Course Description: Business Law I is an introduction to the legal setting in which businesses operate. Coverage includes introduction to law, constitutional law, administrative law, torts, crimes, contracts, ethics and the effect of government regulation on businesses. (This course will help satisfy the graduation requirements of the Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree.) Student Learning Outcomes (SLO): At the completion of this course, the successful student should be able to do the following:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the elements of a contract and contract terminology. (Quizzes 11 – 14, 17 & 18, and Exams 5 & 6)

2. Construct an enforceable contract. (Contract Project)

3. Demonstrate knowledge of classifications of contracts, performance and discharge of contracts, and

remedies for breach of contract. (Quizzes 11, 19, and Discussion 2, Exam 4)

4. Demonstrate knowledge of the statute of frauds, parol evidence rule, and third party beneficiaries. (Statute of Frauds Assignment, Quiz 15, 16 and Exam 5)

5. Demonstrate knowledge of ethical issues in corporate decision making. (Ethics Assignment, Discussion 1,

Quiz 2 and Exam 1) Minimum Technical Requirements: You will also need Internet access at least three days a week. If you don’t have high speed Internet access, the College has computers with this capability. Students enrolled in this course must be able to:

• Use all required features of Falcon Online such as discussion boards and the ‘Assignments’ • Send and receive attachments by e-mail • Create and submit files using Microsoft Word processing programs

Computer skills required are a general knowledge of word processing and ability to attach and upload documents. Daytona State College provides distance education technology that allows students to participate in educational programs that would traditionally be unavailable to non-traditional students. However, due to the nature of distance education, each student must accept a higher level of responsibility for his/her participation and behavior in order for the program to be successful. Class Format: This class will be completely online. Please approach this course with an open mind. I hope you enjoy taking a class online. The class is not any easier than taking Business Law I in a traditional classroom, but in addition to saving gas, you can do this class at any time you want, even at 3:00 AM when you cannot sleep. Log in to this course. The first page you land on will be the ‘Course Homepage.’ Read the ‘Announcements’ on the ‘Course Homepage.’ Follow the directions there. These directions include READING this SYLLABUS, and watching the ‘Welcome Video.’ Print and Read this Syllabus and put it in a three ring binder (portfolio) right by your computer. This syllabus has ALL of the important deadlines for exams and assignments. 2. Click on the ‘Content’ tab, and after reading the ‘Course Overview,’ click on “Start Here Introductory Materials.” . Proceed through the online portion of this class chapter-by-chapter. There are PowerPoint slides for each chapter and they are a very good summary of the important points of the chapter. You may also want to print off the PowerPoint slides and insert them in your portfolio. If you get an ERROR message when trying to open the PowerPoint slides, remember to SAVE them first, and then after you save them you will able to OPEN them. (Netiquette) Be courteous and considerate. Being honest and expressing your position thoroughly is very important, but being considerate of others online is just as important as in the classroom. Make every effort to be clear. Online communication lacks the nonverbal cues that fill in much of the meaning in face-to-face communication. Do not use ALL CAPS. This is considered “shouting” and the message is very hard to read. Check spelling, grammar, and punctuation (you may want to compose in word processing software then cut and paste the message into the discussion or e-mail). Use language that is correct and appropriate in anything you write. You are always expected to check spelling, use correct punctuation, and properly cite your sources. Please leave the text message abbreviations on your phone. Break up large blocks of text into paragraphs and use a blank line between paragraphs. once you start the graded exam you must take it then and you will have 120 minutes to complete the exam. You will not be able to save it and return at another time. Your exams will be open from the day the class begins until 11:59 PM on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. NOTE: Full instructions on the Contract Project and the Ethics, Torts and Statute of Frauds Assignments, including the grading criteria, are in the “Content” section of course in the corresponding chapters and under the ‘Assignment’ tab in the Table of Contents for the course. Contract Project: You will need to pair up with classmate as a partner to draft a contract. You only need one (1) contract between you, BUT EACH OF YOU NEEDS TO UPLOAD IT TO YOUR ‘ASSIGNMENT’ DROP BOX. The grading criterion for this contract is in the ‘Content’ section of the course. The contract is worth 50 points. You and a partner will have to draft a contract and both of you will upload the same contract to the ‘Assignments’. There is a ‘Forum’ in the ‘Discussions’ to find a partner for this project. Statute of Frauds Assignment: When the ‘Statute of Frauds’ Assignment is completed you will have to upload it to the “‘Assignments’”. (This assignment is found under the content of Chapter 16.) Discussions: There will be two Graded Class Discussions worth a total of 50 points each. Once a discussion closes, it cannot be reopened for any reason. It is as if you missed that class. Your graded class discussions will consist of two parts: Part 1 and Part 2:

