New loos good for lake environmentThe new toilet block at Lake
Ngaroto is up and running, replacing the old toilet blockwhich is now closed.
The old toilets needed to bereplaced after the effluent field
on the septic tank reached theend of its life.
Along with the car parkupgrade, Waipa District Coun-cil built the new toilets at therowing club end of the reserve
to be more accessible to users.Community facilities managerBruce Airey says the newtoilets use a dry vault system.
“Waste is held in a sealedvault under the toilets and
pumped out on regularly,” hesays. “The system is moreenvironmentally friendly asall waste is trucked off sitewhere it is sent to a treatmentplant.”

Please don’t feed the ducksWaipa District Council is
asking people to stop feedingthe ducks in Te Awamutu’sMemorial Park.
Council staff say the num-ber of ducks living at the parkhas significantly increasedover recent years.
The massive increase induck numbers had createdconcerns around pollution andpublic health and complaintshad been lodged with theCouncil.
Parks and reserves teamleader Max Ward said peoplehad been feeding ducks atMemorial Park and other Wai-pa parks for years.
While bread was known tobe unhealthy for ducks, feed-ing them had seemed rela-tively harmless, he said.
But in Memorial Park somepeople had been spotted feed-ing the ducks specially pur-chased grain.
“We’re not talking aboutthe odd scrap of bread — this ismuch more than that,” he says.
“We’ve got people provid-ing them a free meal every dayand it’s now got to the pointwhere it’s unsanitary.”
“The sheer number ofducks attracted by the foodmeans they are polluting the
water, fouling the walkwaysand making it difficult to es-tablish gardens and lawns.
“And the food meant for theducks is also providing asmorgasbord for rats, andfrankly, rats are last thing wewant to attract to any publicpark.”
Mr Ward said ducks werewild birds and quite capable of
collecting their own food.“Feeding them does them
no favours,” he said.“It means the ducks are
now becoming dependent onhumans.
“And the ready supply offood is attracting more ducksto the park as well as mice andrates. They, in turn, are breed-ing and populations are get-
ting out of control.”Councils have an obligation
by law to maintain publicplaces and keep them healthy,he said.
So far, Memorial Park in TeAwamutu was the only one ofCouncil’s five urban parkswith open water where theduck population had becomean issue.
“We’re not out to ruin any-one’s fun or stop young kidsfrom enjoying the wildlife. Butfeeding the ducks has tippedthe balance in that particularpark.
“We need to encourageducks to find their own foodand by doing so, they willnaturally disperse and ducknumbers will return to normallevels.”
Mr Ward said the Councilhad no plans to be heavy-handed and hoped askingpeople to stop feeding the birdswould be enough.
A letter alerting local resi-dents to the issue had also beensent, he said.
“We’ll be putting up somesigns and keeping an eye onthe park.
“But we’re hopeful the pub-lic will do the right thing and itwill all go back to normal.”

Family proud of soldier’s history
TC031017JUDSON1JUDSON family, from left: David, Dylan, Janice (Boyd) and Peter at the Judson Barracks at LintonMilitary Camp.
TC031017JUDSON2SECOND Lieutenant Reginald Judson's medals, his portrait andthe returned sword.
Te Awamutu RSA Club mem-ber Peter Judson is very proudof his grandfather, and rightlyso.
Sergeant Reginald Judsonwas one of the most highly-decorated New Zealand soldiersof World War I.
In the space of only threemonths in 1918 he won not onlythe Military Medal and the Dis-tinguished Conduct Medal, butalso the highest award, the Vic-toria Cross.
His VC was earned by hissingle-handedly attacking sev-eral German machine-gun postswhich were slowing the NewZealanders’ advance at theBattle of Bapaume.
Of course, all this is part ofthe Judson family history with
an unwanted but, for a shorttime, anguished period whenthey learned that Judson’s VCwas amongst those stolen fromthe Army Museum. Thankfullythe medals were located andreturned.
However, recently the familylearned that their forebear’sname is commemorated atLinton Military Camp where thebarracks blocks are all namedafter VC winners.
Each intake of cadets has tolearn the history of the manwhose name is on their blockand to present the story to all theother cadets.
Mr Judson, his son David, grandson Dylan and sisterJanice Boyd made a trip toLinton Camp to see the marker
stone which honours their not-able forefather.
There is an interesting side-story to all this.
Towards the end of the warReginald Judson was com-missioned as a second lieuten-ant and, as such, was given an
officer’s dress sword.Much later in New Zealand he
gave it to a friend who had donehim a big favour.
When NZ Post issued the VCcommemorative stamps, with allthe associated publicity, thestory of the sword was published
in an article in the New ZealandHerald.
The recipient saw it andimmediately arranged to returnthe sword to the family and it isnow in the possession of SecondLieutenant Judson’s great-greatgrandson Dylan.

