Police are warning the public not to ap-proach Dean Tangaroa Rowlands, who es-caped from a minimum security unit at Waikeria Prison on Friday.
The inmate’s absence was discovered prior to breakfast after inmates had had their cells unlocked for the day.
Rowlands (pictured) has con-nections in the King Country, Waikato and Bay of Plenty areas.
He is described as a Male Caucasian aged 32 years, 178cm tall with a medium to solid build.
“He should not be ap-proached and any sightings should be reported to your nearest police station,” says Detective Sergeant Ross Pat-terson of Te Awamutu Police.

Signal’s property at 161 Flat Road maintained its strong run in Kihikihi Rotary Club’s annual garden competition.
It was judged best Kihikihi garden, ahead of second placed 7 McAndrew Street (Lorraine Frederick and John Tart) and third placed 7 Lyon Street (Rose Kjestrup and Lyle Harvey).
Best Kept Street was once again Herbert Street.
Prizewinners will receive garden vouchers from Gloria Graydon of Ngaroto Nurseries at a Wednesday night’s Rotary meeting at the Alpha Hotel.
Ear clinic hereThe free mobile ear clinic will
be in this area during Novem-ber.
It will be based at Te Awamutu Primary School on November 10 and Kawhia Pri-mary School on November 29, from 9am-1pm.
Waikato Ear Nurse Suzie Cairns will carry out assess-ments and checks of glue ear, discharging ears and grom-mets. She can also remove wax or foreign bodies from chil-dren’s ears.
For further details contact the Mobile Ear Clinic (021 930 463).
Murder hunt centred on KihikihiWhile Police are not saying too much, it is
obvious they believe the answers to the dis-appearance and suspected murder of former local resident Stephen George will be found in Kihikihi.
A caravan was set up in the town last week and a display featuring a mannequin with clothing similar to what Mr George was wearing on the last days he was seen, Octo-ber 8 and 9.
In the early hours of Sunday, October 9 the Tirohanga farm house where Mr George lived was torched. DNA results from the body found in the house will not be available until later this week.
The display also features a replica of the silver 1993 Nissan Primera Mr George was driving and was set up opposite the Star Tav-ern, where he was drinking with friends on the night he disappeared.
Detective Rob Woolerton of Cambridge Po-lice was on duty again at the caravan on Sat-urday, along with Police district iwi liaison co-ordinator for Waikato, Wayne Panapa.
Mr Woolerton said that Kihikihi people were proving helpful and it was pleasing how many had visited the display.
“We are still particularly interested in sightings of Mr George in the early hours of October 9, or of his car between October 9 and when it was found burned out on Rang-inui Road, which runs off the State Highway between Mangakino and Kihikihi, on October 12.”
Sergeant Panapa, who lived in Kihikihi for 20 years, said the response by Kihikihi resi-
dents to the display had been excellent.“It’s great that people have come forward.
It all helps towards trying to provide some closure for Mr George’s family.”
One person came forward with a new sight-ing of the car at an address in Kihikihi.
Police are also appealing for information
relating to a pack found near the scene of the fi re.
The ex-army pack has the words ‘SPARE 2’ written in pen along a shoulder strap, with the words Jonathon VIL also written on it.
Police can be contacted on 0800 STAR09 (0800 782709)..

