Death-dealing by the New LeftIn the 1970s, Secular

Humanists of the New Leftintroduced into societyslogans — The Unwanted andThe Life Not Worth Living.

Soon after abortion lawsrelaxed, protecting the medi-cal doctors who were willing, for various reasons, to invadethe sanctity of mothers’wombs to kill the most inno-cent and defenceless membersof society. Thus, abortionmills flourished under re-spectable names such asHealth Care.

Currently in Parliament isa Bill to extend the killings tothe born. The Life Not WorthLiving? Humanist ManifestoTwo states: “We are con-

cerned for the welfare of theaged, the infirm, thedisadvantaged, and also forthe outcasts — the mentallyretarded, the abandoned orabused children, the handi-capped, prisoners, and addicts— for all who are neglected orignored by society. …”

Are the above named in thecategory The Life Not worthLiving?

Reasons for asking are:1. Over the 42 years since

printing Humanist ManifestoTwo, Humanists haven’tconcreted concerns into prac-tical help for these people. Why not?

2. Man becomes humanthrough being socialised (H J

Blackham). Mans’ humanityrests on his being able toeffectively communicate with, and function in society withhis fellow humans. Unbornbabies aren’t socialised so canbe killed. The brain-damagedare never going to relate —they can be killed. Others inthe above list are notsocialised or fully socialised, and may never be. Can they allbe disposed of?

3. Humanists believe thatthe value of a life or thing isdependent on its usefulness tosociety — Pragmatism (WJames). How useful are thosedependents named abovewhen they’re seen as aneconomic burden, and a drain

on time and energy of thesocialised?

4. Humanists want popula-tion growth controlled. How?

5. Because threads of Hu-manist philosophy emphasiseMe, Myself and I, and auton-omy (self-law) guided by feel-ings, they’re self-serving asopposed to love and service ofothers in need.

6. Many Humanistsolutions to social problemsare death-dealing ones be-cause New Left members areintellectually spearheaded bySecular Humanism — a mainthread of which can be traced500BC to Heraclitus the darkphilosopher.

Safe fireworks joy for kidsI have to say I read with

disappointment and frus-tration the negativityabout fireworks causingdistress.

I would dare to say thatthese individuals are notaround children to see thejoy, delight and wonderthat fireworks bring.

We purchase a smallamount each year, and ourchildren and their cousinsare so excited when webring them out. Theydance with giggles, spin-ning sparklers — well-supervised, at safe dis-tances from each other, with a bucket of cold waterhandy to drop the hot

wires into.They clap and “ooh”

and “ahh” huddled underblankets watching rocketsshoot up, lighting the skywith magical showers ofcolour.

Fire safety is para-mount. Fireworks arecarefully set up well awayfrom spectators. Rocketsare anchored correctlyand aimed toward emptyspaces. A bucket or two ofwater is on hand should itbe needed. We also notifyneighbours of our fire-works plans so that petsare indoors.

Thunderclaps can bejust as loud and sudden as

fireworks and I have seenstorms spook animals justas much as fireworks. Butyou can’t ban a storm.

I don’t agree that ban-ning fireworks is some-thing to aim for. Beingresponsible and consider-ate, is.

It isn’t difficult to no-tify neighbours with petsof intended plans, allowing them to takemeasures to enclose ormove animals.

Does a few startledmoments, soon forgotten, outweigh the lasting, joy-ful memories made withchildren?

CHERIE DONOVAN

Sign misplacedThe confiscation line of 1864 had a road

sign put up at 400 Arapuni Road last year. When I rang the Council I said it

should have been put about 300 metresfurther on.

They said the Auckland Historical putit there and it would be too hard to moveas the posts were set in concrete.

A few weeks ago the sign was run intoand broken and one post pushed over.

Guess what — it has been replaced inthe same place.

Don’t some departments even talk toone another, or are they all at anothermeeting or on leave?

Where it is placed I would bet evenmoney that within one year it will be runover again, as cars and trucks have ahabit of running off the road along thereas they come round the corner too fastand are not concentrating properly.

Milestone reachedto keep power on

TC191115SP03A/TC191115SP03BThe first pole is placed for the new line.

A significant milestone wasreached in construction of asecond electricity 110kV line toreinforce the supply to Te Awa-mutu when Waipa Networksinstalled the first pole.

M o r e t h a n h a l f t h efoundations for the new powerline have been excavated andformed ready for the new poles, which will hold the new linesupplying Te Awamutu fromHangatiki to the south.

For many years Te Awamutuand surrounding areas have suf-fered numerous blackouts due tothe single supply line from Kara-piro.

