Changes for Ford - hot Aurion - Evo torqueAussie spies have been working

overtime to get a glimpse of the next generation Ford Falcon Orion.

Testing is currently underway on the 2008 model, including some highway testing with the usual attempts to camoufl age the new look.

Development of the new model is one of the major changes for Ford Australia over coming years.

Hot on the heels of the announcement of the discontinuation of the Straight Six engine in favour of the American sourced V6 by 2010 is news that the ageing Canadian made 5.4 litre V8 is to be replaced by the hi-tech Jaguar 5.0 litre V8, also in 2010.

There is also speculation 2010 will see the introduction of the fi rst diesel engine to the Falcon and Territory, in the form of a 2.7 litre powerplant already in use in Europe.

The new Jaguar V8 will be available in nat-urally aspirated form and with a supercharger. The basic bottom line is 375kW.

HOT TOYOTAThe Toyota Racing Development Aurion

has been seen across the Tasman and is im-pressive. Big question is are we getting any here?

The range comprises two model grades - the 3500S (Sports) and 3500SL (Sports Luxury). Both come with a supercharged 3.5 litre V6 engine producing 241kW and

400Nm at 4000rpm, mated to a six-speed automatic trans-mission with sequential shift. They are still front wheel drive.

Apart from the engine, both models have TRD unique sports suspension, TRD performance brakes, TRD unique

19-inch alloy wheels with 245/35ZR19 Dunlop Sport Maxx performance tyres, TRD unique engine cover and TRD sports exhaust system with integrated exhaust outlets.

LET’S TORQUE EVO XLeaked information from Mitsubishi

reveals torque for the Lancer Evo X, which will be launched at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, is up a massive 67Nm on the current model.

With an expected 206kW of power, but 422Nm of torque, the Evo X will be much anticipated when it is released here next year.

2008 Ford Falcon Orion - maybe.

engined pas-senger cars are not new to the Ford empire - just to us down-under.

The 2.0 litre unit used in Australia is co-de-veloped by PSA Peugeot Citroën and has 100kW of power and 320Nm of torque, as well as economy of 5.6L/100km.

As well as the Focus and Ford Transit Connect, the unit is also found in a number of other vehicles, including the Citroën C4 Picasso and European Mini Cooper D.

Other ver-sions of diesels

used in Fords also appear in the X-Type Jaguar (2.2 litre), LX1 London Taxi (2.4 litre), Peugeot 607 (2.7 litre V6) and Range Rover Sport (3.6 litre V8) - to name but a few.

Diesel power option for Ford Focus WagonBy Dean Taylor

Ford New Zealand’s venture into diesel power for a passenger

vehicle has just one option at present, the Focus Wagon.

Fairview Motors teed up my test drive in the Focus - and I was immediately im-pressed with the look, fi nish and size of the Wagon.

It seems the Focus has grown up a bit - and has the defi nite European Ford look that it shares with big brother Mondeo.

So the Focus wagon is quite a sizeable vehicle, with a good amount of room front and back - and a really nice stance.

I like the modern wedge

look and the nice wide, low feel to the vehicle.

The wagon comes with two engine choices - the conventional 2.0 litre Du-ratec DOHC petrol engine and the 1.8 litre Duratorq SOHC TDCi diesel.

The petrol version pro-duces 107kW and 185Nm and drives through a four speed automatic.

The diesel makes just 85kW, but with 300Nm of torque and a fi ve speed manual, it isn’t lacking in get-up-and-go.

In Australia they have the Focus Five Door Hatch with a 2.0 litre Duratorq diesel that is wowing critics, so maybe in time to come the

diesel option will get even better.

But back to my Wagon - a well featured, grunty, good sized family vehicle that uses less than six litres of fuel per 100km.

For a start the fuel cost will be about half that of petrol - that is good news straight away because it doesn’t require any real change in driving habits to achieve that saving.

The Duratorq is also cleaner burning than the petrol, and with a full tank, should take you about 1000km before you need to fuel up.

On the road the Focus was a good drive. It is stable, even without any weight in the back, and rides and handles well on its 16” wheels.

