The Alpha and the Omega – Part 12: The Ascension The Risen Christ visited many people in various situations after He was resurrected. The very first instance was on Easter morning when He appeared to Mary of Magdala. I find this to be a very interesting meeting and exchange of dialog.

Mary remained at the tomb after the others had gone back. She sat there weeping. And Jesus appeared to her, but at first she didn’t recognize Him. But then He called her by name, and at that moment she recognized Him and called Him “Teacher” (in the Hebrew, “Rabouni”).

But then Jesus said the following remark to her, which I find puzzling:

“Jesus said to her, “Stop holding on to me,* for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Nowhere in the text are we told that Mary was holding on to Him. It doesn’t say that she grabbed Him by the arm and wouldn’t let go. It doesn’t say anything even close to that. I imagine Mary thinking to herself, “Stop holding on to you? How am I holding on to You?”

I believe it must be in the name by which she addressed Him: Teacher. It’s not wrong, as such, to say that Jesus is a Teacher. He is. He taught people of His time, and through Holy Scripture and Sacred Tradition, He teaches us and all who follow Him.

What might be happening is that Jesus does not want Mary of Magdala, nor anyone else, to think of Him as a teacher only, because that is an incomplete knowledge of Him. It is good to know that Jesus is our Teacher, but He is so much more than that.

“ . . . for I have not yet ascended to the Father” Jesus goes on to say. Not only did Jesus sacrifice Himself to atone for the sins of humanity, not only did He rise from the dead so that we may also rise, He ascended to the Father. The Ascension is just as integral and necessary to who Jesus is as all the rest.

It was important for Jesus to remain on Earth for a short time after His resurrection, but it was just as important and necessary that He ascend to the Father.

For one thing, Jesus has achieved the reconciliation of God and Humanity. He suffered to achieve it, in ways and to such a degree that we cannot possibly fathom. The act of love and self-sacrifice Jesus did for us is unique in all of human history, and is of such greatness that the greatest possible reward is due Jesus for what He has done. He deserves to ascend to His Father in Heaven.

The Ascension is not to be understood in physical terms only. Chapter 1 of The Acts of the Apostles does at least appear to describe Jesus’ Ascension in physical terms: “When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight: (Acts 1:9) The key to this verse is the part about the cloud taking Him out of their sight. In Holy Scripture, the word “cloud” is not always used in the sense of a cloud up in the sky. In the Old Testament, the Israelites followed the pillar of cloud through the desert. The cloud came down and was present in the Tabernacle. When Solomon’s Temple was dedicated, a cloud came and filled the Temple. The cloud represents the presence of God.

When Jesus was “lifted up” and the cloud took Him out of their sight in the first chapter of Acts, we can rightly interpret it to mean that Jesus ascended to His Father, as a King ascends to his throne. Jesus’ Ascension rightly belongs to Him as His reward for His sacrificial death for us. All praise, honor and glory to Jesus Christ, Our Risen and Ascended Lord! To be continued . . .

¿Cómo me aferro a Ti?

¡Toda alabanza, honor y gloria a Jesucristo, nuestro Señor Resucitado y Ascendido! Continuará . . .
