by the waves believing everything that we hear. You said false prophets would come. Please give us wisdom to see them for who they are. Let no man turn our hearts from You. May this day be a day that we all give You glory for every step we take. Use us to increase Your kingdom and glorify Your name. Amen.

My story is simple. I love music. It has been a part of every hour of my life since I was born. If I am not listening to songs, I am thinking about them. If I am not thinking about music, it is subconsciously coming out of me. My parents infl uenced me well with songs of the 60s-80s. I grew up on 8 tracks and cassettes, which were awesome to throw around in the car but bad to leave on the dash. We listened to Steppenwolf, Creedence, Paul Simon, the Art of Noise and Prince — at least that was from my dad. Mom would infl uence us with Jim Croce, John Denver and OMD. I grew to love music and where it would take me. I was made for it. We were forced to take piano lessons in which I learned how to play “Heart and Soul” and “Home Sweet Home” by Mötley Crüe. I eventually got a drum set and beat the mess out of it until the entire family thought it would be best to keep the family together by selling it. My brother and I grew up listening to old country and rap, and we were into DMC and the Beastie Boys. Eventually I took up guitar. We bought my fi rst guitar, a 6 string acoustic yamaha, from the Houston chronicle classifi eds. I loved that thing, and I played it night and day. Dad taught me my fi rst tune: House of the Rising Sun. Yes, I am now a worship pastor in Louisiana, and my introductory musicianship was about a house of ill repute in New Orleans. Nice. I am currently on staff with Trinity Bible Church in Lafayette, Louisiana as full time Worship and Arts Pastor (music and fancy-stuff guy). I have been leading worship with two or more people since I lived in 3rd Long (carpenter dorms at Texas Tech) in 1991. I played all fi ve songs and all three chords over and over again until the cows came home. I love teaching people scripture in music that sticks with them. I love what music does to us emotionally, and I love being a creative

musician. I have learned tons of songs over the years, many of them stick with you. I still know the same 5 chords. The power and purpose of worship is one of the greatest things to be surrounded by. Music has the ability to change your mood, your outlook and your plans. It keeps you awake when you are driving, it agrees with you when you are sad, it holds your hand when you are confused, and it lights a small path when you are wandering. The problem is that it is only half of life. Without Jesus as the central core we are just singing to ourselves. The music is about us instead of being about something bigger. With Jesus as the central role in music, it doesn’t matter what style, beat or decibel level it is. To fi nd the true heart of the sinner in humbleness towards a loving God is what we were created for. I am often confused when I drive by a church and see a sign that reads "Worship Concert tonight". Which one is it: worship or a concert? One is for God, and one is for the individual. I know this because for about 15 years I traveled full time playing many concerts in churches, camps and retreats. At some point God said to me, “Well, which one is it?” I learned that one is performance (and that is ok with Him) and the other is unfettered focus on Him. As a songwriter I would go and sing about God and life. It is in the name of Jesus and is a great thing. I am called to do it. The fl ipside is being called to be a worship pastor. That means being called to bring others together in community with songs that bridge the gap between them and God. I dropped all my guitar tricks, loops and performer mojo to serve my local church. The purpose of worship (worth-ship) is to

acknowledge God and acknowledge that He is worthy of our full attention and praise. Then put some feet on it. We all worship differently but are called to humble ourselves before Him. The power of worship is where music can temporarily change my mood, my desires, my thoughts and my fi nesse, only God can change me from the inside out. Only the creator of life has the ability to make something bigger than me happen. Something infi nite and bold happens to us when we worship the one and only King. As a worship leader I get this great opportunity to see the spirit of God literally moving through a bunch of folks all gathered together singing to God. I get to sing scripture over people every week. I get to hand it to them in a way that is repeatable and meaningful. At the end of the day, if I messed up on a song, broke a string, had bad rhythm and forgot the bridge, it’s okay. I know deep in that beautiful place where God loves me and believes in me that His strength is made perfect in me.

told Him that I was sorry. I told Him that I recognized that my life was unmanageable by myself, and I was ready to surrender my will entirely to the will of God. That day was the best day of my life! I promised God that I would study His word

and seek Him in all that I do. As I look back on it now, I

realize that God acted in my life almost immediately.