Miss Rosetown College quinellaGood friends Danielle Wilson and
Hesta Beal decided to enter this year’s Miss Rosetown together for a bit of a laugh.
Then on Saturday night the pair of College students took out the title and runner-up title respectively.
Danielle, an 18-year-old seventh former sponsored by Mitchell Farm Services, was stunned when her name was called. She had to check with another of the contestants to make sure it was her they had called.
Hesta, her 16-year-old sixth form friend, who was sponsored by Fieten Motor Services, said the pair were more at home in gumboots than high heels and this was one for the farm girls.
Third place went to Miss Te Awamutu I-Site Kristy Southall. She is a 20-year-old Wintec student.
A good crowd turned out to the Miss Rosetown Pageant, part of the Scream Rosetown Festival.
All seven contestants modelled cloth-ing from CBR and Postie Plus for two sections of the competition before ap-pearing in their gowns for the fi nale.
Danielle’s Miss Rosetown title will
also hold special meaning for her grandparents, who are Swiss and live in Switzerland’s ‘Rosetown’ Weggis.
Danielle lived with her grandparents for seven months as a 15-year-old, then visited again in June this year with her
mother. She was there for their an-
nual Rose Festival, which also has a Rose Princess, decided by the most popular girl at
the annual dance.Danielle completes her second-
ary schooling this year and starts the business, tourism and travel
course at the Hamilton Sir George Seymour National College campus in January.
She plans to continue living on her parents’ farm, and in their almost com-pleted new home, during her studies.
Danielle enjoys the outdoor lifestyle the farm offers, and has even given hunting a go lately with her boyfriend.
She has also been playing premier netball for Te Awamutu Sports for the past two years and is keen on painting and photography, taking both subjects at school.

Stepping out in style...By Cathy Asplin
From the fashion-able to the frightening, Te Awamutu College stu-dents strutted their stuff on the catwalk in front of a large, supportive audi-ence last week.
The event organised by the Year 12 Fabric Class showcased the design talents of all levels from Year 9 to Year 13 stu-dents.
The body painting sec-tion saw models standing for several hours while their ‘canvas’ was pre-pared with everything from fl owers and forests to suits and ties.
Judges, dressmaker Paula Spiers and teacher Tony Membery, had the diffi cult job of selecting winners in each of the competition sections.
Mrs Spiers says she
was delighted to see so many young people tak-ing part in the evening.
“Sewing has become something of a dying art, so its great to see so much interest in fabric crafts.
“The students were also responsible for the organisation of the event, which was impressive. Overall it was a very en-joyable evening.”
RESULTS Body Painting: Wesley Mutu,
Bridget Bisset, Christine Flem-ing.
Year 10 Children’s Clothing: Amber Sanderson.
Year 9 Skirt: Victoria Fraser-Ramsey.
Year 10 Clothing: Ellie Vile (top using recycled materials).
Year 12-13 ‘Items to Slip Into’: Emma Wood (black and red gothic-style underwear set).
Year 11-13 Leisurewear: Char-lotte Lind (black silk pants, fl oral mesh top).
Year 11-13 Dresses: Char-lotte Lind (strapless black silky polkadot dress).

David Graham still top bargain hunter
The hunt for New Zealand’s Bargain Champion is over – and while David Graham of Te Awamutu didn’t walk away with the top prize, he still takes home a tidy $5,000 to spend at The Warehouse.
Mr Graham and his chosen supporter, wife Cathy, battled it out at The Warehouse in Albany, Auckland, competing against four other National Finalists and their partners in a shopping chal-lenge.
In the afternoon they took part in a series of interviews with the Bargain Champion judges: Mary Lambie - former host of TV show Money Doctor; Sophie Gray - the Destitute Gourmet; Stephen Tindall - founder of The Warehouse; and Raewyn Fox from the NZ Federation of Family Budgeting Services Inc.
There were emotional scenes as Hamilton veterinarian and mother of three Kara Dawson was eventually declared New Zealand’s Bargain Champion, winning top prize of a $50,000 year-long spending spree at The Warehouse.
The three month competition process attracted 15,000 top money and lifestyle tips from 5,000 entrants nationwide.
The other three Bargain Champion runners-up were Dianne Davidson from Auckland, Moana Kerr from Hokitika and Leanne Brooks from Christchurch.

