staff on location near a busy intersection for an American flag giveaway on the Friday before a patriotic holiday weekend. We simply spent the morning giving away American flags for free to all listeners with the message, “We love our country.” It was really special because it was truly on a scale “from sea to shining sea.” Many AMS stations did the same. We checked in on the air with Blair from Charleston along with New York, San Francisco and many others. Simple. Powerful. It was inspiring because there was a wide range of people who showed up to grab a flag –from moms to military. They called in to the station, too. It wasn’t so much that they needed another flag, but a lot of them expressed they appreciated the sentiment. iHeartMedia WBWL/Boston PD Lance Houston: I was in the audience at the CMA Awards in November 2001. It was my first time flying after 9/11 and I vividly remember seeing troops with the big machine guns at the airport – a truly scary sight in our country at the time. Shortly after I got to Nashville, rumors started circulating about the new song Alan Jackson was going to sing on the CMAs. I’ll never forget where I was sitting in the Grand Ole Opry House or that roaring, standing ovation after he sang “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)” for the first time. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. A truly incredible, memorable moment for me. CBS Radio KFRG/Riverside middayer Heather Froglear: This past Memorial Day we executed and co-sponsored the annual West Coast Thunder Memorial Bike Run and concert. We had more than 7,500 on their Harleys riding from Riverside Harley Davidson, past the beautiful Riverside National Cemetery and on to Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, where the morning ride ends with a concert. This year Big & Rich were our headliners. The event benefits the Riverside National Cemetery and it is always an honor and privilege to be a part of it, both personally

and as a radio station. There’s not a man in my family that did not wear a military uniform; my Dad is a retired Colonel, having spent 28 years in the United States Air Force. It was my honor to emcee the event this year as well. We have such an amazing and supportive community of military in Southern California. It was truly a sight to see; kids, families, veterans and grandparents lining the streets to watch the parade of bikes to honor the fallen. Gives me chills thinking about it. Mid-West Family WWQM/Madison PD Fletcher Keyes: I live near a large cemetery which has a section of military

Monarch Publicity Owner Cindy Hunt discusses her most influential music:1. Simon & Garfunkel, Bridge Over Troubled Water: I loved listening to my dad’s vinyl as a kid and learned how to harmonize from Paul and Art.2. Amy Grant, Lead Me On: My first concert and a record that shaped my youth.3. Sara Evans, Born To Fly: While at RCA I got to work with Sara on her first few records. She’s a great talent and

this album always puts me in a bouncy, happy mood.4. Reba McEntire at Wolf Trap, VA, 1993: The moment I realized I was a country music fan.5. Georges Bizet’s Carmen: Confession ... I actually like opera.•Highly regarded music you’ve actually never heard: Anything by Phish.•An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: I like Bob Dylan’s songs but prefer to hear someone else sing them.•An album you listened to incessantly: k.d. lang’s Hymns of the 49th Parallel. •One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Nathan Chapman’s Revival, an amazing record start to finish.•Music you’d rather not admit to enjoying: New Kids On The Block. It’s an obsession I proudly share with Thirty Tigers’ Stephanie O’Donnell and WUSN/Chicago’s Marci Braun and Liz Geerling.

gravesites. Every Memorial Day there is a ceremony that always includes a 21-gun salute – seven rifles shot simultaneously, three times. It always catches me off guard. For a second I hear shots and think, “Oh no,” as if something bad is happening. Then I remember it’s Memorial Day and feel good about what’s happening. Freedom rings out loud when I

hear gunshots in my neighborhood. But it’s not what you might think.