Interior is tidy and easy

to operate - once again you have to get used to Euro-pean stalk controls.

It has heaps of features, including cruise control, front and side airbags, ABS

and EBD brake systems.Designers had also uti-

lised any spare space for

all-important interior storage - nicely complementing the very good cargo storage.

Truckie on a car licenceBy Dean Taylor

I may have once said to the boys at Watson Haworth Motors ‘I’ll

test drive anything’.So here I am writing about

a 1997 Isuzu Elf 250 Tip-per ‘dump truck’.

A yard full of saloons, hatches, vans and Europeans - and I’m in a dumper.

However, this little beast has potential - even I can see that.

For a start it can driven on a car licence up to 4500kg - so for this vehicle that means about a tonne load.

Inside it is a three seater, with electric windows, stereo, air con and fairly conven-tional layout. It’s not much different from some vans I’ve driven.

The Isuzu has a 4.6 litre, four cylinder OHC diesel engine and fi ve speed man-ual box. It makes 89kW and 325Nm and empty it hauls along the road very nicely. I don’t think a tonne or two would make a great deal of difference on smallish jobs this would be suited to.

It’s pretty easy to manoeu-vre, needing just 5.5 metres to U-turn. And to top it off it has the hydraulic hoist and

two stage tailgate, for either spreading or dumping.

All this for under $19,000 plus ORC if you talk nice.

Restoring vehicles of yesteryear requires passion and patienceDavid Nordell might restore cars as a busi-

ness, but he says if you don’t have passion and pride in what you do, it isn’t worth

doing.Nordell Restorations is an understated operation

producing amazingly high quality workmanship on some of the most beautiful cars made.

People who visit his workshop, such as members of Te Awamutu Motor Vehicle Enthusiasts Group recently, are amazed at what this man does.

Their trip was to view the very rare 1926 Wills Sainte Claire Cabriolet Roadster. About 70 to 80 Wills are known to exist in America, but only three have this Phillips coach built body.

The car was rebuilt for an American client. It is the second Mr Nordell has built for the same client, the fi rst was a 1927 336 Packard which also had a body by Phillips Coach.

Mr Nordell is trained as an engineer, fi tter/turner

and toolmaker. Most recently he spent six years working for Wallace McNair ’s Straight 8 Resto-rations in Hamilton. It was here he worked under contract on the Packard.

Mr Nordell credits Mr McNair with giving him a good grounding in the restoration business.

Jobs such as the Wills require patience, planning and a great deal of skills.

Mr Nordell says he has to manufacture many of the parts from drawings and his imagination, build-ing them in period fashion to match the age of the vehicle.

He says old cars were put together by hand by a team of people, and often no two sides were ever the same internally.

Mr Nordell undertakes everything except upholstery and paint.

Restoring the Wills ready for paint, interior and mechanical refi tting back in the States meant

fabricating wood and metal parts and rebuilding the car to more fully resemble the original vehicle.

At present his workshop has an array of Rileys, one being his own project and two belonging to another client.

Mr Nordell says the painstaking work to build cars of this quality is more than most people want to undertake - but he is keen to fi nd anyone else out there like him. He says he has two to three years work ahead of him on his own, so if anyone has the skills and thinks they could work for him, he would

like to hear from them on 871 3334.

Meanwhile he contin-ues on the 1922 Riley All Seasons

Tourer - formerly a New Plymouth car now in the hands of a Hamilton owner. Mr Nordell says she is getting a general service for a vintage car as she has been off the road since 1995.

This entails rebuilding running gear such as the brakes, steering and ball joints etc. and giving the engine the once over, plus a new set of rings and valve seats. He says this will see her back on the road while he works on the owner ’s other, more diffi cult project.

Mr Nordell has a third Riley in the workshop - his own. He says the Riley story is as interest-ing as the cars (see page 10).

Next long term project is a Bugatti Type 43 (example left) which is enroute from Switzerland - sure to be another work of art from Nordell Restorations.