Kiwi kids too serious says visiting clownBy Grant Johnston
Kiwi kids don’t laugh often or loud enough! That’s the view of 20-year-old professional clown
Mahsa Matin.Mahsa was born in Iran but lives in California, where
she specialises in stilt walking - which took her to China to perform in the Beijing Parade.
She requested an internship with New Zealand Chil-dren’s Art House Foundation and has spent 10 days in Kihikihi with Waipa Children’s Art House.
Mahsa worked with the Art House classes and says in her observation, Kiwi children take life too seriously.
Although the Art House classes contain some well adjusted students, Mahsa says they need to be able to laugh, giggle and relax more.
She found that New Zealand humour often centres around teasing and put-downs.
“Children need to lighten up and to not lose sight of the fun, wonder and surprise that life can offer,” she says.
NZ Children’s Art House Foundation director, Shona Hammond Boys says they have taken the message on board.
“Mahsa has come in from outside and offered a fresh perspective on something that we, as New Zealanders, were perhaps not aware of,” she says.
“Children need to enjoy some good, wholesome belly laughs, and not at each other’s expense. They need the chance to make things out of cardboard boxes and to have fun with things like balloons and instruments.”
Also staying at Kihikihi on an internship has been German artist Cornelia Schmidt (32). She has worked with the Art House children felting.
She too has taken on board Mahsa’s message and the Art House philosophy of trying to ensure children have fun while they learn.
Rowing NZ launched its bid for the 2010 World Rowing Champi-onship hosting rights at the FISA World Rowing Forum in Istanbul, Turkey on Friday.
And the stars of Rowing New Zealand’s presence in Istanbul have been the bid ‘Athlete Ambassadors’, Caroline and Georgina Ever-Swindell, who have proved as skillful in promoting the New Zealand bid to delegates from the International Rowing Federations as they are over the 2000m rowing course.
“The twins are incredibly popular
personalities and have really added value to our 2010 bid promotion,” said Rowing NZ CEO Craig Ross.
“Our bid invites FISA and the International Rowing Federations to experience Karapiro, world class competition, Kiwi hospitality and New Zealand,” said Rowing NZ CEO Craig Ross.
CorrectionRowing’s golden girls are 27 years
‘young’, not 31 as stated in an article in last week’s Courier.

Council’s chambers were fi lled Thurs-day night for the launching of this year’s festival and Phil Brown’s ‘Up Close and Personal’ photo-graphic exhibi-tion.
Waipa Networks general manager Ray Milner did the honours on behalf of the major sponsoring partner.
It is the sixth year Waipa Networks has sponsored the festival, which Mr Milner says is going from strength to strength.
Festival organiser and i-Site manager Roz Liddell welcomed guests and thanked all the sponsors and par-ticipants of the festival, especially those new to the annual event.
Waipa mayor Alan Livingston also paid tribute to the organis-
ing committee and said the festival had become an iconic event for Waipa.
Organisers also used the occasion to launch the newly designed West Waipa Art and
Garden Guide, which
is now available and has an updated list of notable artists and public gardens in our region.
The festival contin-ues until Sunday, No-vember 20.
Te Awamutu Operat-
ic Society’s ‘Pic-n-Mix’ opens tomorrow night for a fi ve, performance season and Fieldays National No.8 Wire awards also take place tomorrow night. Works are on display at the Te Awamutu Museum.

By Dean TaylorThe inaugural concert featur-
ing the bands from the district’s three school participating in concert programmes was a huge hit on Friday night.
‘Give it a Whirl’ Cushion Concert, a new Scream Rosetown Festi-val event, featured the established bands from Te Awamutu Intermediate
and Te Awamutu College, plus newcomers Pirongia School.
Audience and players alike enjoyed the experi-ence, and opportunity to enjoy the talent of such a large number of students and a wide
range of bands.Each school presented
items from their Concert and Jazz bands. College had all four
bands playing, Junior Jazz, Sup-port Acts, Jazz Band and Concert Band.
The show also raised between $1500 and $2000 for the Simon Swney Memorial Scholarship which assists Te Awamutu Col-lege students to upgrade their instruments.
Organisers believe the concert would be a great biennial festival event.

