"My View"

Pomona Railway Station Gallery is proud to hold a solo exhibition by local artist Peter Teakle. His exhibition, "My View" will open on 13 October and run to 8 November. Peter is a self taught artist who realized in his early twenties he wanted to make a career of

his art. Working by day as a boiler maker, he set up a studio in his garage and began what was to be many years of studying art and artists and developing his talent “I paint what I see-what I feel when I look at a scene and try to portray it in an honest and uncomplicated way. I love light- it is the essence of a painting, highlighting colour, depth, reflection and mood.” Peter's work reflect the moods of nature, isolation and solitude.

Peter is well known in the community for his murals, artwork with children at the school and backdrops for local theatre groups and has won several regional awards for his work.

Heating For Pomona Community Pool The Pomona Primary School has formed a Grant Proposal Committee, which has been working hard to secure funding to obtain heating for the Pomona

Community Swimming pool. The Committee also has a further aim to improve the pool facilities, by renovating the change rooms, heating the showers, erecting a shade sail, and repairing the pool cover. Pomona State School houses the only public pool for a community of 2000+ residents, and further populations in surrounding townships. Pomona is the hub for many of these surrounding hinterland communities including Booreen Point, Cootharaba, Cooran, Federal, Kin Kin and Traveston. The community pool is utilised by these residents for leisure, social interaction, fitness and

community involvement. The facility offers a 6 lane, 25 metre pool, which provides lap/recreational swimming, squad coaching, water aerobics, and learn-to-swim classes. The pool provides curriculum based swimming lessons, and swimming carnivals to 5 schools including Pomona, Federal, Cooran and Kin Kin primary schools, as well as Noosa District State High School – Pomona Campus. This fine asset has the potential to offer local families all levels of learning and recreation, due to its central location in the hinterland. As local health practitioners advise, and we all know, increased physical activity is a plus for both mental and physical health of us, as individuals, our families and the wider community. Heating Pomona Community Pool is the gateway to increase healthy outcomes for our hinterland community. The official opening of the pool was in November 1984, and with the 30 year anniversary looming, there is no time like the present, to upgrade and improve this wonderful asset, to better cater for the wider community. The committee has recently submitted 4 grants for the funding required to install a 60kw Heat Pump which will allow for 9 months of swimming year round at a constant temperature of minimum 26 degrees Celsius. We are awaiting the results of the funding applications which should be received in November, so fingers crossed that in 2013, the pool will be warmer! For further information, please contact the Pomona P&C Committee @ [email protected]. A facebook page has been created, ‘Heat the Noosa Hinterland – Heat the Pomona Community Pool’, If you are a Facebook fan, please like this page, and this will allow you to stay up to date with the progress.

Pomona Pacers With the heat soon to be upon us, we have commenced our 6.30 am starts on weekdays in front of the Pomona Community House. We will soon appreciate waking up that little bit earlier to avoid the heat. A couple of weeks ago we enjoyed the hospitality of one of our country Pacers after walking one of the country roads. Even though Pomona cannot be considered a large town it was still lovely tasting the rural environment. The Moon Walk on 2 October was most enjoyable. It started with a delicious meal shared with friends in a relaxed atmosphere. This was followed by a walk along Gympie Terrace under a clear, star-filled sky. It was a pleasure to see so many people dining in the restaurants, and walking beside the river because of the school holidays. The only thing that was missing was the full moon but we did see it as we drove home. Our next Moon Walk is on 30 October, followed by one on 27 November. Our final Moon Walk for 2012 will be held on 18 December, a week earlier than it should be because of Christmas. How time does fly! It is almost time to start organizing next year’s schedule. It was interesting to attend the Pomona Community House AGM and see how much varied activity goes on around our little town. Congratulations to all the volunteers concerned. And congratulations to the volunteer who provided us with some delicious pizzas. It was worth going to the meeting just for the refreshments. “You done good!” For more information on our daily walks or the Moon Walks phone Assunta on 5485 2935.

In response…

Recently, at Pomona Community House, we have been hearing of some fairly sad and tragic events in our community and we have been touched by the generosity and kindness locals have shown in response to these events.