Alpha WUBB/Savannah APD/MD/midday personality Jess Jennings: At a July 4 parade we invited

about half a dozen National Guard soldiers to ride our radio station’s float. The response from the community was incredible. Walking beside them you’d see veterans, moms, dads, brothers and sisters stop and look at these soldiers. You know they were seeing themselves in a past life, or their son or daughter in the faces of the heroes riding on that float. The response varied, but it was powerful. Applause, tears and shouts of “Thank you!” I remember an older gentleman toward the end of the parade – a WWII veteran in a wheelchair. He couldn’t stand, but had he had the strength you know he would have gotten to his feet. He removed his hat and put his hand on his heart. That is the good stuff – why we do what we do. It is such a blessing to be able to work in a format that understands the importance of supporting the troops and their families. Cherry Creek KBLL/Helena, MT OM/OD/morning host Dale Desmond: We had a float in a parade – hay bales, banners and everything ... and our air staff. We knew a couple of National Guard soldiers so at the last minute we were like, “Hey, why don’t you guys jump up and ride with us?” The outpouring of appreciation to those soldiers was really inspiring. My dad was a Vietnam vet and my grandpa was on the USS Kobe – a submarine – as a diesel engine mechanic, and my great-great grandpa fought in WWII. Coming from that kind of legacy and having these guys on our float was just really cool. –Jess Wright, Russ Penuell

Curb’s Mo Pitney puts an industry spin on the artist interview: I grew up listening to WXXQ/Rockford, IL. They were one of the first stations to play my music – like every hour, right when I started my radio tour. I first heard myself on the radio in east Tennessee. I had just left the third station I’d visited and they said, “We’re going to play your song at five o’clock.” We drove to the hotel, pulled into the parking lot and waited. That was cool

but I knew it was coming. Then when I was heading home for Christmas I was on Highway 39 and randomly heard it. But another station playing Christmas music kept bleeding into the one playing mine. It’s funny that “Silent Night” and my record were fighting each other. I was with one of my regionals, Sam DePrez, in Buffalo and realized we had three hours before we had to be at the station. Joking, she said, “Maybe we could go to Niagara Falls.” We not only looked at the waterfall, it was the first day the Maid of the Mist was out. We got soaking wet, ran back to our cars and went to straight to the station to do an interview and performance. We got there just in time. When I’ve had a big long day and I’m headed to the hotel, my thing is to stop and get milk and a bag of Teddy Grahams. It’s my favorite thing in the world. I’m not ashamed of it either. I may have Facebooked or Tweeted my love for Teddy Grahams. I wish I could have dinner with one of my favorite pastors of all time, Charles H. Spurgeon. He lived in the 1800s. I’d pick his brain about the Bible. I’d probably order tacos because I’m sure he didn’t know much about that. And I can eat tacos for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I can’t leave home without my Bible or guitar. I wish I had written Trisha Yearwood’s “The Song Remembers When,” written by Hugh Prestwood. It’s very deep and emotional, but very simple and sobering. I wish I could write a song that causes people to feel the way I felt when I first heard it. My least favorite interview question is about my underwear. Every time I’m talking with someone about my music, I thank them for not asking me if I wear boxers or briefs.

member, none of us may be around to enjoy giving it.” A humble Walker followed, thanking each board President he’s served under as well as his family and colleagues. “I’m still here and still loving it,” he promised. Yoakam was next and his appreciation for Country radio was evident. “I listen to non-terrestrial radio a lot, but I turn on local radio usually every hour when I’m on the road,” he said. “It’s important that we stay connected to the sense of community that terrestrial radio has always been about. Radio was and is to me magic to my ears ... but man I miss the back-announcing and front-announcing; I miss the personalities.” Yoakam ended with another industry nod. “Without Country radio, I would not have sold those 25 million albums,” he said. WYCD/Detroit PD Tim Roberts appeared next to induct friend and mentor Joel Raab. “Someone recently used an analogy about Country music being a salad,” Roberts noted with a smile. “I don’t really understand any of that, but if our industry really is a salad, then Joel Raab is the dressing.” Raab shared anecdotes on everything from family to the power of a positive attitude. “Our business is changing and we need to embrace what’s new and what’s better,” he asserted. “Think about what can be.” Dalessandro was installed by Specs Howard School of Media Arts’ Dick Kernen, who reminded the audience of her days as “a 19-year-old rock and roll chick.” Upon graduation, Kernen explained he’d found a job for her at a Country station. “She nearly spit-up on my shoe!” Dalessandro’s feelings about the format eventually changed, of course. “Country fans are more passionate and engaged than any other radio listener,” she confessed. “I live for that; I love that connection.” Introducing former radio exec Sammy George demanded two people – iHeartMedia’s Clay Hunnicutt and WUSY/Chattanooga, TN’s Bill “Dex” Poindexter. “He gave us a shot when we didn’t deserve it and he saved our bacon when I know

