There is an ever growing opportunity to work from home in a customer service position. Major
corporations like American Express, Walgreens, Home Depot, Carnival Cruise Lines, and many,
many others are outsourcing their customer service calls to companies that hire U.S and Canada
based online agents.
Many of these opportunities permit you to set your own hours and choose a client suited to your
interests. There is a really wide range to choose from. Some companies are looking for contracted
individual and others are interested in employees.
You can be up and running in no time. All that is required is a computer with high speed internet
access, a landline telephone, a headset and a designated quiet work place. Most work-at-home
customer service companies will also train you to get you up to speed.
Customer service representatives earn between $8.00 and $18.00 per hour on average. You should
be prepared to work a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per week, although some agents work 40 hours
or even more when their schedule permits.
I have done all the research for you and provided an expansive list of these companies who are
looking for individuals to work from their homes and provide superb customer service to their
clients.
Always use caution when visiting these sites, because although they do contain legitimate
information, there are also links and ads on the sites that can lead to information that is
not legitimate.
NEVER respond to Check-cashing, wire transfer or Western Union related offers.
Keep in mind, these are legitimate companies looking to interview serious applicants for
the positions they have available. So be professional and treat the virtual (which simply
means online) interview just like an in-person interview.
Check out a few of the companies in this industry to see which might offer the best fit for
you.
If you will need to get a computer, you can find a used or donated computer. There are
many non profit organizations that donate or sell computers at a reduced rate to those in
need. A good place to start your search is www.techsoup.org and check out the “Get
Products and Services” drop down menu.
Also, for other resources, you can also go to www.google.com and type “Computer
Recycling and Reuse” in the search bar. Be sure to include your state or zip code so you can
locate the suitable organizations near you.
Buy a noise-cancelling headset with a mute button. The last thing you want is to be on the
phone and have the doorbell ring or police sirens blaring in the back-ground. The people
you will be speaking with don’t know you’re at home and they shouldn’t.
Set Boundaries with Your Family and Friends. This is very important to your personal
relationships and to your success at working from home. Put up a sign on your door when
you are working so others will not disturb you. When you first begin telecommuting,
friends and family may not understand this is still a real job. A friend may call you for a
favor, “Can you watch the kids, since you are working at home?” You may get invitations to
lunch; which down the road you may evaluate you can work into your schedule
periodically.
Not ALL companies offer work at all times and to everyone. For instance, a few companies
offer seasonal positions and will contact you when they have something available, some
companies have positions available to disable individuals only and some companies only
have positions available in certain states, etc. But there are plenty of good positions
available to those who meet the qualifications.