A few days later, I met Russell Roseberry through InnerFaith Prison Ministry, and God’s work in my life had begun. I began to have dreams and visions of what God wanted me to do.

One thing that I dreamed of was that I

should write my wife a love letter every Sunday.

I mentioned this idea to Brother Russell. He supported

the endeavor and gave me further guidance to “get under my wife’s load.”

My goal is to support her in my love letters and to try not to control her and change her mind. God told me that loving my wife unconditionally was pleasing to Him. I aim to please him in all that I do from now on.

Since 1980, InnerFaith Prison Ministry has had the privilege of taking thousands of volunteers and churches behind prison walls to bring a message of hope and restoration to those who are the least of these and forgotten. InnerFaith has seen thousands of inmates come to Christ. Our desire is to see an inmate discipled and prepared for their release to the outside. This is one of their stories:

Shane Welch's Story At the age of 33, I found myself in jail. Only three years earlier, I thought I had it all! I had a beautiful wife, three kids under the age of 7, houses, vehicles and money….but I didn’t have God. Now, I was stuck in a place and in a situation where I had to hear all the stories of my wife and kids on a 15 minute phone call with 100 men standing around screaming and hollering! I thought I had my life under control. I thought that I could do whatever I wanted anytime I wanted and get out of any situation that may arise. I thought that if I didn’t get immediately caught for something than it must be the right thing to do. I thought that God was for those religious folks. I was wrong; I was very wrong! My wife borrowed $1,500 from a friend to hire a divorce lawyer; she felt abandoned, lied to, cheated, wronged and shameful….she was right! A few days after I unexpectantly found myself in jail, I got on my knees and cried out to God. I told Him that I surrendered and that I realized that I can’t do it by myself anymore! I had hit rock bottom. I had lost my freedom and practically lost my wife and family. I was in the worse position a man could find himself, and it was all my fault. I

Nathan Sam leads worship with purpose

I heard a pastor say once that the only thing we really need to do in life is to listen to God and do what He says. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was getting out of the bathtub, being dried off by my mom, with a heart full of questions about my sinful nature and need for a Savior. At an early age of five, I just felt something was wrong. I gave my life to Jesus Christ that night. It was the first time that I listened to God and did what He said. What followed was a process where the transformation happened. In middle school I felt God was calling me to ministry, and I didn’t know what that would look like. I was in college when a series of events changed the direction of my life. Within a short period of time I was hit by a drunk driver, Hurricane Katrina wrecked my hometown, and both of my parents were diagnosed with cancer. I was steadfast in my belief that God had a plan, even when I didn’t have a clue what it would look like. And God is faithful! I love what it is says in 2 Timothy 2, starting in verse 11.

Here is a trustworthy saying:If we died with him,

we will also live with him;if we endure,

we will also reign with him.If we disown him,

he will also disown us;if we are faithless,

he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

The part that I love most is verse 13, if we are faithless; He remains faithful for He cannot deny Himself. It’s who He is. He is faithful. Nothing is beyond God. Nothing is off limits for Him to use for our good. He used those circumstances to mold me into whom I am meant to be. I met my wife Allie in the process following college. We have

three beautiful girls and are in love! In 2013, we accepted a call to come to Our Savior’s Church as the Worship Pastors and truly feel we are walking in our calling. From salvation, to trusting God’s promises (even in chaos), to marriage and the calling on my life, every decision that has been from God has been the most defining and rewarding moments of my life. No matter what we face or will face I have never regretted listening to God and doing what He says.

“Therefore, my brothers and sisters, make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:11

We are privileged as citizens of the United States to have our

inalienable rights written in the Declaration of Independence. It clearly states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." After this declaration, a long and bitter war was fought with former British citizens along with other nationalities against the British Crown. In declaring war, these people became the fi rst offi cial American citizens. Most of these citizens lost all they owned and, even more tragically their lives, the lives of their children and families. The fi rst citizens knew that the only way to be free was to commit everything they had to the cause. This declaration created a country founded and committed to the principles of its Creator. A Nation so committed to God that they based their rights as citizens upon what this God declares in His word, the Bible. Let's look at what our founding fathers were declaring when forming this government by the people for the people.