Te Wananga o Aotearoa’s team of 13 women powered into their volunteer work to help set a new Habitat for Humanity world record for an all-women blitz build.
The Wananga team, named Apabubbas, took up hammers and power tools last Tuesday - fi rst day of the world record attempt which fi nished at 8pm on Friday.
This was nearly one day ahead of the estimated com-pletion time of Saturday afternoon, and nearly a day and a half faster than the pre-vious world record for such an event, which stood at fi ve days
(held by several teams in the USA).
Spokesperson for the Wa-nanga crew Missy Tupaea says the team worked hard but had plenty of fun too.
Funniest moment was when they met the Huntly fam-ily who the house is for and Margy Aull accidentally put a hole in the fl oor (which was soon repaired).
Another priceless moment was seeing Davina Tupaea, half standing on the scaffolding and half clinging to the house, hammering her fi rst nail in and watching its head fall of.

New security service started in town IN BUSINESS CIRCLES
When Vance Smith visited Te Awamutu 20 years ago on an-nual leave from his job in Whangarei he thought Te Awamutu was a beautiful town, with sporting, friendly people.
He was so taken with the Rosetown that he never went back - making Te Awamutu his permanent home.
He’s still convinced its a great place to live and work, so it’s little wonder that he’s happy to do his part in safeguarding the town.
Mr Smith recently started his own secu-rity business ‘Retinga Whaka Maru’ (Secu-rity Service Provider) after many years as a local security guard.
He has been a fa-miliar sight at sports events, parties and public events.
He says it’s even more important today to have reliable secu-rity - whether at home, work or play.
“The public are cer-tainly becoming more security conscious and recognise the need to secure their home, es-pecially, over the com-
ing holidays.“I can help minimise
risk and reduce the chance of property loss with patrols and advice for home owners.”
He is also aware of the need for security at social events, weddings and parties.
“Often parties today can get out of hand quite quickly, which is upsetting for people.
“Having quality se-curity is the key. Any-one can get into the security industry to-
day, but its important security offi cers have Police clearance and a good understanding of the current laws relat-ing to security.”
Mr Smith is happy to discuss security ar-rangements for any event large or small and security patrols for home or business. He offers competitive rates.
He may be contacted by phone (870 4005 or 021 130 6031) for fur-ther details.
RETINGA Whaka Maru director Vance Smith.

Most virus infections come from computer users opening attachments on emails from unknown senders.
Things to help stop infections:
● Don’t open emails from people you don’t know - delete them.
● Manage your child’s internet use, kids will often click ‘yes‘ to sites and offers that they shouldn’t.
● Nothing comes for free, certain sites have free offers if you download and install their application, free music downloads sites are a good example of this .These applications often have spyware or even viruses embedded and will only cause you problems
● Your bank will never send you an unsolicited E-mail, if you receive an email from any bank asking you to login and update your account or credit card details DELETE IT STRAIGHT AWAY. This scam is call Phishing (pronounced fi shing), if you follow the link provided and try to log in the thieves will get your user name, password and account details and precede to empty your bank account.
● The rule of thumb is if you are not sure about the safety of an email or internet link, don’t click on it.

People walking late at night or getting into vehicles driven by someone they don’t know can now register their movements on a central database via text message on the Telecom mobile network.
The SAFE service is free and enables Telecom mobile phone users to send a text message to 7233 (SAFE on the handset) in instances where they wish their whereabouts to be recorded.
This may include an individual walking home alone at night or someone getting into a vehicle with a driver they do not know.
In the event of someone going missing, the po-lice can request information from the database to help track the movements of the missing person.
For each text sent to SAFE, Telecom will record the date and time the message was sent as well as the mobile phone number and message content.
The service has been set up for use with Tel-ecom mobile phones (027 and 025), after sugges-
tions from the public in the wake of recent incidents.
The SAFE service is free. Each message will receive an automated response that states: “Telecom has received your mes-sage and will archive your information. If you feel under threat or are in danger please call 111 and request Police as-sistance.”
Customers are encouraged to record their movements and details precisely. For example, New Zealand has many High Streets so be sure to say which town or suburb e.g. High Street, Blen-heim.
The following are examples of how the service could be used: “Catching lift from Gore at 9.30am to Inver-cargill car reg AB1234.”
“Leaving Courtenay Place, Wgtn at 10pm to walk home to Brooklyn.”