Mrs Higgins’ parentsJames and Alice Kenyonlived somewhere in thedistrict in the late 1930sand early to mid 1940s.
Her father worked atTokanui Hospital and MrsHiggins recalls her mothersaying they lived betweenthe hospital and the rail-way tracks — but she hasno idea exactly where.
Mrs Higgins was bornin New Zealand, but haslittle recollection of herearly years before the fam-ily moved home to the UK.
Now she is keen to findout more about her and herfamily’s time in New Zea-land.
She says her fatherregaled her with stories ofNew Zealand all throughher childhood, and in thenext few months heryounger brother and hiswife, and then her grand-daughter, are visiting ourshores, so she is keen toknow more.
Mrs Higgins is alsokeen to find anyone whocan trace a lady by thename of Maud Brown — orher family.
She says Maudbefriended her parents andshe was often talked about.
Mrs Higgins says she
finds it very sad that shehas no idea of her parents’life before they returned toEngland.
“After all these years itwould be wonderful if any-one can fill in the gaps ofmy parents time in your

Employeesneed workcontracts
The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) iscalling on all Te Awamutu employers tomake sure they understand obligations totheir staff.
Jessica Brown of CAB says employersare breaking the law by denying workerstheir entitlement to a written employ-ment agreement.
“When there is no written employ-ment agreement, employees are vulner-able to being treated badly,” she says.
“People are dependent on keepingtheir jobs to feed their families and payrent.”
Mrs Brown says employees can bereluctant to rock the boat even if theyknow their employer is doing somethingwrong.
“If you don’t know what’s legallyrequired of you as an employer, it’simportant to find out.”
The CAB has some tips that can helpyou comply with the law and avoidgetting a fine from the Labour Inspector-ate.■ You must agree to and sign an employ-ment agreement with every employeebefore they start work.■ Employees have a right to have a copyof their employment agreement.■ Young people and people who are newto New Zealand have the same rights asanyone else.■ You can’t change employee’s hours ortheir role without their agreement.■ Visit eab.business.govt.nz to use theemployment agreement builder tool andlearn about minimum rights for em-ployees.

than New ZealandNational FieldaysSociety scholarshipwinner ShannonHunter. The University of
Waikato mastersstudent received the$22,000 Sir DonLlewellyn Scholarshipin June, awarded yearlyto a student undertak-ing research with afocus on advancing theagricultural sector. The scholarship has
assisted Miss Hunter’sresearch to establish
whether the virus thatcauses root rot in NewZealand avocadoorchards is developing
resistance to phosphite, which is commonlyused to treat dieback. The research is the
first of its kind in NewZealand and wasprompted by studies inAustralia and SouthAfrica that indicatedsome strains of the soilborne mould that leadsto root rot, Phyto-phthora cinnamomi, had increased resist-ance to the treatment.Miss Hunter has
developed a method oftesting soil samplesfrom New Zealandorchards using an opti-cal density plate scan-ner. Thismethod allowsher to save time andresources in herresearch.
She will apply thissame method to otherstrains of Phytophthoracinnamomi from avo-cado orchards in theUnited States when shetravels to the Univers-ity of Californiacampuses in Berkeleyand Riverside thismonth. Miss Hunterhopes her research willspark further researchinto fungicide resist-ance.