We hold these truths to be self-evident What truths, and why self-evident? John

18:37 (NLT), Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” As a nation, it is self-evident that the United States became the greatest nation in the world because of God's protection, favor and the faithfulness of past generations. Is it self-evident that removing God from government has changed the course of this nation? To answer this question, one has to decide where truth comes from. Where would you say self-evident truth comes from?

That all men are created equal Acts 10:34-35 (NLT), Then Peter replied, “I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.” Is there any nation throughout history that has no sin? We, the United States of America, have much to answer for like any other nation. Yet can a person being born in a third world country argue that God showed favoritism to someone born here in America? Or has God given everyone born the same access to Him?

Romans 1:20 (NLT), For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities -- his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Should man question how God sees equality? Or should man accept how God’s word describes equality amongst men?

That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights 1 Peter 4:19 (NLT), So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you. Could it be unalienably right to do what is right? Who then would decide what rights we have? The Creator of all things has given us clear instructions on what is right. The outcome of living according to His word produces character traits that there are no laws against. Should His rights be the rights we seek?

That among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness Luke 12:15 (NLT), Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” That sounds un-American! Today some Americans feel entitled to provisions in abundance yet have no desire to earn those provisions. Even our school system seems to teach that whatever you believe is ok. However, if you believe 2+2= 6, you will have a hard time with measuring something! Hard working Americans are required to give more from their pay checks to cover the non-working. Where do Christians fi t in this scenario, how do we measure our lives?

grace and mercy and Holy Spirit conviction? It seems not to be. It seems liberty is to have and do what you want based on your own thoughts and desires. What liberty will you seek with the life your given?

Luke 12:32 (NLT), “So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.” What makes you happy? Americans will have an election. The question is, what as Americans are we seeking? We choose the direction of this country and who will lead it by our vote. Are we seeking the happiness that brings order and blessings? Or is it what's best for me? I would ask that you consider voting morally according to the Bible. Many believe differently about moral obligations, yet if the

bible is the guide, it removes most ambiguity for the believer. One thing is sure, every person alive has a choice, and in this country, your choice counts in the form of a vote. What will you base your choice, your vote on?

Thanksgiving to God This month, along with voting, we also set aside a day of Thanksgiving to God. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed, "Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may then be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe."

Covenant Spotlight joins with dear old Abe in giving God all the praise, glory and thanksgiving for our country, our lives and the favor he has given us in this country. May God bless you and yours with a stronger desire to serve Him this Thanksgiving Day.

Colossians 3:16-17, Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives. Sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

The planning has started. Preparations are being made for a huge dinner and a day fi lled with family, eating and fellowship. We are all looking forward to a day off to relax and enjoying some down time with family and friends. I can smell the pumpkin pie baking in the oven and hear the sound of laughter and conversation now. Perhaps while we are preparing to enjoy a nice relaxing break from the everyday norm, we can remember to be thankful for the One who made all this possible. It’s okay to think about and be thankful for Jesus before December. Merchants are good at getting us to think of the next holiday long before it is here. That way we have time to salivate over things that we have to have. If we see these holiday items for long enough, we realize that we just have to have them, and, eventually, we go ahead and buy them. What if we as believers took the same approach to winning souls?

What if we allowed the world to see Jesus in us for long enough that they would be curious enough to ask why it is that we can be at peace even when circumstances would dictate that we should be screaming and crying hysterically? What if we walked daily in

the peace, love and joy that Jesus came to give us? Do you think people who have not yet come into relationship with Jesus might be more willing to at least give it some thought if we imitated Christ in our daily walk? Let’s be Christ-like in our everyday lives, and when the opportunity arises, let’s be willing to share Jesus with others. Jesus died for us so that we could have abundant life through Him. If you haven’t yet asked Jesus into your heart, please do so today. We are not promised tomorrow; therefore, tomorrow may be too late.
