No rush into any CCO arrangementsRatepayers should not be concerned that

Waipa District Council is rushing into anyarrangement to form a CCO for the deliveryof water and waste water services acrossour district.

It is not. In fact, the Council has taken anextremely cautious approach to this recom-mendation, and will continue to do so.

We are currently working through alarge number of complex issues withWaikato District and Hamilton City Coun-cil around the possibility of forming a CCO.But it is still just that — a possibility.

There are still many complex things toresolve before we can even considerrecommending a draft agreement for con-

sideration by the community. There are different points of view among

councillors. But I think we all agree that, fora CCO to be formed, it must provide waterservices that are cheaper and be morereliable than what we currently have. Bylaw, we are obliged to provide services inthe most effective and efficient manner.

In fact, central Government is proposingto change the Local Government Act toactively encourage Councils to look atalternative service delivery models likeCCOs that will deliver more cost-effectiveservices.

We have also had four independentreports which agree a CCO would offer

financial and non-financial advantages toour ratepayers. Given that, we need toseriously consider it. It my view, it wouldbe irresponsible not to.

This is a very complex issue and anydecision is a long way off. We will continueto look at it from all sides, in the bestinterests of Waipa ratepayers.

In the meantime, like Cr St Pierre, Iwould encourage people to find out more bygoing to www.waterstudywaikato.org.nz.

This website contains copies of all theindependent reports received, plus all coun-cil reports on this issue and much more.

JIM MYLCHREESTWaipa Mayor

Summer never ends in prosperous KiwilandI note the turn of the season and new

beginnings with harvest of the goldengrain.

Those with Corrections’ ankle braceletsnow have a tan line. We are in post flagdebate time. The planets have all alignedand the pumpkins are coming in from thegarden. Preserving pans are warming upbut we will not be having council annualplan submissions this year as these wereall made last year in anticipation of thenext ten years, so everything is up to date.

Te Awamutu is in a hearty position.Dairy company shares will be on the up

due to substantial pay-outs based on thepromise of further huge profits due to lowmilk prices. The Government has evengenerously dropped the value of the NewZealand dollar so that international buyerscan have yet another discount and we are

all singing Everything is Beautiful. We are even going to have a new trade

agreement with our Pacific partners butthis was nearly spoiled by one of yourcorrespondents, who said that we can’ttrust Americans.

That was nearly a racist remark, but thecrisis was averted by high rolling diplo-mats explaining that she didn’t reallymean it.

Fonterra has promised that they willtake all the milk the farmers can producenext year so Mr Wilson’s pockets will be sofull of easy money that he won’t fit throughthe door. So what if milk is at bargainbasement prices? That just adds to the fun.

The children are all doing well atschool. Some will be travelling overseas tosee poverty for the first time but don’tworry, they will be home soon and it won’t

be long before they forget about it.Rugby will be the winner on the day and

booze will be cheaper than ever. Nobodywill notice that the rugged kiwi individual, fix it with No 8 wire, attitude has beenreplaced by coffee swilling snobbery andcycle pants are now trendy for those over60.

Things are even looking up for theprison officers who are now sitting in onanger management therapy and nanniesare being recruited to boost their numbers. One or two have even tried sharing thingswith the group and there were tears.

I hear that they are even taking dancinglessons at Waikeria with the first twonumbers being the Mashed Potato and theTwist. Perhaps we will see some linedancing soon?

Fifteen people from Te Awa-mutu Light Operatic Society travel-led to Rotorua recently for theMusical Theatre New Zealand Con-ference.

For Talos founding member andlife member Coral Taylor it was awonderful opportunity to meet andhear guest speaker Richard O’Brien— creator and star of The RockyHorror Show — both on stage andscreen.

But there was an ulterior motivefor the Te Awamutu members, andwhen Musical Theatre MeritAwards were presented after theconference dinner, for services tomusical theatre, it became apparentwhat that motive was.

The awards were for thosesociety members who had given 20or more years service.

Mrs Taylor has given more than40 years service to Talos, and whenher name was read to receive anaward for Outstanding Service toMusical Theatre, she received astanding ovation from hercolleagues.

In the early years Mrs Taylor wasa member of the cast of Talos shows, but she soon moved front of stageand began directing.

“I enjoyed being on stage, but Iwasn’t a solo vocalist and I wantedmore of a challenge,” she says.

During her career with Talos,Mrs Taylor has directed 17 majormusicals, plus numerous reviewsand Christmas reviews.

Some of the large scaleproductions that have played at TheWoolshed under Mrs Taylor includeGuys and Dolls, South Pacific,Music Man, Footrot Flats, Annie,Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof andBlood Brothers.