Kiwi riders win a test of enduranceTe Awamutu duo integral part of triumphant mini marathon team

BY COLIN THORSEN
A team of four New Zea-landers, including Te Awa-mutu’s Nadine Barker and JennyChandler, won the 120kmShahzada Memorial EnduranceRide in Australia.
The Shahzada marathon ridehas taken place in the remotehistoric town of St Albans NSWfor the past 38 years.
It is named after a famous
Arabian stallion, Shahzada. The main event is contested
over 400km in five days.“It is seen as a true test of a
horse’s endurance,” said Barker.“Our team, Bullios Kiwis,
won the mini marathoncontested by 10 teams of fourriders. We all rode BullioArabians other than Ashley Coleof Raetahi who has her horsebased in Australia.”
The Bullios Kiwis took out the
Sillona Endurance Arabians Tro-phy.
Barker said it was a verychallenging course, throughbush, up and down large rockymountains and farm land.
“Ashley Cole and I cameacross a bad accident. The horsewas fine but the rider had to behelicoptered out of the bush.”
The ride comprised threeloops over three days, 58km,24km and 38km, and was judged
on a combination of fastest timeand lowest heart rate.
There were vet checks at thebeginning and end of each loop. The heart rates must be under 60beats per minute.
Barker finished in 11 hours 56minutes. Her mount, BradaliNajmul Fi Samar, had an aver-age heart rate of 36 beats perminute.
Her team-mates’ finishingtimes and their horses’ average
heart rates were Jenny Chandler13.54, Cedar Ridge Monarch 39bpm; Teresa Birkett (Taumaru-nui) 13.18, Cedar Ridge Lyric 41bpm; Cole 11.56, Kahuna Moon 43bpm.
It was the second trip acrossthe Tasman in quick successionfor Barker. She was a member ofa New Zealand team thatcontested the 160km Tom QuiltyGold Cup event at Wirrina Covein Adelaide.
ANOTHERBITE OFTHE APPLENew York is well known the world over, but there’s more to the city than justManhattan and Brooklyn. Stephanie Holmesfinds out what the Big Apple’s other threeboroughs have to offer.
The BronxWhy it’s famous: It’s the home of the New York Yankeesand the New York Botanical Garden, and is regarded as thebirthplace of hip-hop. The northernmost of the five boroughs, about a quarter of the Bronx’s area is open space, includingWoodlawn Cemetery and Bronx Zoo.What to see: The Bronx Museum of the Arts specialises incontemporary art from diverse cultural backgrounds. It’s open Wednesdays to Sundays and admission is free.
At Bronx Zoo, take on the Treetop Adventure, a ziplinethat takes you 120m across the Bronx River, 15m in the air, then walk the aerial adventure course.
Visit Wave Hill public gardens and cultural centre in thespring to see a carpet of wildflowers; or Poe Cottage, theformer home of poet Edgar Allen Poe, built in 1812 andlovingly restored.
There are more than 400 Art Deco buildings in theborough, and it’s also home to the Bronx Wall of Fame,a 3.2km strip of the Grand Concourse paying tribute tofamous residents.
Thanks to the borough’s long history of immigration, you’llfind incredible Italian food on Arthur Avenue - dubbed thereal Little Italy - from pizzerias to delis to fine dining.Book a restaurant, or take a walking tour to sample the bestof everything. You’ll also find great West Indian, Caribbean,Ghanaian, Nigerian and Southeast Asian food, as well asfresh seafood at City Island, a seaside suburb reminiscentof New England.
And no visit to the Bronx would be complete withouttickets to a Yankees game. The season usually runs fromApril to October.Where to stay: The 60-room Opera House Hotel was theBronx’s first boutique hotel, transforming an old theatrevenue that once saw performances from the likes ofGeorge Burns and Harry Houdini. operahousehotel.com
