MODULE 1Introduction to Accounting/Financial Statements – LIVE OnlineThe first set of ten 3-hour sessions look at the theory and the steps involved in preparing books for a business or organization in Alberta or the NWT. Using an accounting simulation consisting of actual source documents from a fictitious business, students will enter one month of financial transactions for a small company using the manual five-journal system. This course will show students who use a computerized software program what is actually happening behind the entry screens on their computer and will give them a better overall understanding of the accounting process. In the latter part of this course, students learn how to read, understand, and analyze basic financial statements for a variety of organizations, both for-profit and non-profit.

MODULE 2Computerized Bookkeeping – NEW! to LIVE OnlineThe second set of ten 3-hour sessions are spent teaching you how to enter financial transactions (using the same accounting simulation as in Module 1) into a computerized accounting software program, Sage 50 (formerly known as Simply Accounting). Time is also spent on looking at more detailed information on topics including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll, GST/HST, Bank and Cash Accounts. Building on the understanding of the accounting cycle learned in Module 1, students are taught how to enter the data and manage the paperwork for all aspects of the finances of a small business or organization.

What is it?

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is an employer-driven training program. This means that employers decide on who gets training and what type of training may be needed for new and existing employees. Employers must use a third-party training provider to deliver the formal training either onsite, online or in a classroom setting.

Northern Lakes College develops and maintains partnerships with regional businesses, industry and agencies in order to ensure program offerings reflect the training needs of northern Alberta.

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant, along with Northern Lakes College, will assist Alberta businesses fulfill their skilled labour needs by providing subsidies and training for employees to better meet the requirements of their organization.

How does it benefit employers?

This funding will provide employers with the opportunity to invest in the skill development of their current and future workforce, leading to increases in organizational productivity and retention.

What costs does it cover?

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant program provides significant savings to employers looking to pursue training for their employees. Under the grant, employers will be required to cover a maximum of one third of the costs associated with direct training. Government contributions can cover a maximum of $10,000 per employee.

REGISTRATIONFEE PAYMENT: You may pay your course fees by cash, personal cheque or money order (payable to Northern Lakes College), VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Interac or company purchase order/authorization. You are considered registered for a course when your fees are fully paid. All course fees listed are per person, per course.

Note: for LIVE Online classes: Fees are per person and where applicable a group price (for as many as you want at 1 computer connection) is listed.

PRIVATE OFFERINGS: We can set up customized offerings for your organization. Contact us for more details.

COURSE ATTENDANCE: Verification or course certification is only granted for those who participate as individuals LIVE online. If you take with a group OR you miss the class and view the recording, attendance verification and/or certification will not be granted (MMP modules are an exception for recordings, contact Continuing Education & Corporate Training for more information).

WITHDRAWALS & REFUNDS: Your registration will be fully refunded when notice of withdrawal is given two (2) working days before the course start date for regular courses OR five (5) working days for Certificate Program courses (excluding MMP – see note below). When notification is received less than two (2) full working days before the course start date for regular courses OR five (5) full working days for Certificate Program courses (excluding MMP), an invoice will be issued for full payment of the course. When you are unable to attend your course, you may arrange for someone to take your place.

Note: For MMP Courses, Partial refunds for tuition fees are granted if the withdrawal is prior to 20% of the course length. The refund is 75% of the tuition fee. There are no refunds for textbooks/shipping costs. In this event your registration fee will be refunded in full or applied to the re-scheduled course.

LIVE ONLINE: You will need access to high speed internet, microphone / speakers (preferably a head-set). All times are on Mountain Time Zone.
