Board, serving with great passion and dedication; andWHEREAS Council and the Slovoak Village residents were deeply saddened tolearn of Marian's passing on February 2,2012; andWHEREAS Marian leaves behind his wife Jarmila, children Barbara and Henryand grandchildren Samantha and Jacob; andWHEREAS Marian will be warmly remembered for his sense of humour,kindness and his philanthropic charity work;NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Council of the Corporation ofthe City of Brantford extend its sincerest condolences to the Michalik family ontheir recent loss.

    9.1 Earth Hour 2012WHEREAS climate change is the biggest environmental threat to our planet andthe number one concern for Canadians; andWHEREAS at exactly 8:30 p.m. on March 31,2012, major cities around the worldwill turn off their lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change andto symbolize that, working together, the people of the world can make adifference in the fight against global warming; andWHEREAS the event, called "Earth Hour", a World Wildlife Fund (VWVF) initiativethat was officially announced in December 2007 at the. United NationsConference on Climate Change, has grown from a single event in Sydney,Australia to a global phenomenon where over 4,000 cities and towns and 88countries made "Earth Hour" 2009 the largest climate awareness campaign inhistory; andWHEREAS Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever reaching 1.3billion people. On March 27, 2010, a record 128 countries and territories unitedacross the globe making it the largest voluntary action ever witnessed. Iconicbuildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americasswitched off. Once again, over 10 million Canadians took part in all provincesand territories, turning out the lights in over 300 cities and towns.WHEREAS participating in this historic event sends a powerful message to everycitizen and business around the world that it's possible to take action on climatechange and that switching off our lights is just one simple action we can take tohelp make a difference; andWHEREAS the goal is to educate the community on the threat of climate changeand what each individual and business can do to make a difference every day;and to get as many individuals, households, and businesses as possible to turnoff their lights as a symbolic statement that now is the time to take action onclimate change; andWHEREAS the City of Branlford has participated in the E3Tth Hour initiative forthe past four years as its residents are very energy conscious and would be up tothe challenge of decreasing energy consumption;

    NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the following actions be confirmedfor the City's involvement in the 2012 Earth Hour initiative:A THAT at 8:30 p.m: on March 31, 2012, the City of Brantford, in conjunctionwith Brantford Power, JOIN other cities around the world in literally

    "turning out the lights" by shutting off all non-essential lighting in all of itsfacilities, where feasible, and without jeopardizing safety, for one full hour;and

    B. THAT, to be formally recognized around the world as an Earth Hourparticipant, the appropriate staff REGISTER at www.earthhour,org, theofficial website for this initiative; and

    C. THAT the City of Brantford's participation in Earth Hour BE WIDELYPROMOTED AND PUBLICIZED, including notice in the Civic News, inorder to raise awareness about this important issue and in order toencourage every individual, household and business in Brantford, andbeyond, to join in by turning off their lights, and all other non-essentialpower, for one hour at 8:30 p.m. on March 31, 2012.