John Berry has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his upcoming two-disc project. we didn’t deserve it,” Hunnicutt recalled. “Like that time we were standing in front of 9,000 people and gave away two brand new trucks, but only had one.” Poindexter recalled being reprimanded for stepping outside during his airshift to smoke a cigar. “I was out there with the afternoon guy from one of the other stations and Sammy came out and said just to me, ‘What do you think you’re doing? Get back in there and get your head in the ballgame!’” Poindexter later demanded an explanation for why he’d been singled out. “Sammy looked at me over the top of his glasses and said, ‘Because he doesn’t have your potential,’” Poindexter said. “Sammy George identified your potential and he got it out of you whether you liked it or not.” George’s acceptance incorporated the importance of hiring the right people, attitude, laughter and community service. “Have fun at all costs; run toward the laughter,” he encouraged. “And spend a lot of time in the break room,” he said before dispensing a career’s worth of thank-yous. The former GM’s dedication was apparent in a story he shared involving his wife and then-newborn son. “Shelia and I

actually stopped and took Lucas on a sales call on the way home from the hospital when he was two days old,” George proudly said. “I found out right away he was not gonna be a salesman – he cried the whole friggin’ time.” Carroll was called up by daughters Kelsey Bailey and Hailey Carroll, who gushed about their dad’s accomplishments. “How do you follow that?” the visibly touched Texan asked as he took the stage. Noting later that his listening audience would be able to watch

his speech online, he spoke directly to them. “Thank you for taking me into your home, your vehicles and your offices for all these years,” he offered. Carroll made a point to thank iHeartMedia, his employer for the last 32 years. “I was Clear Channel when Clear

Channel wasn’t cool,” he affirmed. “And when it was cool; then when it wasn’t cool again.” Carroll became emotional as he thanked his late father. “He taught me to love music, specifically Country music,” Carroll recalled. “He took me to meet Johnny Cash [his] musical hero, so I got my picture with Johnny when I was 15 years old ... if Dad is watching from above, he’s probably sitting with Johnny Cash, grabbing him by the arm and going, ‘That’s my boy!’” Mike Kennedy was introduced by friend John Rich, who recalled a surprise visit to Kennedy’s home one night. A jet had been dispatched to transport Rich and his musical entourage to a corporate show. “You can imagine what mode that puts us in,” Rich mused. They detoured to Kansas City. “We land, we get a ride and I call Mike and say, ‘We’ve got Big Kenny, Cowboy Troy and Two Foot Fred and we’re about two miles from your house.” Rich and Kennedy swapped boots in addition to drinks that night and the rhinestone-encrusted evidence was on Kennedy’s feet as he took the podium. Kennedy began his acceptance with an all-too-familiar tale of radio one-upmanship. The story included a well-known cast of Country broadcasters trying to out-boast one another with the age and circumstances by which they were discovered. The laughs grew louder as Kennedy described his 16-year-old self, 12-year-old mic-cracker Kerry Wolfe, nine-year-old Gregg Swedberg and

five-year-old Jeff Garrison. “But there was one more guest at the table,” Kennedy noted of his imagined brag session. “His mom was giving birth and having a heck of a time getting that big head to come out when he finally popped out with the umbilical cord in his hand. He wasn’t even crying when he said, ‘Hi, I’m Lon Helton and welcome to Country Countdown USA!’” As the night came to an end, Kennedy thanked his friends, family and colleagues, and praised Country radio. “There’s no format like it,” he insisted. “It’s phenomenal. It’s a special treat to

be in such a business.” –Russ Penuell CAC
