Dance Marathon at Washington University in St. Louis is one of the oldest and most treasured traditions on campus. Each year, more than a thousand students, faculty, and alumni dance for 12 hours in celebration of the funds they raised throughout the year to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Greater St. Louis. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of Greater St. Louis, part of a nationwide network of children’s hospitals, raises funds and awareness for its two partner hospitals: St. Louis Children’s Hospital and SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center. In the past 16 years, Dance Marathon has raised over $1.3 million to benefit these hospitals and the miracles they make possible. The two hospitals can use the funds raised through Dance Marathon however they see fit. In the past, Dance Marathon has helped fund Child Life Services, which focuses on helping kids cope with their experience in the hospital, a tranquil rooftop garden for patients and their families at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and the Bob Costas Cancer Center at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.

What is Dance Marathon?

Miracle Moment Meet Bryson May, one of the two 2014 Children’s Miracle Network of Greater

St. Louis Miracle Ambassadors. Bryson, now age 6, was born prematurely at 26 weeks at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, weighing just

1 pound, 15.7 ounces. Because he was premature, his lungs did not form properly, resulting in a lung condition called broncopulmonary dysplasia. As

treatment, he was placed on a ventilator for 5 months. Bryson was also found to have profound hearing loss, but he ultimately received a cochlear

implant and was able to hear the outside world for the very first time. Bryson was also diagnosed with diplegia spastic cerebral palsy and had to use a

walker until the age of 5. He underwent a groundbreaking surgery called a selective dorsal rhizotomy at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and has been able to walk unassisted ever since! Bryson is now in kindergarten and loves video

games, maps, long rides in the car, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