She has also directed a number ofnon-musical plays at The Woolshedand was active with Little Theatrefor a number of years, directingplays for their stage and having

success in one act play festivals. When not directing, there have

been few shows in which Mrs Taylorhasn’t taken some significant role.

She has been stage manager orproduction manager on a number ofoccasions, looked after wardrobeand millinery, been in charge ofproperties and has often engaged inanother of her passions and taken onchoreography.

Mrs Taylor is hands-on when itcomes to helping set up or packdown for shows and has also helpedwith Talos Junior Choir.

Talos members were proud MrsTaylor was recognised by thenational body for the all the hardwork she has done for the societyand the enjoyable entertainment shehas provided for Te Awamututheatre-goers for four decades.

Now,what can do for you?

Beam me up ScottyOnboard the International

Space Station (ISS) aquiet revolution in

spaceflight is beginning. If allgoes according to plan, a newaddition will be installed on theorbiting research outpost thismonth.

The Bigelow ExpandableActivity Module (BEAM) is anew ‘room’ that will be attachedto the station. What makes thisroom different is that instead ofhaving aluminum walls like therest of the ISS, BEAM is aninflatable module with a softfabric shell. It is transported tothe station deflated, then blownup like a balloon until it reachesits full volume of 16 cubicmetres.

Inflatable modules aresmaller and lighter than rigidstructures, meaning that largermodules can be launchedmuch more cheaply.

The concept is not new —NASA first considered the ideain the 1960s but never receivedenough funding to pursue it. Inthe early 2000s privatecompany Bigelow Aerospacebegan developing prototypesand launched two successfultest units into space. NASA

then gave Bigelow a contract tosupply the BEAM module forthe ISS.

While Bigelow is very happywith this contract, it’s actuallymore focused on its own plansto build the world’s firstcommercial space station andspace hotel. Construction iswell underway here on Earth;Bigelow’s main problem ishaving to wait for othercompanies to develop suitablelaunch rockets. This shouldhappen within the next coupleof years and it’s likely thatspace hotels will become areality within ten years.

If the idea of floating aroundin a space balloon makes you

nervous, don’t worry. The fabricshell is at least as safe asaluminum. It has multiple layersto withstand meteoroid impactsand in the unlikely event of apenetration, it would slowly leakinstead of bursting.

Another advantage of thefabric skin is its ability to absorbnoise, making for a quieterliving environment.

There are many otherpotential applications forinflatable space habitats, including buildings on the Moonand Mars. It’s almost certainthat this technology will be aintegral part of future spaceexploration, and it’s taking ahuge step forward right now.

■ From page 1But it turned out that,

although records could eas-ily be found for many ofthose listed, the records ofothers were hard to locate.

“One reason was thatsome of the names recordedwere incomplete, whilespelling errors were com-mon.

“In some cases, theinitials on the WarMemorial Hall tabletsappeared to be for thenames by which those menwere known locally, where-as most of those in theWaipa Post list were theinitials of their actual givennames.

“Initially, it was alsodifficult to understand whysome of those listed were onthe Pirongia Roll of Honourbecause when they enlistedfor military service theylived elsewhere, but ittranspired that some werefrom families who hadlived in the district in thepast and a number hadattended local schools, sothey were still regarded aslocal boys.”

Pirongia CommunityAssociation President JohnWood welcomed relativesof the fallen soldiers, com-munity members andpeople interested in thehistory of the area to thePirongia War MemorialHall.

The ceremony to unveilthe panel also includedspeakers Haupai Puke andTai Huata (PurekirekiMarae) and RSA districtvice-president TerryFindlay. The Last Post andReveille were played byDavid Haberfield, while

the ode was read byPirongia pupils TylerStorey, Zanthe White andJack Ruthe.

A prayer of thanksgiv-ing for the fallen was

given by Padre MurrayOlson. Those whoattended were able to viewthe panel, share storiesand enjoy afternoon teaafter the ceremony.

Soldier sickened by killing

TC050416SP08ABROTHERS Stewart (left) and William Alexander bothserved in World War I.

The Honours Board of thePirongia Memorial Hallfeatures W. Alexander —William Alexander ofMangapiko — who volun-teered early in the conflict anddied in action in 1916 aged 23.

The following year hisbrother Stewart turned 21 andvolunteered to serve — begin-ning a 33-year militaryassociation.

His niece Flora Boumareports he left from Welling-ton as a Lance Corporal but bythe time he marched intoEtaples in France in June hadbeen promoted to Corporal.

In October Stewart Alexan-der was again promoted, toSergeant, and in Novemberwas awarded the Dis-tinguished Conduct Medal.

In 1918, now a Lieutenant,Stewart was wounded inaction, still in France.

