Cooperative Education Program 2011-2012 Annual Report

Page 2: Cooperative Education Program Annual Report 2011-12

Cooperative Education and internships (terms synonymous with experiential learning) continue to be valuable real-world work experiences for students and an important recruiting strategy for employers. This report is a compilation of complete data from Summer 2011 through Spring 2012 pertaining to students who enrolled in Michigan Tech’s Cooperative Education Program, as well as incomplete data regarding students who chose not to enroll as co-op students but rather engaged in professional work experiences as interns. Information regarding salary and employers that hire our students is presented. Data is stated to reflect majors and class standing, such as sophomore, junior, senior, or grad student. Specific data related to the participation of international students is also contained in this report. Our students worked in 26 different states and one foreign country (China) this past year, attesting to the fact that Michigan Tech students have a willingness to go to where the jobs exist. Last year, 32% of the co-op students worked in Michigan, while 40% worked in Wisconsin. This year, more students worked in Michigan (38%) than in Wisconsin (36%). Overall enrollment in the co-op program for the Fall and Spring semesters was up 17% when compared to last year. On another note, students from 29 different academic disciplines (majors) enrolled in the co-op program, a 38% increase over the previous year. From our perspective, this is an indication that the economy is improving and students from a greater variety of academic disciplines at Michigan Tech are in demand. Increases in recruiting activity give rise to hope that co-op and internship opportunities will continue to increase in the coming year. There were 173 companies recruiting students for co-ops and internships at the Fall 2011 Career Fair; a 27% increase over the Fall 2010 Career Fair. Also, there were 128 companies recruiting students for co-ops and internships at the Spring 2012 Career Fair; an increase of 19% over the Spring 2011 Career Fair. For a complete listing of all the companies that attend the career fairs, go to www.career.mtu.edu.

Average hourly salary for all majors showed an improved increase (2.9%) over the previous year (1%). Of the four engineering disciplines that had the highest number of students participating, civil engineering has finally reversed a three year decreasing trend ($13.58/hour in 2008-09 to $13.40 in 2009-10, to $13.27 in 2010-11) and showed an increase to $13.79 for 2011-12. However, chemical engineers experienced a decrease this year, going from $19.57 in 2010-11 to $19.16. Mechanical engineers went from $18.23 in 2010-11 to $18.71, a 2.6% increase. And, electrical engineers went from $19.66 in 2010-11 to $20.12 this past year, an increase of 2.3%. As stated earlier, this report includes “incomplete” data pertaining to students who worked on internship status this past year. This data is incomplete due to the fact that students do not have to register their internships with the University. A survey within NACElink was helpful in obtaining more information from students. This year, students from 37 different majors reported internships with 171 companies located in sixteen different states. This data helps to support the assumption that many of our students are obtaining valuable real world work experience in their majors before they graduate, in the form of internships as opposed to co-op. This past Spring, prompted by the College of Engineering, discussion took place regarding the following topics pertaining to Cooperative Education at Michigan Tech: 1) Credits and full-time student status, 2) Fee-based vs. tuition based cost to students enrolled as co-op students, and 3) Changes to the technical report requirement for co-op students. These topics will need to be addressed in further detail across the University in the coming year before changes can be adopted and implemented. Many individuals and organizations are to be congratulated and thanked for the success of experiential learning at Michigan Technological University. Employers, faculty, volunteers, and Career Services staff members have provided outstanding support; allowing students to engage with terrific opportunities. Thank you to all!