Waipa Networks CEO RayMilner said every four years theline was removed from servicefor maintenance , and every fouryears the local community askedthem to do something to avoidoutages.

“Erection of this pole marks a

significant milestone for thecompany and its customers,” hesaid . “It is the culmination ofmany years work in design, engineering, planning, gainingResource Consents and land-owner permissions to be able tobuild it.”

The line, which will supplyabout 14,000 customers fromKawhia to the east of Te Awa-mutu is due for commissioningmid-2016.

Public buy-in to river workshopsMore than 1000 stakeholders and members of the

public have now been involved in workshops and anonline survey related to the project aimed atrestoring and protecting the Waikato and Waiparivers.

The workshops and survey were part of theWaikato Regional Council and river iwi-managedHealthy Rivers: Plan for Change/Wai Ora: HeRautaki Whakapaipai project.

Some 235 stakeholders attended a recent day-longworkshop at Mystery Creek, while a total of 245people came to five community workshops. Another561 people responded to an online survey by therecent cutoff date.

“The turnout and survey participation has been areflection of the strong interest in the project’s work,”said Bill Wasley, the independent chair of the multi-sector Collaborative Stakeholder Group (CSG), whichwill next year come up with a recommended regionalplan change to help protect the rivers.

“We’ve also been seeing different sector andindustry groups talking amongst themselves to helpdevelop their views on the best way ahead.”

Feedback and comments provided by the publicand other parties will be analysed by the CSG as itdevelops a recommended plan change.■ More information fromwww.waikatoregion.govt.nz/healthyrivers

Truck V car in KihikihiTC191115DT06

EMERGENCYservices were calledto a potentiallyhorrific crash inKihikihi mid-morning yesterdayinvolving a truckand car.At the time of goingto press Police werenot able to releaseany informationabout the crash, which occurred inLyon Street, but itappeared no-onewas seriously hurt. There was minordamage to the truckand a StateHighway sign — thecar fared muchworse, althoughwas still able to bedriven from theroadside.

Officers nab smash and grab crimsIt was a case of offenders

being in the wrong place andofficers being there at the righttime that saw both a driverand passenger charged withdriving and drug offences inHamilton.

Shift Manager, SergeantWayne Shanks said thingsbegan shortly after 11.30pmMonday with a report of a ramraid at Te Awamutu’s SuperService Station where thievesin a light coloured stationwagon made off with cigarettesand tobacco, fleeing north to-wards Hamilton.

“Responding units werelooking for that light colouredvehicle when a white HoldenCommodore station wagon ap-proached them near the inter-section of Airport Rd and SH3.As they attempted to stop it,the female driver hasattempted to flee Police atspeed.

“The fleeing driver waspursued by Police under thedirection of the Northern Com-munications Centre before thecar was stopped with the helpof road spikes on Hamilton’sMill St.”

Mr Shanks said as a resultof the behaviour of the car’soccupants as it was beingpursued, and information pro-vided by them after their ar-rest, an unusual combinationof charges have been laid.

“Both the 21-year-old fe-male driver of the car and the35-year-old male front seat pas-senger have been charged withdriving, methamphetaminepossession and demandingwith menace charges while themale also faces charges ofresisting Police and drivingwhile disqualified third or sub-

sequent offence.“It appears at various

points while the pair wereattempting to avoid capturethe male in the front passengerseat has taken over thesteering of the vehicle, behavi-our that we would describesimply as reckless in terms oftheir own and other roadusers’ safety.”

Mr Shanks saidinvestigators were continuingto follow lines of inquiry inrelation to the unrelated TeAwamutu service stationburglary.

FINAL PUSH: Downer contractors prepare Alexandra Street outside Te Awamutu College for new seal.

Final stage of majorproject under way

Work has begun on sealing TeAwamutu’s Alexandra Street, the final stage in the upgradeproject.

The sealing work will takeseveral weeks and is being donein small sections to minimisetraffic delays as well as disrup-tion to residents and businesses.

The underground work isalmost complete, with newwater and wastewater pipes nowlaid down most of Alexandra

Street from Tawhiao Street tothe railway crossing outsideFonterra, said Waipa DistrictCouncil service delivery mana-ger Barry Bergin.

‘‘We are pleased with theresult of the work to lay thepipes, and now we are askingresidents and businesses to bearwith us as we enter the last stageof this major project,’’ MrBergin said.

The cost of the $2 million

upgrade has been reduced bycombining the water servicesworks with the road reconstruc-tion.

Sealing work has begun out-side Te Awamutu College to takeadvantage of the reduced schooltraffic during the holidays. Thesection outside Fonterra will bedone last to coincide with thefactory’s quieter period.