C. Harold Will (1878 - 1940) began his career with Henry Ford, where metallurgy was his speciality. Wills invented Vanadium steel for the production of the Model T. He was also a designer and is credited with designing the script ‘Ford Blue Oval’. Wills left Ford with a sizeable severance package of more than $1.5 million and established his own car company in Marysville.

The fi rst Wills Sainte Claire rolled off the assembly line in 1921. Production was delayed due to metallurgy issues surrounding the use of molybdenum in castings, which Wills insisted be used in the produc-tion of the car in order to ensure its durability. Once production got underway most of Wills’ executive staff abandoned him because he was prone to shut the assembly line down

if a new and innovative method occurred to him. After going into receiver-ship that year, the com-pany was refi nanced by a group of Boston bankers in 1923.

Wills cars featured either innovative V8 or

inline-6 cylinder overhead cam en-gines, but unable to sustain volume suffi cient to make a profi t, the fac-tory closed in 1927. He was later involved in the development of the front wheel drive Ruxton, and went on to work for Chrysler, the com-pany which eventually purchased his factory.

In 1967 the American Automo-tive Hall of Fame was established. In that fi rst year Wills’ two former bosses Henry Ford and Walter P. Chrysler were inducted. Just three years later C. Harold Wills joined them as an inductee.

Beefed up second generation Highlander

By Dean Taylor

Toyota has beefed up the second generation Highlander with a

bigger engine and improved performance, plus given it a bolder, bulkier look.

Waikato Toyota Te Awamutu provided the 2WD version for the test drive and the Hamilton branch the lovely black 4WD Limited.

The original was based on the Lexus RX330. It had a 3.3 litre V6 with about 170kW of power and 330Nm of torque.

The new release can be viewed as the wagon version of the Camry or Aurion. They share a number of fea-tures, including the fantastic 3.5 litre V6 which produces 201kW and 337Nm. Drive

is through a fi ve speed auto-matic, with sequential manual control, to either the front wheels of the 2WD or all wheels on the 4WD and 4WD Limited. The latter are full time 4WD models.

The layout of the High-lander leans more towards being a great family, people mover wagon than a work

horse, although it can do the latter if required.

All variants are seven seat-ers, with clever arrangements of seats and consols and armrests to provide a variety of confi gurations.

Naturally rear seats fold to provide maximum storage abilities.

The 2WD and 4WD

come standard on 17” al-loys, while the Limited has 19” wheels. Mine actually had 20” wheels fi tted, and I have to say it was a good look and probably helped the drive.

With all the power, 2WD could be a handful. It was only slightly wet when I drove it, but I could have

broken several ‘boy racer ’ rules without trying too hard. The Limited was excellent - the power went straight to the road, so she could really get going.

It felt better on the road as well, a good ride and good in corners and under brakes. But that is in comparison to something that was already

very good on the road. The Highlander has heaps

of room and, especially in the Limited version with leather, heated seats, leather steering wheel and upgraded stereo and controls, is a pleasure to drive.

All models have plenty of crash safety features, plus driver assistance to avoid

crashing, such as ABS, BA, EBD, traction control and hill start assist. The 4WD models also have Down-hill Assist Control.

The petrol V6 meets Euro 4 emission control standards and with 11 to 12 litres/100km is reasonably economic for the size of the vehicle.

Indulging rally passion

The English made Riley motorcar would never have existed if it weren’t for three determined

brothers and a sympathetic mother. The Riley company was making

bicycles in the late 1800s, and de-spite success with motorised bikes and trikes, a car designed and hand-built by Percy Riley was never allowed into production by his father, and business owner, William Riley.

So percy, and his brothers Victor and Allan, borrowed £39 off their mother and set up business down the road.

Business boomed, and in 1907 the Riley Engine Company was formed and in 1911 bicycle production halted.

Part of the success was the Riley

invented detachable wheel which other companies were buying for their cars.

Undoubtedly a high point for the company was the Riley 9, produced between 1926 and 1938. And is true Riley fashion it almost never got made because father William didn’t support it.

The prototype was destined for oblivion, until family member Stanley Riley wanted to compete in a hill climb, and looking for a car to drive, chose the ‘9’.

