Dear Mrs. Davis:

Thank you for your interest in being a volunteer trainer for the Shelby County Entrepreneur Project. I am delighted in having you on our entrepreneur training team.

Enclosed is an agenda for the March 5-6 training that is being held in Lufkin at the Days Inn. Let me know about your reservation needs. I must let A&M and the motel know who is coming on March 1. Rooms will be master billed to Texas Agricultural Extension Service except for phone calls and other miscellaneous expenses. All meals are part of the package deal with the motel. Let me know if you have any special dietary needs.

The entrepreneurship program is designed to assist Texans in the start up and management of successful home based and micro businesses in an effort to strengthen communities and families in Texas. Entrepreneurship is interdisciplinary involving efforts to encourage sound business decision making resulting in benefits that affect the economic and social well being of Texas families.

Entrepreneurial programs can assist individuals in developing skills that can develop into valuable commodities with cash‑earning potential. This directly benefits the family with added income, the business with growth, and the community with an economically and socially valuable contribution.

• CHARACTERISTICS OF TANF CLIENTS • is a Black or Hispanic female,

• is approximately 30 years old,

• has 1 or 2 children under age 11,

• is unemployed and has no other income,

• receives a TANF grant of $201or less, and

• receives TANF for less than 12 continuous months.

• She dropped out of school between the 8th and 11th grades and has no job training.

• When she enters the labor market, she will have these handicaps:

• she is a minority female without a high school education and without job training,

• she has young children who must have affordable, competent day care, and

• she does not have reliable transportation.


• Assessing self-employment skills

• Spotting opportunities among scams

• Balancing work and family

• Developing time - management skills

• Gathering facts about your business plan & writing a business plan

• Accessing e-commerce information

• Setting the right price and targeting new markets

• Deciding on a distribution channel

• Purchasing inventory

• Business manners, selling secrets, gaining customer satisfaction edge

• Basic financial management and record keeping and cash flow

• Getting your just deductions

• Searching for capital

• Debt management

"It's helped me understand about how to advertise, how to attract more clients, and how to keep them," Johnson said. The program also saved her money. She knew she needed to register her business with the local county clerk, but she was told initially that it would cost her $300. "But in class I learned all I needed was a 'doing business as’, DBA, form, and the charge was only $15," she said. "It was a big relief.