PART 1 of the discussion, you will present your research on the topic. Each student will submit ONE ORIGINAL POST presenting his research and conclusion on the topic. This post will include citations for all research. Citations should include live links to information gathered from online sources. This part of your discussion can earn up to 25 points. PART 2 of your graded group discussion will involve replying to TWO (2) other students’ posts. You will “reply” during PART 2 of the discussion. Your replies should show reflection on the original post AND provide further research on the topic. Your replies should include live links to information gathered from online sources. This part of your discussion can earn up to 10 points for each reply (20 total possible points). Grading Criteria for Group Discussions: Part 1 - Your posts will be graded for accuracy, professionalism, and timeliness. Proper grammar, punctuation and spelling must also be used in order to receive full credit. Five (5) points are allocated for grammar, punctuation and spelling. The discussions boards are locked so you will only be able to post during the time period allotted. Your original post can earn up to 50 points:

• Posts earning 20 – 25 points: will include research from TWO OR MORE SOURCES. Each source must have a citation or live link.

• Posts earning 15 - 19 points: posts with only one source. • Posts earning between 0 – 14 points: unprofessional, inaccurate or incorrectly cited posts.

Part 2 – Replies to TWO (2) other posts will be graded for staying on topic, adding new information, professionalism, and timeliness. Your two (2) replies can earn up to 20 points (10 points each).

• Posts earning 5- 10 points: will include research from ONE OR MORE SOURCES. • Posts earning between 0 – 4 points: unprofessional, inaccurate or incorrectly cited posts.

You must be online often during the graded group discussion. Please do not wait until the last few days to read



posts. The purpose of a group discussion is to build upon posts with more information and learn from other students. Please Only Post Three Times for Each Graded Discussion. Your posts should be well- researched and add value to the discussions. They should draw information from multiple sources and these sources must be cited.

An online discussion should mirror a face-to-face discussion in that the participants are constantly enriching the topic, giving it a life of its own. This enriched content imbues all discussion participants with an enhanced perspective, enabling and encouraging them to re-deposit even more insightful postings. For this cycle to take place, I ask that everyone's postings are comprised of more than just one or two lines, and be on topic. Please check your postings to ensure that they meet the criteria specified above. Remember, the initial spark of your thoughts can be the catalyst to ignite another's.

Grading Policy: Grades will only be given to students enrolled for college credit. You may, at any time during the semester, obtain your grade average by making an appointment or simply keeping track of your points. Incomplete (I) Grades: An incomplete grade will NOT be given UNLESS the following criteria are met: A request in writing is submitted to the instructor prior to last three weeks of class, All assignments (quizzes and exams) were completed at that point in time, The student has a grade of C or higher at that point in time. The incomplete work must be made up before the middle of the next major semester. “I” grades automatically convert to “F” grades if the make-up requirements are not met and the appropriate grade change is not submitted by the deadline as published in the College Catalog.



Class Withdrawal Process: Although it is not necessary to have approval from the instructor to withdraw from the course, you should discuss the situation with the instructor. Many times the issue can be resolved with communication.
