Not Peace But a Sword – Part 1

The summer of 1967 was called “The Summer of Love”. The Beatles wrote a song that year called “All You Need Is Love”. One observer noted that the Beatles told us all we need is love – but then they broke up.

Some young people in the 60s generation often spoke as if they expected to bring about real change in the world, a culture based on freedom and love. It doesn’t seem to have happened. It looks as if they came to the conclusion that it was much easier to just party than to really work at loving their neighbor. Years later a more mature and wiser John Lennon admitted that it’s easy to just say it, but much more difficult to live it.

Many people today have their own opinions of Jesus. Some say he was a great moral teacher. Some say he came to liberate people. What these people mean by “liberate” seems to vary. Some mean that Jesus came to bring physical or political freedom to peoples or groups who are oppressed by others – the less-fortunate, the poor, the “have nots” who are put down and kept from enjoying the benefits society has to offer the “haves”. Others seem to mean that Jesus came to liberate us in moral terms – to free our minds from a sense of guilt and sin, so that we can enjoy life in whatever we like. When they think of Jesus as the “Prince of Peace” they seem to think that He came to end all wars and conflicts, both public and private, to spread the word of love and peace – kind of like what the Beatles and the hippies of 60s generation were talking about, as if they regard Jesus as the first Flower Child.

It seems doubtful that those people have read the passage from Matthew’s Gospel where Jesus says do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace A but a sword.

This is a hard passage of Scripture. Jesus sometimes said things that were tough, things that did not go down easy, things that people did not want to hear – at the time He said them any more than now.

This may appear especially baffling given what Jesus has already said in Matthew’s Gospel regarding peace: in the Beatitudes, in Matthew chapter 5, he says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God” and later in that same chapter he tells us that we are to love our enemies. In the other Gospels, Jesus speaks of peace often and he does seem to preach peace and wish to spread it around. In John’s Gospel especially, Jesus is always saying “peace be with you”. He also says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you”; And He says this, “ I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

In his letter to the Philippians Paul says “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”. But in Matthew’s Gospel Jesus clearly states that he has not come to bring peace to the earth. Why would Jesus say such a thing? Why would he not seek peace at all costs?

It’s because of what’s at stake. The eternal destiny of the soul of each and every individual is at stake. And Jesus will not compromise on that. Loving Him, loving God must hold the primary place in our hearts. Our love for God must come first before everything else, even our parents, brothers, sisters, wives, husbands, children, and friends. To be continued . . .

No parece haber sucedido. No he venido a traer paz... sino espada. He vencido al mundo." The Prayer List

Prayer is a gift from God. It is a wonderful way to lift someone in prayer who is sick, someone in need or for anyone with special intentions. The Parish prayer list is for such purposes, however, it can become quite big and the print becomes smaller. So that all may be included and properly fit within page boundaries, the prayer list will be renewed once it becomes full. The list will include parish members only. Please call the parish office if you wish to place your name on the list. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