Easy ways to deter unwanted ‘visitors’Staying ‘on guard’ while online...
Identity theft has become common overseas and is on the rise in New Zealand.
Identity theft occurs when a criminal uses another per-son’s information to take on that person’s identity. This mainly involves stealing personal details to commit theft or fraud.
Once the thief has as-sumed your identity they can do everything from buy-ing a mobile phone to writ-ing cheques and opening a credit card account.
Identity theft can ruin your name and credit rating.
Ways to reduce the op-portunity of identity theft:
● Keep you personal information secure
● Order a copy of your credit report at least once a year
● Restrict the number of people you share per-sonal information with
● Shred or burn bank statements etc before putting in the rubbish
● Put a lock on your letterbox
● Check you are re-ceiving credit card state-ments regularly
● If providing personal information, ask why it’s needed, how it will be used and how it will be
kept safe ● Only make telephone
transactions when you have instigated the call and are familiar with the company
● Know who you’re dealing with online. Make a note of all details.
● Delete personal in-formation if you dispose of your computer
● Never create access codes with numbers that may be easily discov-ered
● To minimise the risk of identity theft, remember to manage your personal infor-mation wisely.
Steps to avoid identity theft
Knowing how a burglar thinks and operates is good background information to help put things in place to prevent you or someone you know becoming a burglary victim.
Police have provided the following tips - some practical and sim-ple steps to reduce the risk of being burgled:
● Set up or join a Neighbourhood Support Group in your area and ad-vertise the fact by displaying Neigh-bourhood Support signs and stickers.
● Make sure doors, windows and other entry and exit points from your house have good quality, effective catches and locks - deadlocks if pos-sible. Get into the habit of always us-ing these locks
● Always lock doors and windows at night, if you’re out in the garden or going out or away. Don’t leave a door key hidden outside - burglars know all the places to look
● Keep garden sheds and garages secure and lock away tools and lad-ders
● Have an alarm system profes-sionally installed and consider having it monitored by a reputable security company
● Install sensor lights on access paths or around main external doors
● Install a ‘peep-hole’ in a front door so you know who’s visiting you
● Ask unannounced visitors who
they are and what they want. If you’re not satisfi ed with their an-swer, don’t open the door to them
● Trim trees or remove shrubbery which might ‘hide’ a burglar’s activity
● Get to know your neighbours and develop plans to deal with problems or suspicious activity. Exchanging phone numbers or emergency contact details is a good start.
● If you’re going away, neighbours can collect your mail or newspaper and make your place look occupied, for example by turning on lights, parking a vehicle in your driveway, hanging wash-ing on your line or mowing lawns
● Mark valuable property with serial numbers and keep a record of these numbers
● Consider placing “Beware of Dog” signs on gates or fences
● If you have an answer phone, don’t record a message that suggests you’re out or alone.
● Police are always interested in suspicious activity. Don’t hesitate to call Police to report something out of the ordinary and, if you see a crime being committed, call 111.
Above all, remember burglars like easy, tempting opportunities.
DON’T overlook the obvious and DO all you can to reduce the risk of being burgled.

