In further acknowledgement of the community determination that practically willed the new shed place into existence, Mayor Abbot officially opened the „Lawson Shed‟ named in honour of Brian Lawson, Honorary Office & Project Manager of the Pomona & District Community House. Brian battled for 7 years to get the project going, with knock back after knock back by funding bodies. Brian supervised construction and inspired local businesses and tradespeople to donate goods and services that doubled the value of the shed beyond the original grant money of $129,000 from former Noosa Shire Council and $20,000 from QLD Department of Communities. Mayor Abbot said one definition for success of any district was the drive of business and community organisations to leverage projects off the back of government programs. “What you have ended up with is something that you truly own,” Mr Abbot told about 50 people attending the shed opening. “This shows what the community can do for itself and it demonstrates what a group such as Pomona Community House can achieve when it inspires a community.” The Mayor‟s congratulations were supported by Sunshine Coast Council division 12 representative, Cr Lew Brennan. “Today is not only about building a new facility, it is about the bonding of a town and bringing people together. There contin- ues to be a group of towns here in the northern hinterland of the Sunshine Coast that is teaching lessons to other communities across the coast,” he said. Cr Brennan joked that the building was less a shed, more a house. Indeed, the shell is a barn style kit home painted in heritage colours. It now houses a brand new kitchen facility, counselling room, meeting space and a large activities room. Plaques thanking each of the more than 15 tradespeople and businesses that offered their skills, paint, plumbing fittings and other goods were handed out on the day. Pomona Community House coordinator, Heather Manders, said the new shed was a multi-functional space that would give her organisation scope to cater to the needs of community organi- sations, and for meetings and other activities that could not be accommodated in the former station master‟s residence – the home of Community House for the past 15 years. ‘people’s shed’ at Pomona

A generous group of volunteer tradies (see back page for de-tails) who brought to reality a seven-year dream for the people of Pomona was the toast of the town last month, Friday, 13 May 2011 when Mayor Bob Abbot, officially opened a new „community shed‟.

“What you have

ended up with is something that you truly own,” Mr Abbot told about 50 people attending the shed opening. There contin-ues to be a group of towns here in the northern hinterland of the Sunshine Coast that is teaching lessons to other communities across the coast,” he said.

Pomona Community House coordinator, Heather Manders, said the new shed was a multi-functional space that would give her organisation scope to cater to the needs of community organi-sations, and for meetings and other activities that could not be accommodated in the former station master‟s residence – the home of Community House for the past 15 years. Sunshine Coast Vets News

What’s wrong with Willow?

Hi everyone! In this month’s Sunshine Coast Vets news we follow the progress of a very special patient “Willow “Gillman a beautiful domestic Shorthair Cat owned by Rod and Tina Gillman. Willow initially visited our practice for a general check up back in February. Over the following months Rod and Tina noticed that she was steadily losing weight despite having a robust appe-tite. We re-examined her. Everything seemed to check out fine except for a mild build up of scale on her teeth. We decided to perform a full blood test and to clean her teeth under anaesthetic (Many animals have a new lease on life when the bacteria are removed from their teeth after a general scale and polish). The blood test returned perfectly normal results…..mmm. We quizzed Rod and Tina at length regarding possible things that could be causing stress to Willow e.g. a new cat in the neighbourhood, tradesmen working next door etc. but neither Rod nor Tina could think of anything that had changed in Willow’s normal routine. Soon after this visit Willow suddenly began to vomit and lost her appetite. Rod and Tina rushed her in the next morning. It was decided to do an exploratory surgery to “unzip” her and have a look. When Willow was opened up what we found surprised us all. Willow’s abdomen seemed to have remarkably little in the way of intestines in it...so where were they? On further searching we found a small hole in her diaphragm (the sheath of muscle separating the chest from the abdomen) through which her intes-tines had herniated. In other words her intestines had moved up and into her chest cavity not leaving much space for her lungs and effectively blocking her intestine hence causing her to vomit. Then began the arduous task of replacing them back in the abdomen where they belonged and removing adhesions that had formed over time. Selina, one of our veterinary nurses, performed the very important task of “breathing for her” by way of rhythmi-cally squeezing the ventilator bag. Willow recovered well from the operation and quickly put on weight. She has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of months and is now back to her happy mischievous self. Rod and Tina were ecstatic at having her back home healthy and happy. Reflecting back Rod remembered a day where their dog and Willow had had a brief altercation as dogs and cats tend to do. This injury is more commonly seen when cats and dogs are hit by cars and in wildlife than when attacked by the family pet. Rod and Tina visited the surgery recently and kindly donated equipment to treat injured wildlife and some spare towels to be used as blankets for any other dogs or cats recovering from surgery like Willow. Dear Premier Anna Bligh and Hon Craig Wallace, I am writing to you in confusion as to why and how the Sunshine Coast Council can approve a MEGA quarry in the Noosa Hinterland when they are fully aware that the roads are totally inadequate (Kin Kin Pomona Range and Dr Pages Roads). As per RACQ survey for 2011 the Kin Kin Pomona Range Road was voted the 10th worst in the state. http://www.racq.com.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/66895/RACQ-Unroadworthy-Roads-Survey-2011.pdf follow this link for the survey report. The Sunshine Coast Council has passed the buck to Main Roads because main roads are responsible for the road. Now when we talk to our Councillor Lew Brennan and Mayor Bob Abbot they say it‟s Main Roads problem even though they were directly responsible for the ex-pansion of the MEGA quarry and knew that main roads had no intention of upgrading the approved haulage route. The communities of the Noosa Hinterland are fighting this MEGA quarry and we feel that the quarry should never have been approved. Now Main Roads have to upgrade the road just so Neilsen‟s can put their 40 plus 40 tonne quarry trucks with dog trailers on these roads. Surely the tax payer doesn‟t need to pay for this, that it should be The Neilsen‟s Group, they should outlay the expense or it would be cheaper for all involved to stop the MEGA quarry in Kin Kin, The Noosa Hinterland. We would appreciate your help in stopping this MEGA quarry that should never have been approved.