There will be some timeswhen homeowners and busi-

nesses face restricted access, and the contractor, Downer isworking with those affected totry and keep disruption to aminimum. Traffic delays arepossible and detours away fromAlexandra Street may also beused during this phase of work.

‘‘I’d like to thank the resi-dents, businesses and motoristsfor their ongoing patience as wec o m p l et e t h is i m p o r t a n tupgrade work,’’ Mr Bergin said.

Lap of luxury with extras

TC191115DT01GOLF View B&B co-owner Robyn Morgan in the ensuite guest room.

Relax. Unwind. Enjoy. That is themotto for a new Bed and Breakfastoperation run by the mother anddaughter team of Robyn Morgan andMichelle Hamilton.

The pair run Golf View B&B, pur-chased about five months ago as theirnew home and business. It was pre-viously The Links B&B.

Ms Morgan says she and her daugh-ter had talked for some years aboutrunning a B&B, but it was just this yearwhen it became a possibility when sheretired.

Ms Morgan is from Tauranga. Sheworked for the Police for 16 years, thenhad a brief stint in Australia helping ayounger daughter before moving backto New Zealand.

Ms Hamilton was living in Cam-bridge, working as a specialist teacherwith children who for various reasonscannot attend school.

The pair were looking to set up theirB&B in Cambridge, but when the GolfRoad property came up for sale theywere hooked.

Ms Hamilton still maintains herteaching job — she covers the greaterWaikato, visiting children in hospitalsand homes, while Mum takes care ofthe day-to-day running of the B&B.

Ms Morgan says their aim is to makeguests feel special. “We care aboutthem and we want them to know it.”

Keen to stamp their own mark onthe business, the women visit all thelocal markets and produce fairs to buylocal produce — sauces, pickles, jams, chutneys, lavender products - for visi-tors.

Ms Morgan also checks out local andnearby eateries, businesses andattractions and recommends the best tomake sure visitors have plenty to doand remember while they stay in TeAwamutu.

And true to their motto, the B&Boffers the space, facilities and peacediscerning travellers demand, right onthe doorstep of Te Awamutu GolfCourse.

The large room can be configuredwith queen bed for a couple, or a singleadded for twin or a couple and singleaccommodation.

Guests have their own en suitebathroom and a walk-in wardrobe withplenty of storage, plus fridge andfacilities to make tea, coffee and asnack.

The women purchased the highestquality bed and bedding to add to theluxury for guests.

A substantial, quality breakfast isthe second important ingredient of the

business.“We offer continental or full

breakfasts with plenty of those speciallocal touches.”

Ms Morgan says everyone has beencomplimentary of their cooking.

Part of adding value are the extrasthey are putting together — such asfree access to the driving range and adiscounted round of golf.

Ms Morgan is also qualified as anESOL teacher and is offering a packagewhere foreign guests can also learnbasic English.

■ Golf View B&B is located at 10 Golf Road,ph 871 4339. More information is availableby email [email protected] or theirwebsite www.golfviewbnb.weebly.com

Knowing the soilKnowing the soil has always

been the basis of good farmingbecause the soil is the

foundation of the production system. For modern dairy farmers a good

understanding of their property’ssoils has even more importancebecause the soil is also the basis ofthe effluent treatment system.Knowing the soil conditions and howthey vary during the year can help todeliver very practical benefits includingmaximising utilisation of nutrients indairy effluent and preventingcontamination of ground water andwaterways.

Soil properties such as texture andstructure determine the amount ofwater and nutrients that can enter andbe retained within a particular soil, andthe rate at which excess water goesthrough that soil.

Infiltration rates, water retention, drainage characteristics andconsequent leaching losses of nutrientsin effluent are strongly dependent onthese properties, and they vary overtime as a result of weather and farmingactivities

The risk of surface runoff will besignificant if application is not matchedto infiltration rates or if irrigating on toalready saturated soils.

Treading damage during grazing, especially in wet conditions, can affectthe effluent infiltration rate.

So it is best to take extra care withwinter grazing in your effluent area, andavoid irrigating a paddock that has beendamaged until the soil recovers.

If in doubt, dig a hole beforeirrigating and check whether the soil isloose and open or dense and

compacted. One factor to be wary of regarding

runoff is that suspended solids in farmdairy effluent can accumulate on andjust below the soil surface, creating anorganic layer that temporarily acts as asurface coating.

Although infiltration rates are thenreduced to very low levels the effect isgenerally transient lasting about acouple of days.

Using low application rateequipment will help to reduce this risk.

Once again you can check this bydigging a hole and having a close look atthe soil condition.

Another issue is that relatively drysoil contains large pores open at thesurface.