Hawthorn rises to eventing occasion
Chelsey Hawthorn and Look at That lived up to their pre-event favouritism winning the Mitavite Horse Trials at Kihikihi.
The pair showed that their second placing at the New Zealand Qualifi er for the FEI Eventing World Cup, at Kihikihi in April this year, was no fl uke.
Hawthorn (20) showed great character and determination to put the disappointment of not making the New Zealand Trans Tasman team to Adelaide this week behind her.
“I’m rapt with the win, par-ticularly the way we went in the dressage,” she said.
“It was our best ever test, de-spite a course error costing us four penalties.”
Hawthorn and Look At That produced solid performances in all three phases over the weekend.
They followed up an improved dressage performance with a faultless show jumping round to be second after day one on Saturday.
As expected, they blazed around the cross country track in the fastest time, recording no jump faults and only 4.8 time faults.
Horse Trials spokesperson Cathy Houlbrooke says Haw-thorn’s turn to represent New Zealand in the Trans Tasman team will come.
“It’s not a matter of if, it’s just a matter of when.”
Another young rider, Clarke Johnstone on Oakley Vision, was second in the advanced class.
Johnstone put disappointing performances earlier this sea-son to rest with much improved dressage and jumping efforts.
The combination was second after dressage but a rail and fi ve time faults in the show jumping left them in fi fth place after day one.
They added only 9.6 time faults on the cross country phase to improve three plac-ings.
Dressage leaders Karin Nei-derer and Roany had to settle for third overall after a rail and two time faults in show-jump-ing, and 17.2 time faults on the cross country.
Intermediate, division 1 win-ners Janine Hyde and Aspira-tion improved from fi fth after day one by jumping clear cross country and adding only 1.2 time faults.
Rachel Lines, on Aberson, similarly improved from sixth to second, with Debbie Mitchell and Waimak taking third place.
Janelle Smallwood and
Xavier led the second division of intermediate from start to fi n-ish, providing valuable grading points for her team in the Mi-tavite regional teams event.
Amanda Redditt and Excuse Me were second, with Kirsten Kelly and Sooty the Sweep third.
Novice Classes were won by Sarah Parton (Edison) Alana Tasker (Opera Groove) Jo Shep-herd (Dunstan Ditto) and Mari-lyn Youngs (Saltash)
The Mitavite regional teams event was won by four riders not required in the selected Waikato regional team.
Advance class winner Chelsey Hawthorn anchored the victo-rious Rock Hill Rovers team, captained by Sarah Broughton of Huntly on promising young novice horse Hayden.
The other two team members were former Australian rider John Twomey, now living in Cambridge, on another talented novice Waitangi Jet Street, and Morrinsville’s Janelle Small-wood and Xavier in Intermedi-ate.
Rock Hill Rovers threw down an early challenge on day one with a winning dressage
performance from Smallwood, backed up by solid perform-ances from Broughton, Twomey and Hawthorn.
Twomey, Hawthorn and Smallwood had fault free show jumping rounds, while Broughton knocked just one rail.
Rockhill Rovers held a seven point advantage going into day two on Sunday.
As members of the leading team, they were easily identi-fi ed during the cross country phase by the bright yellow Tour Leaders caps.
Twomey jumped clear for an individual third place, as did Broughton but with time faults.
Smallwood and Hawthorn both had great cross country rounds to win their respective classes and seal victory for the Rock Hill Rovers.
The runners-up ribbons went to the regionally selected team from Auckland - Anne-Marie Johns on South Carolina, Kirst-en Kelly on Sootie the Sweep, Janine Hayde on Aspiration and Amanda Reddit on Excuse Me.
Horse Trials win adds food for thought for national selectors

Find out what Futsal’s about
Some of the best young Futsal players in New Zealand can be seen in action at ASB Bank Sta-dium, Te Awamutu Events Cen-tre on Saturday.
Teams from Cambridge, Hamilton, Matamata and Te Awamutu have entered the an-nual tournament to be contested in two grades - intermediate for 6-9 year-olds and senior for 10-13 year-olds.
National coach, Carlos Farias of Cambridge, says Futsal is ‘a kind of indoor soccer’ endorsed by FIFA.
“It is a fast and very exciting game to both play and watch.
“It teaches children body bal-ance and ball skills, which can be transferred to the outdoor soccer fi eld.”
Teams can have a maximum of eight players, with only fi ve tak-ing the court at any given time.
It will be the fi nal workout
for the 28 players selected to represent Waikato at the an-nual Canterbury Futsal Inter-national Challenge tournament in Christchurch on November 26-27.
The Te Awamutu dominated Waikato No 1 team caused a boilover beating the top Austral-ian Green team 5-4 in the fi nal last year.
The victorious line-up included locals Jordan Ball, Carl Taylor, Aaron Kelly (Paterangi School) and Joshua White (Te Awamutu Intermediate).
Te Awamutu supply four of this year’s Waikato team, Cambridge have 13 and Matamata one.
They will be up against Aus-tralian state teams and teams from Canterbury, Otago and Taranaki.
For further information about the Futsal tournament contact Carlos Farias on 021 189 4915.