It fl ew up the course and on Monday dealers were inundated with requests for the ‘new’ model and furious Riley hadn’t told them about its release.

It was hurriedly released and became a huge success.

Towards the mid 30s business took a downturn, mainly because Riley of-fered too many choices trying to keep customers happy, and it was eventually sold to Lord Nuffi eld and became part of the empire that grew into BMC. The last ‘real’ Riley is regarded as the 1957 Pathfi nder.1931 Riley 9 Special

Pitstop owner Gary Beckham (left in picture) loves the

sport of rallying - he just can’t afford to participate. What he can do is get paid once a year to be part of the crew for the Japanese Takayama College team which takes part in local and international rallies.

He has been working with the team for 10 years, joining from his previous job with Subaru Technica International.

The highly regarded Takayama College used real rallying experiences as part of its training for automo-tive engineers. Mr Beckham met Mr Ohashi (right) as a student about four years ago, now he teaches at the college and was with this year ’s team in New Zea-land as head mechanic.

They employ semi-pro-fessional drivers, but most of the crew are students.

It is the fi rst year they have competed here, previously Mr Beckham has been to Australia and

Malaysia with the team.He is now crew chief, his

main job being to sort out logistical problems - but he is required to step in if there are serious problems with the car to keep the

team on the road.He says it is a great

organisation to be involved with, and he has made some good friends, plus he gets paid to indulge in the sport once a year.

Our pride and joy...Neil and Lorna Cor-

rin (right) can lay claim to a unique

record in the Te Awamutu Road and Custom Club - the only original car.

The 1937 Chevrolet Master Deluxe - which also featured in the August DriveBy - has been owned by the couple since they were courting in the early 1970’s (below).

Built in Canada with a Fisher body, the ‘37 was in original hands from new until 1963. In that time she covered just 70,446 miles.

She stayed in the family for the next six years - passing to the daughter and son-in-law for the fi rst three years, then to their daughter and son-in-law for the next six.

Mr Corrin purchased the Chevy in 1969. He had known the car most of his life as he lived just down the road from the original owner.

Like the family who took the car from the original owner, Mr Corrin used it as ‘an old hack’.

He drove it to shearing jobs and found her reliable and inexpensive to run and fi x.

During this time he met his future wife, and the couple and their friends had many memorable experiences with the ‘old Chev’.

In 1976 they made the decision to give the ‘37 a major renovation. The body

was taken off the chassis and every part was removed.

By 1980 she was back in original show-room condition.

It was during this time the Corrins became involve in rodding, initially with the Te Kuiti club until a group of about 15 locals founded the Te Awamutu Rod and Custom Club.

So the 1937 Chevrolet became a found-ing car - the last in the 25-year-old club.

Also about this time the Corrins built their fi rst home, and the Chev was the family car for about 18 months, including many family outings - as well as being in demand for wed-dings and school balls.

By 1990 it was time for another rebuild, and this time rodding was in mind.

She was stripped and given fresh paint - but more importantly a Chevrolet 307ci V8, Turbo 350 gearbox, 10 bolt diff, Holden HR front end and Malibu steering

were added. The Corrins were able to

enjoy many more fun years with the Chevy until a third rebuild

was warranted - this time to get her ready for the 2007 PPG/Vero

Classic Cover Street Rod Nationals which the Te Awamutu club hosted at Easter. The three year project saw the old

girl stripped back to bare metal, rust removed, panels refurbished and new

paint applied. Many of the mechanics were renewed or

upgraded, including modern fuel and elec-tronic systems to improve reliability.

The Corrins say these improvements make the Chevy more fun to drive.

Over the years many locals have helped with the car and the couple are grateful for their expertise.

Fellow rodder Rob Kingi did the original wiring, and new electronics has been provided by Nigel Pitcon Auto Electrical. Panel work is by Greg Ryan, paint by Craig O’Hanlon and interior by CH Allen Upholstery. He says the assistance of Bob Owens, another fellow rodder, has also been invaluable.

The Corrins say they have great family memories of this car - and with no intentional of selling - look forward to many more.