When irrigating in these conditions, effluent can be rapidly transportedbelow the root zone through aphenomenon known as “bypass flow”.

This type of bypass flow canparticularly occur in soils that undergoshrinkage and fissuring during drying, especially when these soils have beenpreviously compacted by treading.

High leaching losses of nutrients canresult from this.

That’s one reason why the RegionalCouncil has rules limiting effluent

application depths.Farmers should therefore protect

soils from grazing damage in wetconditions, especially in the effluentblock, and check the soil conditionby digging a few holes as the effluentirrigation season begins.

Then you can schedule effluentirrigation to suit soil and climaticconditions.

To achieve this, storage facilitieswith enough capacity are needed.

Minimise the risks of drainage andrunoff by applying small depths ofeffluent.

Irrigators with low application rateswill help reduce these risks.

There are some important rules tofollow on land application of farm dairyeffluent:

• Untreated effluent should not bedischarged or allowed to run off intoany drain, stream or river.

• Effluent ponds, storage facilities, feed pads and stand-off pads must besealed to prevent seepage.

• Feed pads and stand-off pads mustbe at least 20 metres away from surfacewater.

• Irrigation must not exceed a depthof 25 millimetres per application orresult in more than 150 kilograms ofnitrogen being applied per hectare peryear.

Effluent must not pond on the landsurface, or create odour or nuisanceoutside a property’s boundary.

In my experience, farmers havebeen taking a real interest inunderstanding their soils more to helpthem manage effluent better.

We all win if they’re successful atthat.

Photos ofregion’ssoldiersneeded

The Pirongia CommunityAssociation is funding a panel to bemounted in the Pirongia MemorialHall, providing information aboutthe men listed on the Pirongia Roll ofHonour who died on military servicein WWI.

Research on these men has beenundertaken by members of thePirongia Heritage Centre, who arenow gathering photographs to in-clude on the panel.

They still require photographs ofeight servicemen: Hugh ThomasCorcoran of Harapepe, Gilbert JohnJohnston who farmed near Pirongia,Robert Charles Linton of Mangapiko,Kenneth McKinnon of Te Rore andKaipaki, Robert Roderick McKinnonfrom Te Rore who was in theCanadian Infantry, Robert McNaulof Paterangi, Albert Ernest Mogfordof Puketotara, and Horima Rangi, also known as HorimaRangitakaroro of Otorohanga.

The Heritage Centre would like toscan the photographs to honour themen on the panel. It does not requirethe photographs to be donated.

While photos of men in uniformwould be preferred, others in civilianattire are quite acceptable.

■ Anyone who has a photograph of anyof these men or knows where one existsis asked to contact Alan Hall ph 8728088, email [email protected]

Tales from the past

TC191115SP09AGunner Murdoch McKinnon

Work to findand identifyimages ofPirongia’sWWI fallen isextensive andtime-consumi-ng, and suc-cesses are cele-brated.

A case inpoint is theimage of Gun-ner MurdochMcKinnon.Hamilton CityLibrary has avery clear stu-dio photograph of a WWIserviceman printed from aglass plate negative with thename ‘McKinnon’ scratchedon the margin of the glassplate.

Seven men namedMcKinnon — two sets ofcousins from Te Rore beforeone family moved toKaipaki — served in the1914-19 war and tragically, six of them were killed.

However, initially therewas no evidence that thesoldier in the HamiltonLibrary photograph was amember of that family.

Nevertheless, the badgesof the serviceman showedthat he was in the NZ FieldArtillery, and examinationof military records revealedthat of the seven Te RoreMcKinnons, only MurdochAngus McKinnon served inthe Field Artillery.

An elderly McKinnonfamily member wascontacted to see if she hadseen the photograph in thepast, but although she

thought she could see afamily likeness, the picturewas new to her and she saidthat she had never seen anyfamily photographs.

The breakthrough camewhen a photograph wasdiscovered in the AucklandWeekly News of 30 May 1918that included a small photo-graph labelled “Gnr M. A.MacKinnon of Kaipaki, killed in action”.

Although of poorer qual-ity, the person in that photois unmistakably similar inappearance.

The image could havebeen clipped from the samephotograph.

The researchers are nowconvinced that despite thevaried spelling of his name, the Hamilton LibraryPhotograph is of GunnerMurdoch McKinnon.

He was 21 years oldwhen he was killed in actionin March 1918. His brothersRod and Malcolm in theOtago and Wellington Infan-try Regiments had also beenkilled in action in separateincidents on July 31 andAugust 1, 1917.

Only Grant, the fourthbrother who served in theAuckland Mounted Riflesand was twice wounded, survived the war.