TeA Cycles sponsored summer series has become one of the most popular twilight events in the Waikato.
After only four nights racing, 254 riders have competed in at least one of the races held weekly on Tuesday night.
Richard Mellsop reports that riders are entering from as far a fi eld as Auckland and National Park.
Not even a strong wind could prevent the at-tendance record being broken for the second night on the trot last week when 192 riders faced the starter.
“When the idea of running a summer series was mooted in 1986 by the cycling club, never in their wildest dreams did the committee envisage up to 200 riders racing,” says Mellsop.
“In 1986 the race was a handicap event, with 12 riders regually racing.
“Fun rides started to become fashionable in the 1990s and the numbers climbed accordingly. By the late 90’s, the fi elds were getting too big. It was then decided to introduce graded racing.”
Mellsop says some of Te Awamutu’s top cyclists started their careers via this type of series, in-cluding internationals Rushlee Buchanan, Peter Latham and Tim Gudsell.
“A few more careers are just starting judging by the talent on show in this year’s series.”
Due to the high numbers, it has been decided to alter the start times for the U15s to 6.15pm and increase the number of grades to make smaller bunches.
Last week’s A grade was won by Eric Drower. He decided he was not waiting for the bunch
sprint, jumping clear coming into town to win by three seconds from Mathew Gorter and Scott Ardern.
Ardern retains the Century 21 series leader’s jersey, seven points clear of Drower.
B grade was won by Steve Burron, from Sheldon Gorter and Matt Douglas. Chris Scott retains the leaders jersey despite punching.
C grade visitors took the major placings, with Paul Gerritsen winning from Nathan Toya and An-drew Baker. Justin Ellis retains the leaders jersey by fi ve points from John Williamson.
In D grade, fi rst year U17 rider Robert Hall out sprinted Chris Leaper and Graham Scott. The leaders jersey goes to Leaper, with fi ve riders all within fi ve points of him.
E grade riders split up coming into town, with Chris Read winning from Rex Cresswell, with Ed-die Brightwell third, a further fi ve seconds back. Sean McBeth retains the leader’s jersey.
Alan Messenger went one better this week win-ning the F grade from Sonny Anderson, with Ross Milne third. Messenger is fi ve points clear of An-derson for the leader’s jersey.
Four newcomers to the sport entered the U15 race after having a session with the Waikato Cy-cling Academy the previous week.
Kate McLauglan won her fi rst race, with Nicola McCormick second and Samual Clements-Stewart third. The U15 leader’s jersey has been regained by McCormick from Josh Gibson, who took it off her last week.
WILLS REWARDEDTe Awamutu Sports Cycling Club have fi ve
members named to represent New Zealand at next month’s Oceania road championships in Wan-ganui. They are Sarah Ulmer, Melissa Holt, Rush-lee Buchanan, Ryan Wills and Shem Rodger. Wills makes the team for the fi rst time after impressive form at the road nationals.