He was transferred from aFrench hospital to GeorgesHospital in London, where herecovered.

Letters home to a cousinwhile serving in Franceshowed young Stewartthought the country was mag-nificent — all the fields up tothree miles from the frontwere in wheat, oats, beans, peas, potatoes, clover, marigolds or hops.

There was no wasteland. But I could not describe

Messines Battlefield to you if Itried, for the havoc and ruindefies description.

Just imagine all your beau-tiful aspen trees torn, smashedand uprooted and not a branchleft on any of them.

Everything was destroyed— no grass anywhere — just

gaping holes and devastation. He and other soldiers

enjoyed occasional opportun-ities to help France’s old menand young girls to reap theharvests.

He also wrote that headmired the efforts of theYMCA to provide entertain-ment and tea and biscuitsclose to the front lines.

But the war itself he foundsickening.

Stewart confided that thefirst German he bayonettedwas with a sense of revengefor William. But later, sickened by the killing, hefaced a young soldier lying inthe mud and looking up athim with terrified eyes.

Stewart helped the boy up— but never wrote whether helet him go or took himprisoner.

In 1919 he returned homeand in 1924 was transferred toReserve of Officers and duringWWII, in 1943, he was a Majorin the Home Guard.

Stewart Alexander retiredfrom the military in 1950.

His name lives on — Stew-art Alexander Golf Club isnamed in his honour.

The original Pokuru GolfClub had a nine hole courseon Stewart Alexander’s farm.

Every Saturday he wouldmove the sheep from thecourse and prepare it for theday’s competition — and henever charged a penny.

When the farm was sold, the arrangement ceased, andPokuru Golf Club boughttheir current land and estab-lished the 18-hole coursenamed after the man who hadbeen so generous.

Big time exposure for young rugby talentAn invitational Waikato Under 21

rugby team will have a rare internationalfixture against the Fijian Under 20 teamat Albert Park, Te Awamutu tomorrownight.

The match, kicking off at 7.30pm onWednesday, is part of the Fiji Under 20preparations for the upcoming 2016World Rugby Under 20 Championship inEngland.

Waikato Rugby Union jumped at therequest from Fiji to host the game, seeingit as a chance to expose those players whohave recently left the academy system toa higher level of rugby.

WRU director of rugby Leon Holden,

who will coach the Waikato Under 21team alongside WRU emerging playersmanager Kent Currie, is excited aboutthe one off fixture.

“This is a great opportunity for us togive an important age group of playersgame time at a higher level to gaugewhere they are at. It will also provide achance for some players who haverecently moved to the province to maketheir mark,” says Holden.

“The match will give our New ZealandUnder 20 hopefuls another game toimpress the selectors and at the sametime help our Pacific neighbours whohave a heavy influence on rugby in the

Waikato, particularly on the club scene.”The selection of the Waikato players

has been spread evenly across thepremier and division 1 clubs so there isminimal disruptions to those teams asthey work into their seasons.

The sole Te Awamutu player to beincluded is Tiuke Mahoni, who will starton the bench subject to passing a fitnesstest after receiving a head knock playingfor Te Awamutu Sports against premierclub champions Hamilton Marist onSaturday.

Mahoni is a No 8 out of Sacred HeartCollege in Auckland. He is in the WaikatoAcademy.

Special Note:Jag (formerly of Health 2000,Te Awamutu)

is available to assist you with health concerns.

Former Te Awamutu Osteopath Dr Dave Ward-Smith

has opened a new health shop in Dinsdale, Hamilton.

After an accident that put him in a coma, Dr Ward-

Smith says it was his colleagues knowledge of

supplementation that allowed him to make a

miraculous recovery.

It was this experience that prompted him to open a

health shop that stocks supplements, homeopathic

remedies, herbal remedies and essential oils.

Thai massage, a sleep clinic and counselling are also

available.

Dr Ward-Smith says they didn’t want to be part

of a franchise so the Health Shop Hamilton is an

independent store.

“It allows us to sell quality natural health products that

we believe in.”

“We also have a host of practitioners available who can

Ekko Park’s drummer isNick Douch, originallyfrom Te Awamutu and aBachelor of Music graduatefrom Hamilton’s ownWintec.

“A big goal for oursecond album was to haveour songs stack up inter-nationally,” he says.

“We were proud of thesongs we had written andgot in an international pro-duction team to work on the

album with us.“To see Probable Cause

get the reaction it did in justone week in Italy is over-whelming and has reallygotten the ball rolling for usin Europe. It is currentlysitting inside the top 20 afterfour weeks alongside someof rocks biggest names andhas been added to an addi-tional 200 stations acrossEurope.”

Look out for all thosewell-known Exponents hitsthat made Jordan a house-hold name.