QueensWhy it’s famous: Home of the New York Mets and theUS Open, JFK and LaGuardia airports, Queens is also thelocation of Silvercup Studios, where TV shows like Sex andthe City, The Sopranos, Mad Men and 30 Rock were filmed.Weirdly, not Friends though; the New York-set show wasactually filmed at Warner Bros Studios in California. What to see: The Museum of the Moving Image boaststhe largest collection of moving image artefacts in the US.As well as having permanent exhibitions, it also screenshundreds of films every year. The main exhibition is theinteractive Behind the Screen, in which visitors can learnwhat it’s like to make moving images. New York Hall ofScience is another “hands-on” experience, with more than450 interactive exhibits, great for families.
MoMA PS1, one of the oldest and largest non-profitcontemporary art institutions in the US, exhibits work from
emerging artists and groundbreaking works from establishedones. The borough is also home to the Socrates SculpturePark, an internationally renowned outdoor museum andpark, with walks along the East River giving views back toManhattan.
The Queens Museum has an acclaimed collection ofTiffany glass, as well as a three-dimensional map of NewYork, first constructed in 1939 and updated regularly as thecity grows and changes.
Visit Fort Totten Park, a preserved Civil War fortress, forwinter bird-watching and Halloween haunted house tours orsummer swimming and canoeing.
Summer is also a great time for a daytrip to RockawayBeach, a family-friendly stretch of sand with outdoor barsand restaurants, surf shops and a boardwalk.
Jazz fans should visit The Louis Armstrong HouseMuseum, set up in the musician’s old home in Corona andfull of artefacts, records and personal papers from Louisand his wife, Lucille.Where to stay: You’ll find a plethora of budget airporthotels in the area, but for something a little more stylish, trythe Paper Factory Hotel. Built in 1939 as a - you guessedit - paper factory, there are now 123 industrial loft-styleguestrooms, as well as a high-end restaurant, bar, coffeeshop and outdoor terrace. paperfactoryhotel.com
Staten IslandWhy it’s famous: The borough is packed with museums, beaches and historic landmarks. The best part is, it’s freeto get there from Manhattan - take a ferry from the WhitehallTerminal in Lower Manhattan. This is a good way to see theStatue of Liberty without paying for the boat ride. What to see: In the late 1800s, South Beach and MidlandBeach were busy resort towns, and there’s still a lot to
attract visitors today.South Beach is great for families, with a bike-friendly
boardwalk, parks, baseball fields, a skate park andrestaurants, while Midland has the Fantasy ShoreAmusement Park, suitable for small children. Keen anglersshould grab a spot on Midland Beach Fishing Pier, thelargest steel and concrete recreational pier on the AtlanticOcean, which is great for all levels of fishing expertise.
The eclectic Snug Harbor Cultural Center and BotanicalGarden has a range of attractions among its 23 historicalbuildings, including the Staten Island Museum, theNewhouse Center for Contemporary Art, the Noble MaritimeCollection, the Staten Island Children’s Museum, and aHeritage Farm that hosts a seasonal Saturday farmers’market. There are nine botanical gardens on site, including a Chinese garden inspired by the Ming Dynasty, and a Tuscan garden with lemon and olive trees.
To get a glimpse of life as it would have been in the17th century, visit the Alice Austen House Museum, one ofNYC’s oldest homes. Austen, a photographer, lived therein the late 1800s and early 1900s and the museum hasdisplays of her work capturing local daily life.
You can also visit Historic Richmond Town, a living historyvillage with restored colonial buildings, including homes, ageneral store and courthouse, as well as a museum tellingthe history of American life since the 1700s.
Fort Wadsworth is another historic landmark. The militaryfort has a network of tunnels and fortifications, and wasused as a barracks during the American Civil War. It’s now anational park where rangers offer guided tours.Where to stay: There’s not an abundance of hotels onStaten Island, so your best bet is to pop over on the freeferry for a day trip. Ferries run at regular intervals,24 hours a day (except on public holidays, when they runfrom 7am-11pm). siferry.com
