The Christian Virtue of Hope – Part 1 I was a philosophy major in college. Philosophers divide the history of human ideas or human thought into several distinct ages. They describe ancient times as the ‘Age of Awe and Wonder’. Thinkers and seekers of knowledge in ancient times were struck by the great beauty of the world and the amazing intricacies of the natural order. This period lasted until the Middle Ages which then gave way to the Enlightenment, a period of human history in Western civilization that saw a widening of the gap between the secular world and the Church. Secular thinkers came to distrust the Church. Philosophers regard this period as the ‘Age of Doubt’. After the Industrial Revolution of the nineteenth century, when technological advances emerged and brought startling and radical change to everyday life, when unprecedented achievements were taking place, the Age of Doubt gave way to the Age of Anxiety in the 20th century. We were now in the age of world wars, and weapons of mass destruction. While we enjoyed great benefits that technological advances gave us, such as medicine, education, travel and entertainment, we also faced greater threats from nuclear annihilation, disease, pollution, rising crime rates, and terrorism. The character of each of these ages is reflected in its cultural artifacts. The art, literature and scholarship of each these ages reflect the dominant feeling or perspective that characterizes it and gives it its name. Plato wrote The Republic out of a sense of awe and wonder at the nature of human relations at the national level and what would constitute the ideal State. In the seventeenth century the French philosopher Rene Descartes tried to find certainty by doubting everything he possibly could. He discovered that he could doubt everything except the fact that he was the one doing the doubting – and so he came up with his famous ‘cogito ergo sum’ formula, which means, “I think, therefore I am.” Early twentieth century existentialists wrote about how humanity was “condemned” to be free in a world with no values or meaning, that we were thrown into the world without our consent, “sentenced” as it were, to find our way through life with nothing to guide us other than our own fears and anxieties. And now, we might well be facing yet another age, an age characterized by even greater fear and confusion, what philosophers might call the “Age of Despair”. Many people today have given up on God, they don’t trust the civil authorities, they can’t let their children out of their sight for fear of predators. When might another September 11th happen? When will the bird flu hit? What’s going to happen to our church? It sure looks like a downward slope: we went from awe and wonder, to doubt, to anxiety and finally to despair. To be continued . . .

Prayer is a gift from God. It is a wonderful way to lift someone in prayer who is sick, someone in need or for anyone with special intentions. The Parish prayer list is for such purposes, however, it can become quite big and the print becomes smaller. So that all may be included and properly fit within page boundaries, the prayer list will be renewed with a fresh start every first of the month. If you wish to place your name on the list once it is renewed, please call the parish office. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

ADULT RCIA RITE OF ACCEPTANCE
The Adults in RCIA have been meeting since August. Now the participants are ready for the Rite of Acceptance and Welcoming. On Sunday, October 22nd at the 11:00 Mass, you will see a large group of adults asking to be accepted into our community. They are making their first public commitment to the Catholic faith as they continue their journey of learning, prayer and works of charity. Please be the welcoming parish that we are known for and support these who come to join us in faith. Please also keep them in your prayers as they journey to Easter and beyond. There will be a welcome reception in the Social Center after the Mass for everyone to meet and congratulate these who join us.
BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the
narthex of the church, near the bell tower door. There has
been much excitement and news reports regarding the
recent beatification of Fr. Stanley Rother in Oklahoma
City, so we are reprinting last year’s review of a book
about him. If you have been reading about him in the
newspapers and would like to learn more about this kind,
gentle and heroic man, this is the book for you.
Many thanks to the person who wrote this review!
The Shepherd Who Didn’t Run: Fr. Stanley Rother,
Martyr from Oklahoma, by María Ruiz Scaperlanda Archbishop Jose H. Gomez (currently of Los
Angeles, but remembered by many as Archbishop of San
Antonio) says Ms. Scaperlanda “is a good storyteller, and
she tells the story of Father Stanley Rother with
sensitivity and intelligence, introducing us to a holy
priest, a defender of the poor, and a missionary martyr of
our times – one more shining light in the long history of
holiness and heroism in the Americas.”
Born in Oklahoma in 1935, Fr. Rother grew up on
the family farm, and entered Assumption Seminary in San
Antonio in 1953. According to one of his Assumption
professors, “Stanley was probably one of the finest
students we ever had, but he had a devil of a time with the
books.” In the years preceding Vatican II, Assumption
held to high standards of scholarship, and the philosophy
and theology classes used only Latin textbooks. After
squeaking through the two years of philosophy, Stanley
suffered through the first semester of the four years of
theology, and, five days into the second semester, was
told he had failed the fall semester and could no longer
continue. Returning to Oklahoma, after a month at home,
he went to work preparing a building for the new
diocesan minor seminary, and then was sent to Mount St.
Mary’s Seminary in Maryland, where he finished his
preparation on May 21, 1963, and was ordained in
Oklahoma four days later.
Six pages of rave reviews in the front of this
volume include these phrases: “a humble, holy,
courageous priest who is a true St. John Vianney for our
times,” “an extraordinary example of faith and trust and
love,” “an amazing spiritual shepherd”, “a beacon
pointing to the power of Holy Orders to refine ordinary
men into instruments of grace.”
The Daughters of Notre Dame are currently accepting All Soul’s Memorials. A special Memorial Mass will be said on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at the 11:00 a.m. Mass; names will be published in the weekly bulletin. Envelopes for donations are located in the back of the church in the narthex. Donations may be placed in the collection basket or dropped off at the Pastoral Center. Deadline for intentions is Sunday, November 5, 2017.
Please join the Knights of Columbus on October 21st for the annual Pro-Life Chicken Dinner. This fundraiser benefits First Choice Reproductive Health and THE Parenting Resource Center (formerly THE Pregnancy Resource Center), an organization dedicated to saving babies and building strong families. We’ll be serving smoked chicken, sausage, beans, and all the fixings in the Social Center following the 5:00 pm Mass.
Please pray for those who have died, and have gone to their eternal rest with the Lord, especially for Ofelia Garcia.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