Langman wants to extend record
Laura Langman was keen to extend her impeccable in-ternational record when she fl ew out with the Silver Ferns for their tour of Jamaica yes-terday.
After fi ve tests for the New Zealand netball team, includ-ing two against arch-rivals Australia, the Te Pahu wing-defence has yet to record her fi rst loss in the national colours.
But with three tests on the short tour, one apiece against Jamaica and Barbados and then a fi nal, Langman knows the unpredictability of the Caribbean teams cannot be underestimated.
While she has yet to play the senior team, she found out about the Jamaican’s ability fi rst-hand with New Zealand under-21, who won a close series 2-1 in February against their counterparts.
“They (the Jamaicans) are very fi t,” she said.
“They have got amazing skills and I’m sure the Ja-maican top side will be even better.”
After the record win against Australia, the Silver ferns will face two teams with a different style of play and, if anything, even more physical than their transtasman rivals.
“They’re very aerial and like to get the ball in the air.
They’re nuggety and don’t let you get away with any-thing - very physical.”
Langman is the sole special-ist wing defence in the squad, with Anna Scarlett the cover.
Silver Ferns coach Ruth Aitken said Langman had the potential to also play centre - her position with the suc-cessful Magic side this year, at international level.
“I think she has the ability to play there,” said Aitken.
“But at the moment I see her as a specialist wing-defence. That fi nal fi nesse in her feed-ing, she’s got to work on that.
She’s coming along in leaps and bounds and, at some point in the future, we’ll be looking at a move there for her.”
The Silver Ferns play Jamaica on November 14 (10.15am NZ time) and Barba-dos on November 15 (11.15am NZ time).
The fi nal between the top two teams will be played on November 16 at 11.30am, NZ time.

Te Awamutu Courier and Tracs give readers the chance to celebrate The Big Day Out ‘06 by winning the CD ‘Bad Blood’ from Aussie trio Gerling.
Big Day Out takes place at Auckland’s Ericsson Stadium on Friday, January 20. Tickets are avail-able from Ticketek and Tracs.
Tracs are also run-ning their BDO bus, the hassle free way to get to and from the venue.
All entries to the BDO CD competitions also automatically go in the draw to win a dou-ble pass to the event. Any ticket holder under the age of 15 years must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to Big Day Out.
Sydney trio Ger-ling made a name for themselves remapping the geography of Aus-tralian music by going wherever the hell they wanted.
Established as mav-ericks who were will-ing to take risks in the recording studio, their live show translated perfectly and has al-ways been lauded as an unpredictable must see.
Don’t miss Burke, Press-er and Darren, three scruffy punks daring to push the envelope of joyous and chaotic noise nationally in 2006.
Gerling share the bill with the nest of overseas and local acts, including The White Stripes, Iggy and the Stooges, Franz Ferdi-nand, Kings of Leon, The Mars Volta, A Fire Inside, Sleater-Kinney, The magic Numbers, Soulwax, The Living End, Dei Hamo, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Elemeno P and Pluto.
BDO is more than a little chuffed to an-nounce the return of The White Stripes.
Since their last BDO visit in 2002, our old
f r i e n d s Jack and
Meg have dropped two universally
acclaimed albums, ‘El-ephant’ and this year’s ‘Get Behind Me Satan’, not to mention an era-defi ning single in the shape of ‘Seven Nation Army’.
They are the rock icons of our time, top-ping charts worldwide and selling a quarter of a million albums in Australia alone. Their simple, two-person, guitar and drums line-up belies a huge blues/garage/country/folk/rock’n’roll cacophony.
BDO is rolling out the red carpet to herald the arrival of rock royalty - Iggy and the Stooges.
Their dangerous and grimy ‘60’s to ‘70’s cata-logue was the blueprint for every punk rock, garage rock and metal band to come.
After 30 years apart, The Stooges reformed in 2003 to contribute to Iggy’s album ‘Skull Ring’ and to play a string of rapturously received shows. Now it’s our turn.
BDO is thrilled to have Franz Ferdinand along for the ride. Universally acclaimed
as the album of 2004, their self-titled debut has now been topped by the brand new ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’.
It’s more dramatic, more emotional, more three dimensional. Not just new wave, Franz Ferdinand offer a new world: rock music with style, sexual intrigue, smarts, and more plen-ty of room for dancing.
To be in to win simply put your name, address and daytime contact number on the back of a standard sized enve-
lope, address it to the ‘Gerling Big Day Out Competition’ and make sure it reaches our offi ce by 5pm next Tuesday.