Here at the Community House we have been led to ponder on grief and loss whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a friend or colleague; losing a job; the loss of a pet or even moving house or family breakdown. We shared our own stories and we realised that there is no right or wrong way to deal with the often difficult process of grief and loss. Grief is normal. It’s not an illness or a weakness or something that has to be hidden. It comes in many guises –sadness, anger, disbelief and confusion. It can come out in panic or shock or even numbness. Sometimes it feels like a rough roller coaster ride. There may be times when you feel you want someone with you to help you with the ups and downs. Remember it’s OKAY to ask for help and it is OKAY to say, “I’m not going well…can you help me?” There are many people in our community to turn to. You might need a hug and someone to hand you a few tissues. Maybe this is an opportunity to reach out to friends, your neighbours or your church. Sometimes all you need is a friendly face and a cup of tea – come and see us at the Community House. But if issues are getting on top of you and the roller coaster ride is overwhelming and scary – please do reach out to your GP or a helping professional. There are several wonderful professional counsellors in the Pomona area who can assist you. And if you know someone who might be hurting simply ask them, “Are you okay?” and listen.

Customer Contact Centre sets to open its

doors in Pomona

In recent years, many locals have come to know Fiona Hutchings and Hayley Saunders and the team at the Cooroy Community Bank® Branch.

Whether it’s through the $400,000 the branch has given back to the Cooroy and Pomona communities since 2008 or just being involved in sponsoring the many community events, schools and clubs in the area, the Community Bank® branch has made a difference and changed the banking landscape forever. Now, Bendigo Bank has decided to branch out - literally!

From October 16, Hayley Saunders will be based at the new Pomona Customer Contact Centre at: 2 Station Street, Pomona on Tuesdays and Thursdays (opposite Pomona Hotel). Hayley says she’s excited about offering Pomona locals a choice when it comes to their banking.

“I can’t wait to get started,” Hayley said. “Bendigo Bank has a great track record of improving the banking experience because we focus on people and our communities. Many Pomona locals already bank with us in Cooroy, so now I hope to assist them with their banking needs in right here Pomona in the form of our Customer Contact Centre. I’ll start opening two days a week and see how we go. We won’t be able to complete any cash transactions, but I can open new accounts, help arrange any lending including home loans, personal loans, business lending and credit cards. I can also set up financial planning and business banking appointments,” she added.

Hayley went on to say there had been numerous requests to set up a facility in town for some time.

“Our message to everyone is simple - the more support we get, the more support we can give back to the community, just as we have done as major sponsor of the Pomona King of the Mountain Festival for the past three years. Every savings or investment account, every home or personal loan, every insurance policy, and every product or service we offer, money goes back into our community. As one of our customers, you not only make a decision that benefits you, you make one that benefits the whole community,” Hayley concluded.

Hayley will be based at the Pomona Customer Contact Centre at 2 Station Street, Pomona every Tuesday from 9.00am - 2.00pm and every Thursday from 11.00am - 5.00pm and other times by appointment. Other days, she will remain based at the Cooroy Community Bank® branch. If you would like to talk with Hayley about the new Pomona Customer Contact Centre or make an appointment to discuss your banking needs, please call 0402 131 252.

Pomona & District Kindergarten has used the recent school holidays to make some changes to the playground for the children to enjoy as the weather warms up. The lovely natural setting of the large outdoor play area has been enhanced by the addition of a meandering dry creek bed and timber bridges to access the gazebo and ever-popular sandpit. "The playground is now better than ever," says Lyndal Fletcher, co-Director of the Kindy, "and the children will make wonderful use of the hard work put in by their parents and the local community." Well shaded by trees the playground provides plenty of opportunities for the children to explore, discover and

learn about the natural environment.

With enrolments now open for 2013 and places still available, these new additions to the Kindy will be ready for exploring by a new group of children in 2013. The Kindy is located in a heritage-listed building in the heart of Pomona, in Stan Topper Park. As a community kindergarten, affiliated with C&K, the elected Management Committee each year has the role of focussing their efforts on areas of importance. The emphasis is on children and resources, not profits. Running a pre-prep program which has a play based curriculum, the experienced teaching staff encourage children to make choices and decisions, explore, problem solve and develop their own independence and self-confidence. Throughout the year the children grow socially and emotionally and extend their thinking and physical skills. Free play in the playground is a large part of that learning journey. Pomona Kindy strives to be an inclusive and sustainable living and learning community. It's philosophy includes an acknowledgement of the uniqueness and potential of all children, their families and the wider community, who are valued and share a sense of belonging within the community kindergarten. Fees are less than $24 per day and healthcare card holders may be eligible for $0 out-of-pocket. Currently taking enrolments for the 5 day fortnight pre-prep program in 2013, the Kindy can be contacted on 5485 1381 for more information.
